Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for plumbing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Roman’s Plumbing Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take an honest approach to dealing with each customer and help them solve their plumbing problems as quickly and efficiently as possible. “We give our customers options based on their budgets and specific needs and desires,” explains owner Roman Scanagatta. “If they really want to replace an appliance to give a room an updated look, we’re happy to do it, but we never try to up-sell them.”

Roman’s Plumbing offers a wide range of plumbing services to residential clients in Sonoma, Napa, Marin and San Francisco Counties. In addition to repairing, installing and replacing all types of plumbing equipment and fixtures (including hybrid and tankless water heaters), the company repairs and replaces sewer lines, installs gas lines, and performs complete remodels, new construction and drain cleaning.

Unlike plumbing companies that deemphasize the importance of arriving to jobs as soon as possible, Roman’s Plumbing provides a one-hour window for each customer and immediately contacts them if the technician is going to be late. “We understand how frustrating it is to wait for a plumber, so we make sure to always stay in contact with our customers and work around their schedules whenever possible,” says Mr. Scanagatta. “We’re very respectful of their time.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Roman’s Plumbing takes a proactive approach to dealing with customers’ potential plumbing problems by conducting general inspections, advising them on energy-efficient options and performing minor adjustments without being asked. “For example, if we come to a house to change a recirculating pump and notice a wobbly faucet, we’ll tighten it at no extra charge,” says Mr. Scanagatta. “Ultimately, we want to do what’s right for each customer and help them in any way we can.”

Industry Info

Choose the right water filtration system for your home’s particular needs. A whole-house water filtration system is designed to purify the water that comes out of a home’s main water line by using KDF zinc and iron filters to draw out metals and turn them into a soluble form. The systems are somewhat expensive—typically around $3,500—but they last up to 15 years with no maintenance required, which eventually offsets the original price. “The best part about these systems is they filter all the water in the house, not just the drinking water,” explains Roman Scanagatta, owner of Roman’s Plumbing in Petaluma. “That means you can wash yourself with clean water, use less soap in your laundry and dishes, and extend the life of your appliances.” If you’re considering installing a whole-house water filtration system, consider the following tips and information:

Find the right system
Make sure the type of whole-house water filtration system you choose is designed to eliminate the specific types of impurities found in your water supply. If you’re on a city water supply, you’ll want to get rid of toxic disinfecting chemicals like chlorine, chloramine and bromine. “If you see yellow or reddish staining in your sinks and toilets, spotty dishes or smelly water, you’re a good candidate for a whole-house filtration system,” adds Mr. Scanagatta. The best way to determine which filtration system will best suit your needs is to have your water professionally tested. You can also contact a county representative to find out what contaminants are typically found in your area.

High amounts of sediment
If sediment is a problem in your water supply, you’ll need a whole-house sediment filter. Multiple water sediment filters are the best option, starting with a 30-micron unit and progressing to a 5-micron unit. You can also purchase reusable sediment filters to save money in the long run.

Chemicals
Most chemical contaminants can be removed with a granular activated carbon filter. Activated carbon is one of the most effective materials for removing chlorine (a 99 percent effectiveness rate), which is the most common chemical found in municipal water supplies.

Iron
Iron can be removed with a high-quality sediment filter if it’s in the form of rust. If it’s dissolved iron, you’ll need an ion exchange whole-house water filter or an iron filter to remove it. A water analysis report will tell you what type of iron you have.

Adequate water flow rate
Flow rate determines how much water travels through your home’s filter in one minute. The best whole-house water filtration systems have a flow rate of at least 7 gallons per minute, which allows them to maintain uninterrupted pressure during your home’s highest usage times. To ensure you get the proper flow rate, it’s important to purchase a unit that’s sized for the number of people in your household, the size of your home and the number of bathrooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you charge by the job or by the hour?

A: We usually charge by the hour, but we have a fixed rate for certain types of projects, like new water heater installations or disposals. Even though we work by the hour, we complete each job as fast as possible without cutting corners on quality.

Q: Do you give quotes over the phone?

A: We pride ourselves on providing honest and fair pricing; therefore, we can’t quote an exact figure until we actually see the plumbing problem in person. We are always happy to come out and provide our customers with a free estimate.

Q: Do you work on gas lines or HVAC units?

A: Not only do we install and repair gas lines for fireplace inserts, outdoor barbeques and fire pits, we also educate our customers on the importance of gas line safety by highly recommending that each household have an automatic gas shut-off valve installed in order to protect our customers’ most precious assets: their families, pets and homes. We do not service HVAC units at this time.

Q: Should I have a tankless water heater installed in my home?

A: If saving energy and maximizing your hot water output is important to you, then you should definitely consider installing a tankless water heater. We can also install a re-circulating pump without opening the walls or adding any waterlines. We’re always looking for ways to improve our customers’ home energy use.

