I'd highly recommend them. There was someone here in the area that I used for years, but he retired. So when I needed some help after that, I looked around, randomly picked them, and I've been very happy ever since.

They're always here on time. Everything was very good and very matter of fact. What they said they were going to do, they did.

Ernie Ongaro, Co-owner

Ongaro & Sons provides a complete range of plumbing services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma and Marin Counties. In addition to servicing, repairing and replacing all types of plumbing systems, the family-owned and operated company has the in-house capabilities to install and repair water heaters and HVAC systems, clean and replace sewer lines, install products that improve indoor air quality, and more.

Co-owner Ernie Ongaro says Ongaro & Sons’ customer-oriented business approach has been the key to its 91 years of success. “Since 1932, we’ve been focused on serving our customers, being responsive to their needs and ensuring their satisfaction. We want them to be so happy with our services that they tell their friends and family about us, which is why we have so many second- and third-generation customers.”

Ongaro & Sons makes sure its technicians are comprehensively trained before they start working in the field, which Mr. Ongaro says allows the company to ensure high levels of quality control. “We spend a lot of time and money on training, both in-house and through organizations like PHCC and NATE. It’s important for us to have technicians who know exactly what they’re doing so we can ensure each client gets the best possible value.”

Comparative Summary

Few plumbing companies earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality and Helpful Expertise. Even fewer can also claim more than 80 years in the industry, but that’s exactly the case for Ongaro & Sons. “We’ve been in business since 1932, and we continue to maintain the same standards of quality and service that have defined us from the beginning,” says co-owner Ernie Ongaro. “Our customers know they can count on us to be here whenever they need us.”

Ongaro & Sons provides a wide range of plumbing services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma and Marin Counties. The family-owned and operated company has the training and equipment to service, repair, and replace all types of plumbing systems, and it’s also qualified to install and fix water heaters and HVAC systems, install products that improve indoor air quality, and more.

Unlike plumbing companies that hire inexperienced technicians in an attempt to reduce their operating costs, Ongaro & Sons emphasizes thorough training for all of its field technicians. “We spend a tremendous amount of time and effort on training, and we even send our technicians to do training programs in other states,” affirms Mr. Ongaro. “We also encourage them to get certified by third-party organizations like PHCC and NATE, which allows them to expand their industry expertise.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Ongaro & Sons proactively follows up with its clients after their jobs are complete to ensure they’re satisfied with its work. “We have a customer service representative who calls every recent client to check in after the job is over,” explains Mr. Ongaro. “That way, if they weren’t happy or they had a concern about something, we’re able to directly address the issue rather than have it come up later.”

Industry Info

Cutting-edge plumbing and HVAC technologies are helping homeowners save substantial amounts of water, energy, and money.

“As time goes on, HVAC and plumbing equipment is getting more and more efficient,” says Ernie Ongaro, co-owner of Ongaro & Sons in Santa Rosa. “Heating and air conditioning equipment is as high as 97 percent efficient, and plumbing fixtures like water heaters are being designed to consume less energy than ever before.”

Besides providing more efficient performance, Mr. Ongaro says today’s HVAC and plumbing products are literally getting smarter. “Plumbing and HVAC products are becoming even more water- and energy-efficient with the application of smart technology. For example, Navien has a tankless water heater that utilizes ‘intelligent preheating technology’ to function in accordance with your daily patterns. Let’s say you get up at 6am every day to take a shower—the water heater will learn that pattern and program the pump to turn on in time to give you instant hot water. If your pattern changes, the water heater will adjust to the new schedule. This is revolutionary technology that can potentially save thousands of gallons of water in your home each year.”

Mr. Ongaro says this “learning” capability is also being applied to modern HVAC technology. “The biggest thing in the HVAC industry right now is the ‘learning’ thermostat. Like the Navien water heater, this thermostat gets to know your daily patterns and preferences and operates accordingly. There are also applications that allow you to control your thermostat via your smartphone or computer. It doesn’t matter whether you’re home, at work or on vacation—you just log into your portal and adjustment the temperature.”

While convenient and cutting-edge, Mr. Ongaro reemphasizes the most important aspect of this technology: water and energy conservation. “Between the improved efficiency and the application of smart technology, today’s plumbing and HVAC equipment saves a tremendous amount of water and energy, which translates to lower utility bills. All in all, it’s definitely worth the investment.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How soon can you start my job?
A: “In most cases, we can start on the same day that you call. We want to minimize the amount of time our customers are without plumbing or HVAC service, so we maintain a large staff that’s able to take care of things in a timely manner.”

Q: Can you give me an estimate over the phone?
A: “Unfortunately, no. In order to get an accurate idea of what needs to be done, we have to send a technician to assess the situation in person. That’s why we charge a diagnostic fee to come out and provide an estimate. However, if you choose to have us do the work, this fee will be applied to your final bill.”

