Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for landscaping contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Modern Paving, Inc. – Peninsula, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take an honest, straightforward approach to every job. “For us, honesty means providing high-quality work, sticking to budgets and consulting with our clients about the details of their projects,” explains Vice President David Tetrault. “They really appreciate this type of approach because they know we’re fully invested in helping them achieve their goals.”

Modern Paving, Inc. – Peninsula has been providing landscaping and hardscaping services for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties since 1991. The company primarily focuses on designing and building outdoor living spaces (with an emphasis on interlocking paving stones and landscaping), but its in-house capabilities also extend to irrigation and drainage, low-voltage outdoor lighting and synthetic turf installations, and more.

Unlike less experienced landscape contractors that emphasize the bottom line over the needs of their clients, Modern Paving, Inc. – Peninsula’s primary concern is ensuring the value and beauty of its customers’ properties. “Everyone who works here has a passion for quality work that starts with our management and trickles down to our field employees,” says Mr. Tetrault. “That means using higher quality materials, better installation techniques, and hands-on construction methods that meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.”

Rather than simply holding one license and using subcontractors to handle other phases of its clients’ projects, Modern Paving, Inc. – Peninsula holds several licenses that allow it to perform a multitude of work under one roof. “We’re licensed landscape contractors, concrete contractors, paving stone installers and pool refinishers,” explains Mr. Tetrault. “That’s a rare thing in this industry. It’s hard to find a contractor that doesn’t subcontract most of its work, but we have licensed employees who can address any needs or requests our clients have.”

Industry Info

If you’re taking on a driveway or walkway project, consider the benefits of concrete pavers.

Concrete has long been the go-to for driveways, sidewalks, patios, walkways and pool decks. But concrete paving stones, also known as interlocking pavers, have been gaining popularity in recent years. According to David Tetrault, vice president of Modern Paving, Inc. – Peninsula in San Mateo, paving stones have many benefits that concrete can’t offer. “With paving stones, you get added flexibility and longevity,” he says. “For example, if your car drips oil on your driveway or you break or crack a paver, you can just replace one or two sections instead of the entire area.”

Having interlocking pavers installed instead of concrete is also beneficial if you need to access utilities underneath your driveway, such as plumbing, electrical, sewer or irrigation pipes. “You can easily lift and reset a few paving stones without damaging the driveway,” says Mr. Tetrault.

Paving stones can also allow homeowners to budget for extensive projects that they might not otherwise be able to afford. While concrete work must be done all at once in order to keep the color uniform, interlocking pavers are more flexible. “With pavers, you can complete jobs in phases,” confirms Mr. Tetrault. “You can do your patio, driveway and side yard sections at different times, and when the job is over, it will look exactly as if it was done as a single project because the paving stones and colors match.”

Curb appeal is important to most homeowners, especially those interested in upgrading the first impression of their home and improving its resale value. In fact, Mr. Tetrault says resale value is much higher for homes that feature pavers as opposed to concrete. “Pavers add a visual aesthetic that can’t be easily replicated with concrete, which makes them a smart choice for homeowners who want to get the most value for their dollar.”

Most pavers are nearly maintenance-free, and Mr. Tetrault says a simple sealing will make stains less likely to take hold. “After that, the best way to keep pavers clean is to simply hose them down once or twice a month. That will help keep dirt and grime from building up over time and prevent organic growth from taking root in the joints.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my project?
A: Completion times are different for every job, but in general, we can complete most projects in one or two weeks.

Q: Will you stop working on my project to start another job?
A: No. Our crews only get one project assignment at a time, and they work every day until it’s finished. This allows us to complete every project in the most appropriate manner without rushing. Our clients like that we start their projects and see them through to completion before starting another job. Once we start, we don’t stop until the homeowner is happy.

Q: Do you offer any warranties?
A: Yes, we offer a comprehensive 25-year warranty. It’s important to know that a warranty is only as good as the company that’s backing it. We’ve been doing this work for more than 20 years, so our customers can trust that we’ll be here if they ever need to make a warranty claim.

Q: Have you done any paving work in my neighborhood?
A: We’ve completed thousands of paving jobs over the years, and our work can be seen in just about every town and neighborhood in the Bay Area.

