Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for roofing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. Since first opening more than 20 years ago, Mr. Roofing, Inc. has developed a reputation for providing superior customer satisfaction by fostering a strong customer service culture–a personalized business approach that ensures customers receive focused attention throughout every phase of their projects. “We have a long history of satisfied customers,” confirms President Carlos Rodriguez. “Seventy percent of our business comes from referrals, and that’s a direct result of making sure each customer has a positive experience from start to finish.”

Mr. Roofing provides a variety of roofing services for residential and commercial clients in San Francisco and San Mateo County. In addition to installing and repairing all types of roofing materials, the company installs gutters, gutter protection systems, custom skylights (including solar tunnels), ventilation systems and standing seam metal systems; fabricates architectural sheet metal; integrates photovoltaic solar energy systems and more. The company also offers consultative education services to help customers avoid common roofing project mistakes. “We really care about each customer’s experience,” says Mr. Rodriguez. “We’re here to help them in any way we can, from answering their questions to helping them choose the right products.”

Unlike many of its competitors, Mr. Roofing is a GAF Master Elite installer, which allows it to offer some of the most comprehensive warranties in the industry and handle work that other roofing companies can’t complete. “Nearly 40 percent of the projects we take on are replacements and repairs of old roofs,” explains Mr. Rodriguez. “A lot of times, the homeowner can’t locate the original contractor, so we take over and turn a potentially negative situation into a positive one.”

Another distinguishing feature of Mr. Roofing is its highly experienced employees, each of whom undergoes continuous training in professional practices, technical proficiency and personal growth. “We promote the training, stability and consistency of our staff as a major selling point,” says Mr. Rodriguez. “We’re always striving to stay ahead of the curve to better serve our customers.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Carlos Rodriguez

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Carlos Rodriguez is a 25-year veteran of the roofing industry and president of Mr. Roofing, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2009. He can be reached at (650) 605-3927 or by email.

Carlos Rodriguez: Close to Home

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — After he graduated college, Carlos Rodriguez was on the cusp of a promising career in the corporate world. However, when a need arose at his family’s roofing company, he opted to apply his administrative abilities closer to home. “My dad started Mr. Roofing in 1989, so I’ve been around it since I was about four years old,” he says. “I went to UC Berkeley and took a business management job after I graduated, but then my dad called me and requested my help with his company. We came to an agreement that I would take care of the sales and customer service side while he would handle the production. With my prior education and experience, I was able to implement my knowledge of customer service and business management toward improving the company’s operations.”

In 2006, following his father’s retirement, Carlos assumed ownership of Mr. Roofing, Inc. Today, as president and CEO, he says his favorite part of his job is its inherent versatility. “I appreciate the fact that I’m not always cooped up in an office; rather, I get to run around and meet a lot of really interesting people from diverse backgrounds. And, of course, I enjoy taking in some great views while up on our customers’ roofs.”

Carlos was born in Mexico and came to the United States with his family when he was three years old. Today, as a resident of South San Francisco (where he lives with his wife, Teresa, and their two children), he says he enjoys being part of the local community. “It’s pretty cool to run into my customers while out and about and receive a warm greeting.”

Outside of work, Carlos says the majority of his favorite pastimes involve sports. “I really enjoy sports because they demonstrate the greatness that human beings can achieve.” In addition to playing basketball with friends and attending Golden State Warriors games, he enjoys being a spectator at his children’s sporting events. “My son, Ladislao, plays football for Junipero Serra High School, and my daughter, Nayeli, plays for the San Bruno Storm, a traveling softball team that I help coach. I love to watch them compete—they make me proud.”

In his life and career, Carlos finds inspiration in a quote from Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.”“I think one of the biggest obstacles most of us face is our self-induced limitations,” he explains. “If you go into a situation expecting to fail, it’s a lot more likely to happen than if you believe in yourself and maintain a positive attitude.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Carlos says he’d seek out new opportunities to touch the lives of others. “In my current career, I enjoy educating my clients and coaching my employees in regard to accomplishing our goals, so if I retired tomorrow, I would probably get into teaching, coaching or another field that would allow me to inspire and motivate others.”

