Comparative Summary

Since 1925, Orinda Motors, Inc. has been servicing cars for motorists in the Lamorinda area. “We offer better service than people expect,” says owner Allen Pennebaker. “It’s a combination of our technical expertise, training, equipment, convenience, and excellent customer service. We have the expertise of a dealership with the feel of a small-town mechanic.”

Orinda Motors makes customer convenience a top priority. If a client is unable to bring their car in, one of the shop’s employees can go to their house, pick it up and deliver it back when the job is done. Rental cars are available on the premises, and the company offers a shuttle service for customers with busy schedules. “We go out of our way to make the car repair process convenient for people,” says Mr. Pennebaker. “This includes gestures like driving customers’ kids to swim practice.”

Orinda Motors’ Express Oil Change & Tire Center–which is located next door to the main facility–offers lube services six days a week with no appointment necessary. It handles oil and filter changes, fluid checks, tire pressure services, alignments, maintenance reminders, and more.

Training is important at Orinda Motors–many of its technicians undergo more than 20 hours of ongoing training per quarter. All have a minimum of 20 years’ experience, and most are ASE-certified Master Technicians. They service all foreign and domestic vehicles, including hybrids. They also have special expertise in servicing, repairing and mechanically restoring classic cars. “We can work on everything because we have five different technicians,” says Mr. Pennebaker. “We have a lot of experience, and that’s important when working on cars in the Lamorinda area. We’ve built a crew of solid technicians, and that’s the core of our success.”

Industry Info

When looking for an auto repair shop, it’s important to find one that’s knowledgeable about the latest industry technology. The importance of technical knowledge can’t be overstated. “Cars are becoming increasingly high-tech, so technicians must be continually trained to stay updated on industry standards,” says Allen Pennebaker, owner of Orinda Motors, Inc. “When shops aren’t doing that, they’re basically parts-changers. There’s a lot of guessing. Sometimes the guesses are lucky, but ongoing training is always a better way to do business.”

Make sure the shop’s personnel are connected to various nationwide resources where they can get up-to-date information and data on specific problems that might come up during the course of a repair job.

After you’ve done your research and found an auto repair shop you trust, it’s a good idea to develop a routine maintenance schedule to keep your car in top running condition. Many repairs become necessary as a result of poor maintenance, so ask your mechanic to help you create a maintenance checklist, which should include things like regular oil and filter changes, tire rotations and fluid checks. It’s important to follow all of the scheduled maintenance required by the manufacturer to keep your warranty valid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My car needs some work. Can you tell me over the phone how much it will cost?

A: Giving a price over the phone without first taking a look at the car is difficult. We offer an excellent value in the sense that a repair is a two-part process—first figuring out what’s wrong with the car, and then fixing it. We charge fairly for both of these things, but we won’t charge for a diagnostic in cases where we can easily figure out the problem without it.

Q: Do you match prices?

A: As a rule, we don’t practice price matching. Often, we don’t agree with the recommendations of other shops, and sometimes we find that certain repairs aren’t even necessary. We don’t guess when it comes to repairs. We think it’s better to determine the right answer ourselves so we don’t do something that’s both costly and unnecessary. Some people are more concerned with shopping around for the cheapest price than finding a place they can trust. It’s shouldn’t just be about cost—you should find an auto repair shop that employs experienced technicians who can diagnose and make the necessary repairs using the best parts available. We don’t compete on price, we compete on value.

Q: How soon will I get my car back?

A: It depends on the extent of the job. We realize how busy our customers are, so we make sure to work as quickly as possible while guaranteeing a professional job in a timeframe that suits their schedules.

Q: Do you do insurance work and extended warranty repairs?

A: Yes, and we’ll even call the insurance company on your behalf to represent you and get the best results.

Q: Do you have high-tech, up-to-date equipment?

A: Yes. As a premium shop, we have all the necessary tools to offer premium service. We regularly purchase new equipment to keep up with technology, and we make sure our technicians are updated on their training.

Q: If I have questions or concerns about my car while you’re working on it, may I check in to see how things are going?

A: Absolutely. Our technicians are always available if a customer wants to talk about the work that’s being done on their car. If you want to come in and see your car—or if you’d like us to take pictures or a video and send them to you—we’ll happily accommodate. We want to make the repair process as comfortable as possible for our customers.

Q: Do you offer any specials or incentives?

A: Yes. You can visit our website (www.orindamotors.com) to find out about the specials we offer at any given time.

Ray Kunz: Back in Action

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ORINDA — After a lengthy stint in the automotive industry, Ray Kunz switched gears and started his own business coaching agency. Years later, he found himself drawn back into the field where he made his start. “I’ve been in the auto industry all of my life,” he affirms. “I started as a technician when I was 17 and gradually climbed the ranks to service advisor, manager, and general manager. In 2001, I left the industry and started a business coaching company. One of my clients was Allen Pennebaker, the owner of Orinda Motors. After working with Allen for 15 years, he asked me to come work for him at Orinda Motors as his general manager. I didn’t want to quit my coaching business, but I did like the idea of getting back into automotive work. So, I hired a couple of coaches to take on the bulk of my clients and went to work for Allen four days a week. I’ve been doing that for the last few years. It’s a lot to juggle, but I enjoy both livelihoods very much.”

When asked about his favorite part of his job, Ray gives a twofold answer. “One thing I enjoy is the variety. Every day, there are new people to work with and new challenges to take on. The other thing I enjoy is customer satisfaction—I love the challenge of keeping our customers happy. It’s hard to make everybody happy all the time, but that’s something we really strive for at Orinda Motors.”