Q: Do you pull permits?
A: “Yes, we always pull permits when necessary. For example, any time you replace a water heater, you’re required to pull a permit. Not every company does this, but we want everything we do to be up to code.”

Q: My toilet randomly turns on and off throughout the day. What’s going on?
A: “If the toilet is turning on by itself, it’s probably caused by a leaking flapper, which is what keeps the water in the tank until you flush. That’s probably what’s causing these ‘ghost noises,’ and it can be fixed by simply installing a new flapper.”
Q: My water bill seems unreasonably high. Can you troubleshoot the problem?
A: “Certainly. There a few different issues that could be causing this, such as a constantly running toilet or a leaky pipe. We’ll do some detective work, find the perpetrator and fix it for you.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Ernie Ongaro

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Ernie Ongaro is a 37-year veteran of the plumbing and HVAC industries and president of Ongaro & Sons, a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (707) 652-9891 or by email.

Ernie Ongaro: A Family Dynamic

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — A third-generation plumbing and HVAC professional, Ernie Ongaro reflects on the longstanding legacy of his family’s business. “My grandfather started Ongaro & Sons in 1932,” he recounts. “All three of his sons followed him in the business, and it was the same way with me, my brother and our two cousins. Now, with my son and nephew joining the company, we’re heading toward our fourth generation of family ownership.”

As president of Ongaro & Sons, Ernie says his favorite part of his job is staying on the cutting edge of his professional field. “It’s really important for us to keep up-to-date with our industry, so we’re always looking for the latest equipment and methods of doing things. I also enjoy watching our technicians start from scratch and progress in their careers. It’s kind of exciting to see the growth of your employees—it gives you a sense of pride.”

A longtime resident of Santa Rosa (where he lives with his wife, Debbie), Ernie has fond memories of growing up in rural Sonoma County. “In addition to running the company, my dad was sort of a gentleman farmer and raised cattle. Growing up on a ranch was fun, even though I used to have to milk the cows twice a day. I still love living in Sonoma County—it’s a beautiful place.”

Outside of work, Ernie engages in a variety of active pastimes, from traveling to restoring vintage cars. “My wife and I love to travel, both within the United States and abroad,” he says. “I also enjoy restoring vintage vehicles. I have a 1942 Willys Jeep that I drive in local parades, and I also restored a 1932 Chevy pickup that I modeled after my grandfather’s first plumbing truck.” Additionally, Ernie enjoys reading and spending time with his family, including his grown children, Ernest and Allison.

In regard to his professional career, Ernie says the family dynamic has always played a vital role at Ongaro & Sons. “Being a fourth-generation business, family is very important to us, and that informs the way we treat our employees and customers. We treat our employees like part of our family and try to be sensitive to their needs. Likewise, we take care of our customers and always follow up with them to make sure they’re 100 percent satisfied.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ernie says he’d hit the open road. “I would probably take a road trip and visit some places in the U.S. that I haven’t seen yet. Actually, I recently finished a book about Lewis and Clark, and I think it would be neat to take a trip that follows the path they traveled.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What kinds of books do you like?
A: I’m a history buff, so I love to read biographies and historical accounts.

Q: What’s your favorite kind of food?
A: Italian.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Vintage cars, trucks and military vehicles.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: Definitely an early bird.

  • Upgrades to Reduce Your Home’s Resource Consumption

SANTA ROSA — Here in California, there’s great concern about conserving resources like water, gas and electricity. If you share this concern, you may be wondering how you can reduce resource consumption in your home. Fortunately, there are many ways to do this, even if you’re on a limited budget. In fact, you may be able to get government assistance with financing water and energy efficiency upgrades. For example, Energy Upgrade California’s Home Upgrade program offers rebates and incentives for a wide range of home improvements, from duct sealing and adding attic insulation to installing high-efficiency HVAC and water heating systems. This is just one of the many programs aimed at motivating California residents to take part in the statewide resource conservation effort.

Even if you’re not interested in upgrading your HVAC and plumbing systems, there are things you can do on a smaller scale to reduce your home’s resource consumption. For example, having your HVAC system serviced and regularly changing its filter can go a long way toward helping it perform more efficiently. You can also reduce your home’s water consumption by adding water-saving faucet aerators and showerheads in your bathrooms and kitchen. Most local municipalities provide water-saving aerators free of charge—all you have to do is screw them onto your faucets.

If you want to know more about which specific areas of your home would benefit from water and energy efficiency upgrades, talk to a local plumbing and HVAC professional.

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to reducing consumption of natural resources like water and energy, there are measures that even the most budget-constrained homeowners can implement. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ernie Ongaro of Ongaro & Sons to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ernie Ongaro: Here in California, by the day, we’re getting more and more concerned about using up all of our resources. Check your local municipality, and there might be some great rebates that you could utilize. For instance, if you upgrade to a high-efficiency furnace or water heater – or even my local municipality of Santa Rosa will give out free little aerators that you can screw into the end of your faucet, and it will reduce the amount of water that you use.