  • How to Remove and Prevent Roof Moss

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Does your roof have moss, algae or lichen growing on it? Here’s how to remove it and prevent it from reappearing:

    Cleaning

Make a cleaning solution of bleach and water (if you want something more environmentally friendly, use potassium fatty acid in place of bleach). Spray the solution on your roof—this will kill the moss/algae/lichen growth. Do not attempt to power wash your roof or employ abrasive brushing, as these will do more harm than good. And remember: safety first. If you don’t feel comfortable getting up on your roof, call a licensed roofing professional to handle this job for you.

    Prevention

Even if you completely remove fungal growth from your roof, if the conditions remain the same, it’ll soon return. A great way to prevent growth from reoccurring is to install a zinc strip at the ridgeline of your roof. This metal strip will naturally leach out electrons that eliminate moss, algae and lichen. Ideally, you would have the zinc strip installed when you replace your roof system.

  • A Consideration for Installing Solar

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Installing a solar system on your home can be a great investment, but before you commit, there’s one thing you should consider: the age of your roof.

If you have an older roofing system, installing solar panels might not be a great decision. Why? Both roofing materials and solar panels have a similar life expectancy. If you install new panels on an older roof, the roof will need to be replaced sooner than the panels. And with those panels in the way, the job is likely to be more expensive.

Ideally, you should replace your roof and install a solar system at the same time—that way, you’ll get the most value out of both. It’s also a good idea to have both jobs performed by the same contractor. Having one contractor handle your roof and solar panel installation simultaneously will help streamline the project thanks to seamless planning and communication.

  • The Importance of Roof Ventilation

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Ventilation is a critical roof component that affects both the longevity of roofing materials and the health of the home’s inhabitants. When a roof isn’t adequately ventilated, hot air can become trapped in the attic and produce condensation, which can lead to the formation of mold and mildew. Not only does this prematurely deteriorate the roofing materials, it can contribute to unhealthy conditions in the home and exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms.

A quality roofing contractor will follow a clear-cut formula to ensure proper roof ventilation. This involves an appropriate balance of cool air intake and exhaust to ensure adequate air circulation. The goal is to prevent excessive temperature highs and other conditions that produce condensation and mold.

Considering its importance, if your roofing contractor isn’t talking about ventilation, it should raise a red flag. Ask them to provide a detailed explanation of how they plan to ensure proper ventilation with your roof.

  • Avoiding Water Intrusion Issues with Steep and Flat Roofs

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — While water intrusion is a concern with any roof, different roof styles present different areas of concern. Here are two prevalent roof styles and the water intrusion issues commonly associated with them.

    Steep roofs
Roofing contractors will often espouse the quality of a particular type of shingle, but when it comes to waterproofing a steep roof, it’s what’s beneath the shingle that matters most. Due to a steep roof’s configuration, components like flashings, underlayment and leak barriers are vital in protecting against water intrusion. While proper installation of these components can maximize a roof’s lifespan, when roofers cut corners with waterproofing, problems can begin to arise.

One common scenario is when a roofer replaces a roof’s shingles but neglects to replace flashings and underlayment, which often results in premature leaks. Likewise, citing the moderate Bay Area weather, roofers often neglect to install leak barriers in areas like valleys, skylights, chimneys and roof-to-wall transitions. However, while the local weather conditions aren’t as harsh as in other areas of the country, elements such as wind-driven rain can still lead to water intrusion issues in Bay Area homes that don’t have this added protection.

    Flat roofs
Due to the superior technology used to waterproof flat roofs, flashings and other steep roof waterproofing components typically aren’t applicable. However, there’s another water-related concern when it comes to flat roofs: the home’s drainage system.

The drainage system of a flat roof home often consists of a single drain that goes through a principal wall and into a downspout, which channels all water that falls on the roof. If this drain gets clogged, it can cause water to back up and overflow inside the home. Even worse, it can create a weight issue on top of the roof and potentially lead to a structural collapse. So, if you have a flat roof, make sure you’re proactive about cleaning your gutters and drains.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning for a roof replacement, one thing you should discuss with your contractor is ventilation. Today we’re in South San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carlos Rodriguez of Mr. Roofing to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Carlos Rodriguez: Ventilation is a critical component to all roof systems, especially for the longevity of the roof and also to keep everyone healthy inside the property. If you don’t have proper ventilation, condensation starts to form and drip literally, and mold and mildew can start to grow. And that will affect or deteriorate the roof system, as well as affect people’s health causing asthma, allergies, etc.

