Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for paving stone companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Mr. Pavers Contractor Services, Inc., keeping clients happy comes down to one key factor: giving each job a personal touch. “The main thing that sets us apart is the direct interaction we have with our customers,” says owner Glayston Soares. “They aren’t just dealing with salespeople—they’re dealing with the leaders of the company. We really pride ourselves on offering that type of hands-on service.”

Mr. Pavers Contractor Services has been providing hardscaping services for residential clients throughout the Bay Area since 2006. The company has the training and equipment to install paving stones for projects that range from driveways and walkways to patios and pool areas, and it also has the in-house capabilities to design and build concrete retaining walls of any size and length.

Unlike less experienced paving stone companies that take an “assembly line” approach to each project, Mr. Pavers Contractor Services is happy to accommodate its clients’ changing needs to ensure the best possible results. “We give our customers a lot of flexibility to make changes during the process,” affirms Mr. Soares. “With some companies, making alterations to the original design can be a real hassle, but since we work so closely with our clients, we’re able to process changes quickly and easily.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Mr. Pavers Contractor Services is its company-wide dedication to quality control. “We keep all our work in-house, which goes a long way toward ensuring high levels of quality,” says Mr. Soares. “We also send a foreman to supervise each job, and I personally visit worksites every day to make sure the work is being completed to our standards.”

Industry Info

When installing a paver driveway, a firm foundation is crucial for ensuring long-term structural integrity.

When it comes to paver driveway installation projects, many homeowners focus entirely on the aesthetic design. However, an even more important aspect to address is the driveway’s foundation. For a driveway to hold up over time, it needs to have a strong foundation, which requires steps like excavation and soil compaction. “With a paver driveway, the weight of vehicles can cause sinking if the foundation isn’t correct,” says Glayston Soares, owner of Mr. Pavers Contractor Services, Inc. in Rodeo. “That’s why it’s crucial to properly excavate the area and add the right amount of base rock, as these will provide the strength that the driveway needs.”

The first step to preparing a paver driveway’s foundation is excavating the existing soil to make way for the incoming base rock. “With a driveway, we usually excavate about 11 inches deep,” says Mr. Soares. “Some companies try to cut corners by only digging 6 or 8 inches, but it needs to be deeper than that to get a really strong foundation.”

Once the excavation is complete, a geotextile fabric is laid down at the bottom. This fabric barrier keeps the base rock from intermingling with the soil below, which provides an added measure of structural reinforcement. Finally, the base rock is poured into the excavated area and compacted in layers to provide a dense, strong foundation for the incoming pavers.

To ensure the long-term structural integrity of your paver driveway, make sure your contractor follows these steps when preparing its foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start my project?
A: It depends on the season—during our busiest times, we can be booked as far as six weeks out. Once we look at our schedule, we’ll be able to book you for the closest available date.

Q: Do you charge for estimates or design work?
A: No, we offer free estimates and design services. Our knowledgeable sales team has a lot of experience helping people develop their design ideas.

Q: Can you give me a breakdown of my project’s cost and timeline?
A: Certainly. We’ll go over the cost, give you an estimated timeline and let you know what to expect during the project.

Q: Do you work in the rain?
A: It depends because certain phases of the job can’t be done in the rain. For example, the demolition and base preparation phases require dry conditions, as does the end of the job when we apply joint sand to the pavers. So, if the weather forecast calls for rain, we might have to delay the project until things clear up.

Q: Does my project require permits?
A: Permits aren’t usually required for driveways and patios, but they are for large-scale retaining walls. We can pull permits for a fee, although you’re welcome to handle that yourself if you’d prefer.

Glayston Soares: From Parcels to Pavers

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

RODEO — After years working in the shipping industry, when Glayston Soares saw an opportunity to get into the paver business, he was confident he could deliver. “I used to be a contractor for FedEx—I had eight trucks and covered a couple of routes for them,” he recounts. “I actually got into pavers through my brother, who at the time was a paver contractor in Florida. He was having some difficulties with his business, so I told him he should move to California and start a company with me. With his industry knowledge and my administrative skills, I knew we’d make a good team. We started as subcontractors for System Pavers, and a couple of years later, we started our own business.”

Today, as owner of Mr. Pavers Contractor Services, Inc., Glayston says his favorite part of his job is wowing his customers. “With the work we do, we’re able to totally transform the look of a home in a matter of days. I love seeing our customers excited and happy with the final products.”

Originally from Brazil, Glayston resides today in Rodeo with his wife, Rosanna, and their children. Outside of work, he likes spending his free time on outdoor activities. “I enjoy going camping and RVing with my family whenever I get the chance,” he details. “I also like barbecuing and hanging out with friends on the weekends.”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Glayston says he’s all about building trust. “I try to put our customers at ease by setting firm expectations and communicating with them throughout the process. I always follow up with them, and if a problem arises, I try to resolve it as quickly as I can. By building trust in these ways, I give my customers confidence that we’ll deliver on what we’ve promised.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Glayston says he’d simply relax. “I would probably buy a lakeside property and enjoy a peaceful, relaxing life watching my kids grow up. I’d probably do a little bit of traveling as well.”

Ask Me Anything!

  • A Critical Aspect of Paver Installation

RODEO — With the high amount of soil movement and seismic activity that occurs in California, it’s crucial for paver features like driveways and patios to have a solid base. Proper base preparation consists of several steps, including excavation, laying down geotextile fabric and base rock compaction. Let’s look at these steps in more detail:

    Excavation

The surface beneath an incoming paver installation must be excavated to make room for the base rock. The recommended excavation depth can vary depending on the type of paver feature. For a backyard patio, 7 to 8 inches will suffice, whereas the recommended depth for a driveway is 9 to 10 inches. Since a driveway has more weight to support than a patio, additional base rock is needed to ensure stability.

    Geotextile fabric

This permeable material is laid down following excavation. By acting as a barrier between the soil and the base rock, geotextile fabric increases a paver installation’s overall stability. While it’s technically only required for driveways, laying down geotextile fabric is a smart step for any paver feature.

    Base rock compaction

After the geotextile fabric is in place, the excavated area is filled in with base rock (typically recycled concrete). The base rock is then compacted using heavy machinery. To ensure thorough compaction, the base rock is usually compacted in two layers.

Due to the importance of these steps, it’s wise to verify that your contractor is following proper procedure when preparing your paver feature’s base. Less scrupulous contractors may attempt to cut corners by excavating to a lesser depth or compacting the base rock altogether instead of in layers. In addition to asking your contractor about their procedure, you can double-check the work yourself—for example, you can use a tape measure to verify correct excavation depth. This will help you ensure your paver feature is built to last.

RODEO — Host, Sarah Rutan: When installing a paver driveway or patio, there’s one phase that requires especially close attention. Today we’re in Rodeo with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Glayston Soares of Mr. Pavers Contractor Services to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Glayston Soares: Here’s a professional tip from Mr. Pavers. No matter who you decide to work to do your project, please make sure they do the proper excavation. Follow the ICPI requirements. Make sure – actually, get a tape, make sure they go the nine inches they supposed to go on driveways, seven inches they supposed to go on backyard patios. Because the most important process on your project, what you’re going to get your high-quality project, will be the base work. So, please, put the string lines, get the measure tape out, and make sure the contractor digging the amount he’s supposed to be digging.