A resident of Elk Grove (where he lives with his wife, Jeanie), Ray says his favorite activity outside of work is camping. “Or ‘glamping,’ as my wife likes to call it,” he laughs. “We have a 40-foot travel trailer that gives us all the amenities of home on wheels. That’s probably the most fun we have, especially when we take the kids and grandkids with us.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Ray says it’s all about having the right priorities. “I think it’s important to put customer happiness before money. That’s a rule I’ve lived by since I got into the managing side of the business. Too many companies put money ahead of everything else, but that’s not the way to be successful in business. Instead, you should focus on making sure the customers are taken care of. If you do that well, money will follow.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ray says he’d go on an epic road trip. “I would hook the trailer and go see the country. I’m not sure if my wife would be on board—she loves the home and our life here—but that’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: An early bird.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Maldives.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Stay inside and watch a movie.

Q: What kinds of movies do you like?
A: I watch pretty much everything, but mostly horror and action movies.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: Probably the future, just to see how everything turns out.

  • Checking Your Tire Pressure

ORINDA — One simple step you can take to maintain your vehicle is to check your tire pressure on a regular basis. Maintaining proper tire inflation will maximize your vehicle’s fuel economy and driving performance, as well as the lifespan of the tires themselves.

Few vehicle owners realize that it’s common for a tire to lose as much as one pound of pressure per month. Changes in temperature can also affect tire pressure: For every 10 degrees of ambient temperature change, you may see up to one pound of difference in your tire pressure. That’s why it’s important to regularly check your tires and reinflate them as needed.

Fortunately, modern technology makes it easy to keep tabs on your tire pressure. When the pressure gets low, your vehicle’s tire pressure sensors will trigger the associated warning light to illuminate on your dashboard. You can find the correct pressure level (known as “psi”) for your tires listed on the driver’s side door jamb of your vehicle. To add air to your tires, simply visit any local gas or service station.

  • 5 Things to Look for in an Auto Repair Shop

ORINDA — With so many auto repair shops to choose from, it can be hard to find one that provides expert and reliable service. That’s why, when searching for the right shop, you should look for the following attributes:

    1. A strong warranty
Besides providing more value for your investment, a robust warranty serves as a reflection of the shop’s confidence in its workmanship. Warranties can range from six months/6,000 miles to 24 months/24,000 miles, so be sure to ask about the specifics.

    2. Quality parts
When it comes to vehicle repairs, quality parts offer a more reliable solution. Not all parts have to come directly from the dealer to be high-quality (although certain parts should). Ask the shop about its policy for using parts, whether aftermarket or OEM. Keep in mind that the quality of parts used on the repair can impact the warranty terms.

    3. ASE certification
Most (if not all) of a shop’s technicians should be ASE Certified. Automotive work requires ongoing education and training, and ASE certification serves as assurance that the technicians are keeping up on theirs.

    4. Good customer service
The shop’s office staff should make you feel comfortable and confident about bringing in your vehicle. They should listen to you and be forthcoming with information about your car and the diagnosis/repair. The best auto shops are happy to educate their customers about their vehicles and what’s needed.

    5. Convenience
If you have to drop off your car at an auto repair shop, you’ll likely need a ride home or to work. Most quality shops provide transportation for their customers as needed, whether internally or by procuring a ridesharing service. Additionally, if you have a long-term repair, ask the shop if it can get you a discount on a rental car.

  • Tips for Storing Your Classic Car

ORINDA — It’s important to care for your classic car, even if you’re storing it for an extended period of time. Here are some things you should do before storing a classic car:

    • Set the tire pressure to the proper level (don’t forget the spare tire).
    • Check all fluids and make sure they’re topped off.
    • Fill up the gas tank. If your car is going to be sitting for more than a couple of months, add some fuel stabilizer.
    • Disconnect the battery (or install a battery disconnect switch). To prevent the battery from draining over time, connect a battery maintainer—this will ensure it stays charged throughout its dormancy.

ORINDA — Hans Hiller: Let’s talk about storing your classic car and a couple of things that are really important when you put it into storage. Okay. Some of the things are, we want to make sure before we put it away that we got tire pressure set, including the spare. A lot of people overlook the spare. If your classic car has one. We want to check fluid levels, make sure that they’re topped up properly and they’re full. Want to make sure the gas tank is full, and that if it’s going to be sitting for more than a couple months, that we put some fuel stabilizer in it.

The other thing you should do is have a battery maintainer. Either disconnect your battery cables or put in a battery disconnect switch, and then put a battery maintainer on the battery. If the battery sits and discharges, which they do normally over general time, the battery will discharge and you won’t be able to get your classic ride running, cause it won’t crank over. Put a battery maintainer on it, leave it there. That way the battery will stay good and charged. It’ll extend the life of the battery, and when you want to ride your classic car, it’ll start right up.

  • Video: Checking Your Tire Pressure

    Complete Video Transcription

ORINDA — Jamie Martin: A very important piece of advice that I have for people that own vehicles. Most simple thing to do is to check your tire pressure. It’s very common for a tire to lose a pound per month. Ambient temperature also affects tire pressure for every 10 degrees of ambient temperature change. There could be up to a pound of difference in your tire.

Every vehicle has the proper tire pressure located in the door. You can go to any service station. Check your tire pressures. It’ll ensure you get the best gas mileage and it’ll ensure your best handling of the vehicle. That was what the invention of the tire pressure sensors came out for. That’s why they’re there. So if they come on, listen to them.
