Most people assume their vehicles are safe from intruders when they’re with a valet parking attendant, but it’s important to remember that even though a valet service will do its part to ensure the security of your vehicle, it doesn’t assume legal responsibility if somebody breaks in and steals your valuables. “A valet parking service’s responsibility only goes as far as parking cars in a safe area and making sure they’re locked,” says Rae Ann Reichmuth, owner of Peninsula Parking in San Carlos. “A reputable company will take every precaution to make sure a vehicle is safe, but it won’t require its employees to stand around and guard it.”

One proactive safety measure you can take is removing any visible valuables or hiding them in your trunk, glove compartment or center console. “It’s simple—if something valuable is lying out, it should be put in a less conspicuous place so it doesn’t attract any burglars,” says Ms. Reichmuth. “As a general rule, you should always hide anything that might tempt somebody to break in.”

The importance of signage
Whether for a commercial parking lot or a private event, one of the most essential tools of the valet parking industry is signs, also known as “signage.” Valet services employ signage to help direct and inform drivers as they approach an event or parking area, allowing traffic to flow as smoothly as possible.

The most common types of signs that valet services use are “front signs” and “directional signs.” “Front signs let drivers know to wait for the attendant, and directional signs are posted on corners to let people know where to go,” explains Ms. Reichmuth. “Signage is really important for keeping traffic moving and stopping things like people trying to self-park. And some places have really narrow or windy roads, so the signage helps guide people to where they need to be and keeps them safe.”

Q: Are you properly insured?

A: Yes, we’re completely insured and bonded. If you prefer, we can also offer additional insurance coverage for your event. It isn’t necessary, but some people like to have it to feel a little more secure.

Q: How do you handle pricing?

A: Our proposals are specific to the parameters of each job. We don’t just give an hourly rate or a sum total; rather, each price is based on a variety of factors specific to the event. Our proposals are very detailed because we want each customer to understand everything we’re providing.

Q: How should I go about tipping?

A: Many of our customers tip 15 percent based off the labor on the final bill, although some like to tip individual valets and other employees. When it comes to gratuity, all our tips are held by the event manager and split evenly among the staff at the end of the night.

Q: If it’s raining on the day of my event, can you provide a canopy or tent to keep my guests dry when they’re arriving or leaving?

A: Yes. On a rainy day, umbrella service is included for free. We have multiple types of umbrellas, tents and canopies, so however the location of your event is set up, we can provide what’s needed to keep your guests dry.

Q: Will your valets be able to drive my particular car?

A: Yes, our valets are trained to drive all vehicle makes and models.
