Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for home improvement contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Quality First Home Improvement, Inc., the best way to keep customers happy is to provide a personal touch on their projects, regardless of the size. “A lot of home improvement companies are doing things on digital platforms these days, but we believe in the importance of human contact,” says Marketing Director Mike Licalsi. “It may be convenient to get a project estimate online, but you won’t get the level of accuracy or service you would get from a company that comes to your house and takes measurements in person. We find that working with customers face-to-face brings better results and experiences for everyone involved.”

Quality First Home Improvement sells and installs a wide range of name-brand home beautification products, including roofing, windows, patio covers, solar electric systems, kitchen and bathroom products, Cool Wall® exterior coating, vinyl and fiber cement siding, exterior doors, insulation, garage doors, synthetic grass, and much more. The company has been recognized by industry-leading manufacturer GAF as a Master Elite roofing contractor who has won the Triple Excellence Award for the last seven years, and it received GAF’s prestigious President’s Club Award in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Unlike home improvement companies that hire inexperienced technicians in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Quality First Home Improvement prioritizes a high level of training for each of its employees. “Our installers receive both internal and factory training to equip them with the knowledge and ability to serve our clients as effectively as possible,” says Mr. Licalsi. “Because of the priority we give to training, our customers can rest assured their jobs will be done correctly the first time.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Quality First Home Improvement is its proactive approach to communication. “On every job, we designate a project coordinator who oversees the work and serves as the customer’s main point of contact,” explains Mr. Licalsi. “If the customer has an issue, they can talk to their project coordinator, who will in turn communicate with the crew or the management to find a solution.”

Industry Info

If you’re looking to radically reduce your home’s energy costs, look no further than solar power.

“Solar is the single greatest investment a person can make in their home,” says Gary Kluck, CEO of Quality First Home Improvement, Inc. in Citrus Heights. “Typically, it pays for itself within six to eight years of installation. I have solar in my own home—100 percent of my appliances and systems run on electricity, and my monthly power bill is a mere $12. In a few more years, the system will have completely paid for itself from just what I’ve saved in utility costs.”

To further drive his point home, Mr. Kluck gives some examples from the automotive sphere. “If you were looking at a new car and the dealership told you it would completely pay for itself within six to eight years, you would probably buy it,” he speculates. “Or, imagine you had the opportunity to buy gas at $1 a gallon and you could lock in that price for the rest of your life. Would you do it? Of course you would. This is essentially what buying solar is—you not only produce your own energy, you lock in your utility rate for life.

“Few homeowners realize that in another 30 years, their utility bills are going to be as big as their mortgage payments,” he continues. “Energy prices have continued to increase over time, and it’s going to keep going up as the technology changes and the utility companies have to keep upgrading. That’s why it’s better to install solar sooner than later, because the sooner you can lock in your rate, the less you’re going to pay in the long term.”

For those on limited budgets, Mr. Kluck has good news. “A solar power system is kind of like an erector set in that you can keep adding to it,” he explains. “As your needs change or your budget increases, you can add more and more panels. You can start small if you need to and work up from there. Either way, at the end of the day, you’re going to save money.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my job?
A: It depends on the nature of the job. Your project coordinator will meet with you to discuss a timetable before the job begins. If it looks like the project will go longer than expected, this will be communicated in advance so you aren’t surprised.

Q: Why do you offer so many different products and services?
A: Because our mission is to be your contractor for life. Maybe today you need a new roof, but next summer you might decide to replace your driveway and a year later you may want to install a solar energy system. Whatever you need and whenever you need it, we want to be the first company you call.

Q: Can you provide financing?
A: Yes, we offer many different financing options to help customers in a variety of situations. That way, whether you own a multi-million dollar home or you’re renovating a fixer-upper, you can get the financial assistance you need.

Q: What’s your approach to quality control?
A: We always take additional steps to ensure quality—after all, it’s in our name. For example, when we install a roof with GAF products, we have a GAF representative come out to inspect it. This provides an added measure of assurance that everything was done according to manufacturer standards.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Gary Kluck

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Gary Kluck: On the Upbeat

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CITRUS HEIGHTS – Gary Kluck has a lot on his plate. Between managing a home improvement company with more than 180 employees to singlehandedly running a household, it’s easy to think the stress might get to him now and then. However, Gary says maintaining a positive outlook goes a long way toward achieving both inner peace and outward success. “I’m a ‘glass half full’ kind of guy. I have a very upbeat personality, so when I do get stressed, I just stay calm and look at the positives of the situation, and pretty soon I’m back to normal.”

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Gary got his start in the construction industry at an early age. “I began working for my father when I was about 12 years old,” he remembers. “He was in home improvement and did a lot of concrete work and rough framing. I started out doing mostly grunt work, but I continued to learn and develop my skills, and I’ve been immersed in it ever since.”

Gary’s westward migration began in the early 1980s and included a five-year stint working in Colorado before he eventually reached Northern California. When the company he had been working for went bankrupt following a change of ownership, Gary reached out for advice on his next move. “I called the original owner of the business and asked him what I should do next,” he recalls. “He said, ‘Go do your own thing.’ I took his advice and started my own company, and it was the best decision I ever made.” Today, nearly a decade later, Quality First Home Improvement, Inc. is going strong with Gary at the helm.