There is a clear-cut formula on ventilation. There has to be a balance of cool air intake and exhaust so that air can circulate and keep things from growing. Also, to keep hot air out so it doesn’t prematurely deteriorate the roof materials. If your roofing professional is not talking about ventilation, it should raise a red flag for you because it’s very important for the longevity of the roof system and the health of the inhabitants.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — If you have moss or algae growing on your roof, you’ll want to know the proper way to remove it and prevent it from returning. Today we’re in South San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carlos Rodriguez of Mr. Roofing to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carlos Rodriguez: One question that we get asked often is, how do I clean moss, algae, or lichen off of my roof? And there are two common solutions. One is the installation of a zinc strip at the ridgeline of your roof, and that’ll naturally leach out electrons that kill and eliminate moss, algae, and lichen. And ideally you do that when you install or replace your roof system.

The other solution is the installation or application of cleaning solution. And that cleaning solution is usually one part, like, bleach, and, one-part water, or if you want it more environmentally friendly solution, you would do one part, like, a potassium fatty solution with one-part water. And you spray that on your roof and that’ll naturally eliminate the lichen, algae, or – or moss. Make sure you stay away from power washing or abrasive brushing of your roof because that’ll do more harm than good. And remember, safety first. • Video: Consideration for Adding Rooftop Solar

    Complete Video Transcription

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re thinking about installing solar panels on your home, one thing you should consider is the age of your roof. Today we’re in South San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carlos Rodriguez of Mr. Roofing to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Carlos Rodriguez: Solar is a very smart decision to put onto your property and the most common place you’re going to put it on is your roof. One thing we see, though, is a solar company installing solar onto an older roof system. And that might not be the best decision because that roof is not going to last as long as the solar panels. So, it’s going to cost you more to change your roof eventually. Ideally, you replace your roof and install solar at the same time, and ideally, it’s by the same company. That way, the manufacturer can stand behind the whole project, as well as the roofing and solar company.

  • Video: Increasing the Lifespan of Your Roof

    Complete Video Transcription

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: While most roofs tend to look alike, what really determines the lifespan of roof are its components. Today we’re in South San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carlos Rodriguez of Mr. Roofing, to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Carlos Rodriguez: So, in the San Francisco Bay Area and San Mateo County, where we work, there are predominantly two types of architecture. There’s like a steep-slope roof and a flat roof. And when you look at my roof and someone else’s, another company’s roof, it’s going to look the same because it might be the shingle you’re looking at or the tile. However, what really determines the lifespan of, let’s say, a steep-slope roof, are the components that are inside.

And so a couple things to look out for are things like the underlayment, nowadays, premium underlayments that really help assist a roof system to last a long time. One thing that most roofing contractors don’t include is something like this leak barrier. The leak barrier is what will keep the property dry, let’s say, in wind-driven storms which is what we get a lot around here. It’s important in the critical areas like the valleys, skylights, chimneys, all of those areas that are prone to deteriorate within three to seven years.

And then I think something like there’s a study that shows 98 percent of homes in America don’t have proper ventilation. So, one thing to look out for is some sort of ventilation system for your shingle or steep-slope roof.

This here is a ridge vent where you notch out at the peak of the roof or the ridge, because hot air will naturally rise and then you want it to escape somewhere. The other components important is on the bottom of this there’s an intake vent that kind of blows the wind or the air through there. So, these are a couple of things to look out for to make sure that your roof lasts, you know, 20, 30, 40 years versus just three to seven years.

The other type of architecture that’s in our area is a flat roof, and the most important thing to make sure with a flat roof is that the water is draining properly. Because if it’s not draining properly it provides an extra load where the structure can actually collapse or, you know, leaks can occur if the drains are clogged, et cetera. So, the important thing there is to make sure that it’s being looked at or maintained.

And one of the things that, you know, as a consumer regarding your roof, you should have something like a checklist, a maintenance checklist. That’s something that we provide for our clients to help them stay on top and make sure they have a lasting roof system.
