Erez Gilad: Around the World

RICHMOND — Erez Gilad was raised on his family’s farm in Israel, and it was there that he learned the trade of his forefathers. As he matured, however, he began to develop bigger ambitions—ones that would eventually take him to the other side of the planet. “I moved to California in 2006, right after I completed my service with the Israel Defense Forces,” he remembers. “I had a friend who lived in the Bay Area and owned his own business, which was my dream. He told me about a colleague who was looking for someone to help establish a local restoration franchise. It seemed like a great opportunity, so I decided to take it. I started out doing carpet cleaning, just to become more familiar with the industry, and I gradually earned my general contractor’s license, as well as certifications in air duct cleaning and water and fire damage remediation.”

Today, as owner of Reactic Restoration, Erez says one of his favorite parts of his job is addressing the psychological aspects of the work. “When people experience a structural loss, they’re typically stressed, confused and angry. When we come into their homes with a friendly face and take control of the situation, it relieves a lot of their stress. I enjoy helping our customers and reassuring them that everything will be taken care of.”

Erez divides his time between the Bay Area and his home country, where he lives with his wife, Rinat, and daughters, Noya and Liya. When asked his favorite part about Northern California, he says he appreciates the harmonious integration of its diverse populous. “You have people from all over the world living together and accepting each other as human beings, which I love to see.”

Outside of work, Erez enjoys a variety of active pastimes, from soccer and yoga to running and swimming. “I also love spending time with my family,” he says. “We enjoy travelling all over the world and seeing new places, but we also like going to the beach and just playing in our backyard.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Erez says he would take his interest in travel to a new level. “I don’t know if I’ll ever retire—I’m the kind of person who always needs something to keep me going. However, if I did, I’d like to take a trip around the world. I recently read about a yacht that goes around the world in 180 days, which would be amazing.”

    Terry Barkai: We’re here today to talk about how to do mold remediation safely. Inside, we’re going to see how the structure is contained. The areas that we’re working on are completely sealed; negative areas running; and the guys inside cleaning up [00:00:18 unintelligible] to ensure that no bacteria or spores are still settled in. As you can see, all the guys are wearing PPE to make sure they are safe and your house is safe. HEPA vacuum – [00:00:32 did all the HEPA vacuum] that’s been done through all the wood members of the structure, to ensure the removal of all bacteria and spores.

    And here, you will see now the guys put in all the affected materials in plastic bags to ensure there will be no cross-contamination once we get it out of the site. So, as you can see, some of the mold is just a surface mold that we can basically wipe down with antimicrobial. No chemicals are in use here. And that’s the importance of doing mold remediation safely.

Terry Barkai: A Restorative Career

RICHMOND — Terry Barkai used to build new structures for a living, but today his career is all about restoring damaged ones. “Before working in the restoration industry, I was in general construction,” he affirms. “I met Erez Gilad, the owner of Reactic Restoration, and we had a good connection. Not long after, I went to work for him. With all that was happening with the wildfires in California, fire damage restoration really interested me, much more so than general construction. I figured I could really excel in an industry that interested me, so I decided to give it a shot.”

Today, as business operations manager of Reactic Restoration, Terry says he has two favorite aspects of his job. “First, I like that it’s very dynamic—every day brings something totally new. The other part I enjoy is helping people. When someone is experiencing a crisis and you get to help them out of it, it’s a very fulfilling feeling.”

A resident of Walnut Creek (where he lives with his wife, Eti, and their son), Terry spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy the outdoors, especially if there’s water involved,” he details. “My family and I like to go swimming and boating at local spots like the Sacramento Delta over at Bay Point. I also enjoy playing basketball with my son and visiting old friends.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Terry says the customer is always his top priority. “At the end of the day, my biggest concern is making sure our customers are comfortable and satisfied with our work. By performing the job in a conscientious and professional manner, we leave them feeling safe and secure in the knowledge that we’ve taken care of everything.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Terry says he’d build his dream house. “I’d build a big house near a river, with lots of amenities, including a home theater and a basketball court. That way, the next time we have to shelter in place because of a pandemic, I’ll have plenty of things to keep myself entertained.”

    RICHMOND — Terry Barkai: Today I wanted to discuss a special technique we using when we have projects with fire, smoke, and soot damage over concrete-type of material, versus the normal residential drywall and wood. In those cases, what we utilize is dry ice blasting. As you can see, the guys here using the compressor and the special machine are putting a lot of pressure on the concrete, using the dry ice blasting and removes all the residues of smoke and soot from the surfaces. If a company or contractor does not have the ability to use this method, what they will have to do is a wipe-down of the surfaces. What makes dry ice blasting much more superior and much more effective is that with that technique, you can actually penetrate all the small, little, porous areas and remove all residues. A simple wipe-down like the old days just wouldn’t work in these cases.

    RICHMOND — Tomer Ezra: Hello, my name is Tomer, and I’m from Reactic Restoration. In the past couple of years, California wildfires have become an increasing issue. Just in 2020 alone, over four million acres have burned throughout the state of California. With wildfires, your house may be affected, but you might not be able to see it to your naked eye. Not so much as when you would have a fire inside of your kitchen, and all of the wall’s completely burnt, but it is equally as important to make sure that you take the necessary steps to remediate your house.

    The way that a restoration company would come in and remediate your house is, they would do it in three different steps. First, they would come in and clean the entire affected area. This may be your whole house, or maybe just your kitchen. First, they would clean and wipe down all of the walls, and then vacuum all of the soot and smoke residue that may remain inside of your house. The next step that they would take when everything is nice and clean inside of your property is apply Scentinol, which is a odor-counteractive material that we use to make sure that all affected materials don’t have any remaining odors left inside them or on top of them.

    The next step that we take is placing special machines inside of your property, or even the affected rooms, to ensure that there are no remaining odor molecules inside of your property. The way that we do this is taking the hydroxyl generator, as well as the ozone generator, and running them anywhere between 12 to 48, maybe even 72 hours, depending on how affected your property is. Any time you’re getting a remediation process done on your property, make sure you get it done as soon as possible so you can get back to your normal lifestyle and go back to living that happy life that you live.

    Any time as well that you’re hiring a remediation company, make sure that you understand the protocols and the necessary steps that they should be taking in order to make sure your house is nice and taken care of in the proper form.
