Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for concrete contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Paradigm Concrete & Construction, Inc., the key to keeping clients happy is simple: take a detail-oriented approach to their projects to ensure they get exactly what they want. “We have very high standards for our work, so we always pay attention to details that most people wouldn’t even notice, like setting forms to match score lines,” says owner Salvador Arteaga. “We’re always making adjustments so we can provide our clients with the best possible concrete work.”

Paradigm Concrete & Construction has been providing concrete and masonry services for residential and commercial clients in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties since 1995. The company installs and replaces everything from sidewalks and driveways to patios and pool decks, and it also utilizes its C-8 specialty license to work with materials like exposed aggregate, slate, tile and brick.

Unlike less experienced concrete contractors that take an “assembly line” approach to each job and sacrifice clear communication as a result, Paradigm Concrete & Construction takes the time to keep its clients informed throughout every step of their projects. “We always keep open lines of communication with our clients so we can update them on our progress and show them things we discover during the course of our work,” affirms Mr. Arteaga. “They really appreciate that because it proves we’re focused on quality.”

Ultimately, Mr. Arteaga sees Paradigm Concrete & Construction’s honesty and transparency as its most important attributes. “We’re always honest with our clients—if they want to do something that isn’t in their best interests, we’ll let them know,” he explains. “We would rather have that conversation than provide something they won’t be happy with in the long run. They trust our experience and know we’re going to work hard to ensure their satisfaction.”

Industry Info

If you’re looking to install new concrete on your property, consider taking a fresh approach with colored concrete.
Gray driveways, sidewalks and patios used to be the industry standard, but with today’s colored concrete products, property owners now have virtually unlimited options when it comes to installing new concrete. Earth shades like brown and tan offer a neutral look, while vibrant colors like red, green and blue can show off the adventurous side of a property.

Colored concrete can even help property owners save money and still get the custom looks they desire by mimicking more expensive materials like flagstone, brick, and pavers. You can also attain a more natural look for patios and walkways by having a concrete contractor install new concrete that has colors, patterns or details that naturally blend into your landscape.

Once you’ve reviewed your color options, you can choose from dozens of textures and finishing techniques to further customize your new concrete. These may include brushing, sandblasting, adding aggregates or colored stones, swirling and ingraining different patterns into the color overlay, creating certain designs, and even giving the concrete a multitone appearance. Colored concrete also serves a functional purpose—it’s more likely to hide oil stains, cracks and other flaws that occur with age.

Regardless of its quality, all colored concrete starts to fade over time. Black concrete tends to fade fast and turns into plain colored concrete within five years, while more pastel shades of concrete hold color better and last longer. Keeping your colored concrete looking like new is dependent on three things: periodic washing, resealing and recoloring. The first sealant should be applied a couple of weeks after the concrete is poured. It’ll help prevent the concrete from staining, keep its “wet” look and seal in the color to stop it from fading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my job?
A: Small projects average one to 10 days from start to finish. Large projects depend on the scope of the work.

Q: Do you handle drainage issues?
A: Yes, we can take care of surface and underground drainage problems, including waterproofing outside foundations.

Q: Will my concrete crack?
A: Unfortunately, all concrete will crack due to its composition, which causes it to shrink as it dries. You can slow the process by watering it as it cures—five to six times a day for at least 28 days, depending on the weather. The hotter it is, the more water you need. That being said, we always use steel to strengthen our concrete and minimize shifting.

Q: How thick will my concrete be?
A: For sidewalks, patios and walkways, the average thickness is four inches. Driveways average four to six inches.

Q: Can I stay in my house while the foundation is being replaced?
A: It’s safe to stay at home during the project, but you should be aware that it will be noisy.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Russell Calhoon

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Russell Calhoon is project manager at Paradigm Concrete & Construction, Inc., a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (925) 385-8993 or by email.

Russell Calhoon: A Firm Foundation

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ANTIOCH — By the time Russell Calhoon started working for a concrete contractor, he already had a firm foundation in the trades. “I’m a third-generation builder,” he explains. “I grew up in construction and worked for my dad from childhood all the way to adulthood. My dad taught me a lot, both on and off the jobsite. He actually taught apprenticeship classes on roof framing and stair framing at a local college, and I often went with him to those. We eventually became partners in a business that held licenses in foundation work, general construction, plumbing, electrical, solar power and sewer work.”

After his father retired, Russell decided to switch gears and transition from hands-on building to management. “I went to work for some high-end general contractors as an estimator, and from there I progressed to project manager and production manager, which gave me a chance to learn the other side of the business,” he says. “During that time, I also went to construction management school and got my license. Later, while in between jobs, I did some subcontracting work for Paradigm Concrete & Construction. I asked the owners if they knew anyone who needed someone with my skills, and they said they did. Ten years later, I’m still here.”