In addition to running a business, Gary is employed as a full-time father and homemaker, raising his youngest of four daughters while his wife, Tamara, is pursuing her own career out-of-state. “A few years back, my wife decided to go to medical school to become a physician,” he explains. “She’s actually in Pennsylvania doing her residency right now, so I’m kind of like Mr. Mom for the next couple years.” Though his responsibilities keep him busy, Gary does find time to play golf with his friends on a regular basis. He also takes advantage of the occasional opportunity to get away from it all. “We have a cabin up at Eagle Lake, and we like to go out there to do some boating and fishing and just enjoy the peacefulness of nature.”

Gary attributes much of his personal and professional success to the power of positive thinking. “We attract what we think and feel, so it’s important to feel great and think great,” he says. “That’s what I tell all my employees, and it’s really how I built the company. When we started, there were four of us; now, there are 181. By putting out positive energy, we’ve been able to attract positive people who want to do good things.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: Green Bay Packers.

Q: What’s your earliest memory?
A: Digging up worms in the garden when I was three or four years old.

Q: Do you do any celebrity impersonations?
A: I used to do a pretty good Humphrey Bogart, but it’s been a while.

Q: What were you most known for in high school?
A: Playing basketball. I could really jump—as a 6’1” forward, I could out-jump our 6’4” center!

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Sit by the fire.

Q: If you had a theme song, what would it be?
A: “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin.

  • 3 Things to Check for During a Roof Inspection

SACRAMENTO — If your home is your biggest asset, your roof is its first line of defense. What’s more, ignoring your roof can cost you an exorbitant amount of money in the long term. That’s why it’s important to check on the condition of your roof by performing regular visual inspections. Here are a few things to look for:

    Improper ventilation

Ventilation is a crucial aspect of roof installation, but it often gets ignored. If the attic space beneath the roof can’t “breathe,” the resulting buildup of heat and humidity can cause the roofing materials to deteriorate from the bottom up. That’s why it’s important to assess your roof’s ventilation and look for signs of premature deterioration.

    Dry rot

When water penetrates a roof, it typically leads to the development of dry rot, which can spread and compromise the roof’s integrity. Any visual instances of dry rot found on or beneath the roofing materials should be dealt with right away. If the presence of dry rot is pervasive throughout the roof, replacement should be considered.

    Shingle granule loss

If you see that your shingles have lost a significant amount of their granules, that means they’re either nearing or past the mark where they should be replaced.

Remember that safety is a top priority when getting up on your roof. If you don’t feel comfortable getting up on your roof, you can hire a roofing professional to perform inspections for you.

  • How to Prevent Concrete Cracks

CITRUS HEIGHTS — Many homeowners like to tackle their own concrete projects, whether that means installing a patio cover or renovating a driveway. Laying concrete may seem like a simple task, but there are certain aspects that can complicate the process.

One of the most common problems that homeowners experience with concrete projects is the formation of cracks after the installation has dried. This is often a result of accelerated drying caused by hot temperatures and sun exposure. Since the problem stems from a lack of moisture, the best way to prevent the formation of cracks is to apply a liberal amount of water both before and after setting the concrete.

Start by watering down the ground before you pour the concrete. After laying the concrete and allowing it to set, water it down again. Continue to apply water to the area every day for one to two weeks. This will enable you to keep the concrete from drying out and forming cracks.

  • Video: 3 Signs Your Roof Needs to be Replaced

    Complete Video Transcription

SACRAMENTO — Host, Sarah Rutan: It may be easy to ignore your roof, but doing so can lead to costly consequences. To learn more, we’re in Sacramento with Scott Gabaree of Quality First Home Improvement, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Gary Kluck.

Scott Gabaree: How do you know when it’s time to replace your roof? First of all, the best way to know is to do a visual inspection of your roof. There are three common things that cause a roof to fail. Number one is improper ventilation. If the roof area in your attic space can’t breathe, it can break down the shingles and allow them to depreciate in time. Number two would be visual dry rot. You can see if there’s dry rot being caused around your roof area or if water has penetrated underneath. And number three would be shingle granule loss. You can see over time that you’ve lost shingle granules. Well then, your roof may be time to be replaced. Your home is your biggest asset in most cases, and your roof protects your home. And doing nothing can cost you an exorbitant amount of money in the long-term. You want to make sure that your roof is ready to be replaced for the right reasons at the right time and find the right contractor.

  • Video: Solving a Common Concrete Issue

    Complete Video Transcription

CITRUS HEIGHTS — Host, Sarah Rutan: When laying concrete during a home project, one of the most common problems is cracks forming in your concrete. Today we’re in Citrus Heights with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Gary Kluck of Quality First Home Improvement to learn one tip on how to prevent cracks in your concrete.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Gary Kluck: Concrete work, although it may look easy, its more complicated than you may think for sidewalks, driveways, patio covers.

One of the things you want to do is prevent cracking and in order to prevent cracking you should water down your ground before you pour. Then after you pour the concrete, you finish the concrete and its hard enough to walk on, then you need to water it down again and keep watering it down for the next week or two weeks as long as thirty days.

The problem that you have is if you don’t, the heat sucks the moisture out too fast and it causes cracking. So if you want to prevent cracks, water before and keep it wet afterwards.

They are very neat and clean. My yard was pristine after they completed the job, almost like they were never there. They also assist with financing, and their staff are very responsive. The sales representative, Craig, was great. I have used them for solar, painting, and a patio cover. The patio cover is laser perfect, and the water is channeled to the gutter, instead of pooling on the cover.

They are very good. Their workmanship is the best I've seen. They are the first company I call if I have a project. If they cannot do the work, they refer me to someone who can.