Q: What should I do if I encounter water damage?

A: If you find water damage in your home, you should immediately contact a company that provides water damage restoration services. If water damage isn’t taken care of quickly, it can lead to serious problems like dry rot and mold.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Roman Scanagatta

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Roman Scanagatta is a 21-year veteran of the plumbing industry and owner of Roman’s Plumbing, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2011. He can be reached at (707) 948-6178 or by email.

Roman Scanagatta: Plumbing Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

PETALUMA — As soon as he reached adulthood, Roman Scanagatta took advantage of a professional opportunity that would set him up for long-term success. “After high school, my fiancée and I wanted to get married, so I knew I needed to find a career that would pay the bills,” he explains. “I had a friend who was apprenticing at a local plumbing company, so I asked if he could get me an apprenticeship as well. Basically, I figured learning a trade would give me skills I could take anywhere, so when I saw the opportunity to do so, I went for it.” After working for the same company for 15 years, Roman founded his own plumbing business in 2010.

Today, as owner of Roman’s Plumbing, Inc., Roman says his favorite part of his job is its dynamic character. “I love being out and about, working at a different location every day and encountering new problems to solve. I also enjoy the opportunity to meet new people—in fact, a lot of my former clients have become good friends of mine.”

A resident of Petaluma (where he lives with his wife, Eleni, and their two daughters), Roman expresses his appreciation for its quaint yet cultured character. “Petaluma is a great town. It has grown a lot over the years but still managed to maintain its small-town feel. It’s also located at the edge of Marin and Sonoma Counties, which enables our company to service a sizeable area.”

When he’s not working, Roman can usually be found with his family. “As a business owner, I don’t have a lot of down time, so when I get it, I like to spend it with my girls,” he affirms. “One of my favorite activities is making food with my daughters. I’ve always enjoyed cooking and actually considered becoming a chef before I became a plumber. I taught my daughters how to cook and bake, and now they’re better at it than me.” Roman also enjoys attending his daughters’ sporting events (“My younger daughter plays basketball and my older daughter plays volleyball.”) and going on dates with his wife.

In regard to his professional career, Roman says he’s a big proponent of customer education. “We make it a point to give our customers options and help them make informed decisions. Plumbers often get the reputation of being rip-off artists who take advantage of unknowing people, so we’re always working hard to change that perception. Basically, it all comes down to educating customers and taking care of them the same way we take care of our own families.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Roman says he’d take an international vacation. “My wife has family in Greece, so if I were to retire, I’d probably book a trip there with my family. I’d also bring along a few books. I love to read but I never have time for it, so I’d take the opportunity to catch up on my reading.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite book?
A: “The Sicilian” by Mario Puzo.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The San Francisco Giants.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Mi Pueblo in Petaluma.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Italy—I’m of Italian heritage and I still haven’t been there.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for dessert?
A: New York cheesecake.

  • A Better Choice for Water Filtration

PETALUMA – If you want to have filtered drinking water in your home, you have a couple of options. One is a reverse osmosis system, which is effective at removing chlorine, lead and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in tap water. However, this type of system has a couple of drawbacks. First, while it removes a lot of the bad things from tap water, it also removes a lot of the good things, such as calcium and magnesium. What’s worse, it’s inefficient: As a result of its multi-phase filtration process, for every gallon of water a reverse osmosis system produces, four more gallons are lost.

A better choice for water filtration is a single-stage point-of-use filter, which removes the bad things from drinking water but doesn’t go overboard like a reverse osmosis system. Prior to installing a water filtration unit in your home, it’s important to have a plumber assess your water situation. For example, if your home runs on well water, you’ll likely need a special filtration system. Also, you should consider maintenance costs whereas some filters require almost no maintenance, others require periodic cartridge replacements, which can cost up to $400 each time.

    Complete Video Transcription

PETALUMA – Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to saving water in your home, there are a couple of things you might not be aware of. Today we’re in Petaluma with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Roman Scanagatta of Roman’s Plumbing to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Roman Scanagatta: Due to the longstanding drought here in California, there are many ways that we can all conserve water in the home. One is installing a hot water recirculation pump. What a hot water recirculating pump does is [it] provides hot water to your bathrooms, kitchens –wherever it takes a long time to get hot water, we can get it there within ten seconds, saving you energy costs, water costs, and sewer costs. It’s not very expensive or difficult to install, but it’s a great way to save water.

A lot of people are interested in having a reverse osmosis water filtration system installed under their sink for drinking water. It’s a forced-H filtration process, which takes all the bad minerals and sediment out of the water, although it also takes out all the good components of the water. The only issue that a lot of people don’t know about is for every gallon of water that the reverse osmosis system produces, four gallons go down the drain, which is a huge water waste.