Today, as project manager at Paradigm Concrete & Construction, Inc., Russell says his diverse professional experience continues to benefit him in his day-to-day work. “Having a background in all aspects of construction is really helpful because it enables me to look at each project as a whole. This allows me to properly prepare for each individual phase and prevent problems for subsequent subcontractors on the job.”

A resident of Martinez (where he lives with his partner, Lanakila), Russell spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “My main activity outside of work is bocce ball,” he details. “I belong to the Martinez Bocce Federation and I’m a two-time national champion—I won titles in 1996 and 2003. I also enjoy sailing, which I’ve been doing all my life. I got my sailing license when I was nine years old.” Additionally, Russell enjoys going to the movies and spending time with his two adult sons, Alex and Ryan.

In regard to his professional career, Russell espouses the importance of fairness. “I believe a contractor deserves to make money and their client deserves a quality job for a fair price,” he explains. “As a contractor, if you aren’t being fair with your clients, you aren’t going to last in this business. It’s all about maintaining that balance of mutual benefit.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: The Warehouse Cafe in Port Costa. They have awesome prime rib.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

A: Hang out with Lanakila and watch a movie or play cards.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?

A: Neither—I like being in the moment.

Q: Do you collect anything?

A: I collect Mexican folk art.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Tahiti. My father planned to sail there with me when I was a kid and we never did, but I’m still planning to get there someday.

  • Often-Overlooked Aspects of a Concrete Project

ANTIOCH — If you’re planning a concrete project, be sure to consider the following aspects:

    Minimum cost

Most concrete contractors have a minimum charge for concrete work. If you only have one small project in mind, it might not meet that minimum charge, in which case you may end up overpaying to have it done. For this reason, it’s good to look around and see if there are any other small projects you can incorporate into the job. This will help you get more value for your money.

    Drainage

This is a critical aspect of any concrete project. When water isn’t able to properly drain from the area beneath and around the installation, it often leads to cosmetic problems and even premature failure. Prior to the job, your concrete contractor should make sure there’s adequate drainage for the installation area. If there isn’t, the issue will need to be addressed before moving forward.

    Post-installation maintenance

After your concrete installation is in place, you may feel inclined to hose it down to prevent cracking. However, if you do so, make sure you do it at night and never during the daylight hours. If you hose off your concrete during the day, the water will dry up on the concrete and cause a blotchiness or efflorescence. While this can often be cleaned off with a vinegar/water solution, it’s best to avoid it in the first place.

    Complete Video Transcription

ANTIOCH — Sarah Rutan: When cleaning recently poured concrete, you’ll need to exercise caution to avoid causing accidental damage. Today we’re in Antioch with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Russell Calhoon of Paradigm Concrete & Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Russell Calhoon: If you have recently had concrete placed in your home, it’s not a good idea to hose down the concrete the next day in the daylight hours. If you feel like you want to cool it down, which is a good idea to help prevent some cracking, it’s best to do it in the evening, when the water can’t dry up on the concrete and create blotchiness or efflorescence. You can clean some of this off yourself. You can try, using a solution of vinegar and water, which is a safe way to do it. If that doesn’t cut it, if it’s more severe than that, you should call a concrete professional to clean your concrete and then have it sealed.

  • Video: Addressing Drainage Concerns with Concrete

    Complete Video Transcription

ANTIOCH — Sarah Rutan: To avoid long-term problems with a concrete driveway or foundation, it’s crucial to address drainage concerns prior to installation. Today we’re in Antioch with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Russell Calhoon of Paradigm Concrete & Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Russell Calhoon: So, when I go out to a job to look at a project, the first thing I look at is to try to find where the water goes. So, I will walk up to your house. I will see if there are drains in the curb. And if there are not, then we know that we have to try to get the water away from the house. A lot of problems are created by poor drainage. So, you need to make sure that your [00:00:27 unintelligible] slab concrete can drain. So, it doesn’t create blotchiness. Also, that you get water away from your house to protect your foundation and your long-term investment.

ANTIOCH — Sarah Rutan: Prior to having concrete work done, make sure you’re getting the maximum value for your dollar. Today we’re in Antioch with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Russell Calhoon of Paradigm Concrete & Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Russell Calhoon: Most concrete contractors have a minimum job that they will do. Let’s say it’s, you know, $1,500. Well, you might only have 1 small project that you’re thinking about. Then you believe that that’s not – it’s too much money for a $1,500 job. I think it was the owner that came out and estimated the job. He told me what was right, what was wrong, made recommendations and gave me options. I was asking questions.