Q: How do pavers compare to concrete?
A: In general, paving stones have more flexibility and durability than concrete. If you break or crack a paver, you can just replace the affected area. If you need to access utilities under your driveway, you can easily lift and reset a few paving stones without damaging the whole area. Also, with paving stones, we can complete patio, driveway and connecting side yard projects in phases. When it’s finished, it’ll look like it was done in a single job because we can match the paving stones and colors. You can’t do that with concrete. Paving stones also have an aesthetic element that many people like, and they can add more curb appeal to your house because their resale value is much higher than concrete.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM David Tetrault

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

David Tetrault: A Northwest Progression

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN MATEO — For David Tetrault, a westward relocation precipitated a northward advancement in his professional career. “I’m originally from Massachusetts, where I got my start in the construction industry,” he says. “In the mid-2000s, I decided to pack up my tools and move to California. Initially, I got a job as a carpenter, but I soon realized that if I wanted to get ahead, I’d need to go into management. Someone suggested that I get into the hardscaping industry, so I took a job as a project manager for a local paving company. It was a pretty seamless transition, thanks to the knowledge I’d gained in construction up to that point. After a couple of years, I went to Modern Paving and opened a new branch in San Diego. Three years later, I migrated up to the San Francisco Bay Area and opened another branch, which is where I’ve been since 2011.”

Today, as vice president of Modern Paving, Inc. – Peninsula, David says his favorite part of his job is interacting with his team. “I love working with my guys and seeing them be successful in their careers and, by extension, their lives. That’s what’s most rewarding for me.”

A resident of San Mateo County (where he lives with his wife, Amy), David spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “Amy and I own a dog walking and boarding business, so I help with that,” he details. “We both like to stay fit by running and working out, and I also enjoy surfing. When we’re not working or exercising, we like to go to the movies, go out to dinner and just relax.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, David believes in treating others with respect—especially if they work for you. “I treat my guys as equals, no matter who they are or where they come from,” he explains. “Because of my professional background, I can really relate to what they go through as laborers. I’ve seen owners and managers who can’t relate and don’t treat their guys very well, and I think it’s because they’ve never walked in their shoes.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, David says he’d take a vacation. “It might sound cliché, but it would be nice to do a little traveling. I’d like to go back to Europe and spend some time in Italy, Greece, and other countries in the Mediterranean region.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first job?

A: When I was 14, I got a job as a dishwasher for a local Italian restaurant.

A: Tea.

Q: What’s your favorite kind of food?

A: Sushi.

Q: What was your first pet?

A: A black lab named Max.

  • Identifying Water-Related Issues Before You Build

SAN MATEO — If you’re planning to install a new driveway, patio or similar hardscape feature, take the time to look for potential water-related issues. Water can be very effective at breaking down what you’ve built, so it’s important to assess your property and deal with any problem areas before construction begins.

There are two aspects to consider when assessing your property for water-related issues. The first is groundwater, which is water beneath the surface. When a groundwater issue goes undetected, it can cause substantial damage to an installation’s foundation. In most cases, installing a French drain can prevent such issues from occurring, as they’re designed to corral ground water and divert it toward a predetermined point.

The second aspect to consider is surface water, or more specifically, what will happen when it rains on your new installation. It’s important for rainwater to be able to run off to an area where it won’t cause any surface or foundation damage. Typically, one or more well-placed surface drains will be sufficient to solve any surface water issues on your property.

  • Video: The Importance of Examining Water Flow

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN MATEO — Host, Sarah Rutan:Before taking on an outdoor hardscaping project, it’s important to identify any potential water flow issues. To learn more, we’re in San Mateo with Steven Molof, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor David Tetrault, vice president of Modern Paving.

Steve Molof: So, when you take on any outdoor project, whether that’s a driveway, a walkway, a pool deck, or some softscape elements like a brand new lawn or some trees, it’s important to take a look at what the water on your property is doing. There’s two things you look at, and it’s important for any contractor you choose to make sure they consider this before you start.

That’s ground water, what’s happening beneath the surface. It’s important that we address that so that way it doesn’t end up damaging the foundation of your home or damaging the foundation of whatever you’re building, whether that’s a patio, a driveway, a pool deck, we don’t want that to unravel down the road. And water can be very effective at unraveling what you’ve built.

The other thing is surface water. What happens when it rains, when the gutters, downspout down onto whatever you’ve built? How do we address that? So, you want to make sure that you send that to a place that’s not going to damage the surface of what you’ve built and compromise the foundation of your soil in any regard, whether that’s the driveway or if it’s a beautiful new planter. Make sure water is addressed so we don’t compromise any of the money you just spent on the beautiful new project.
