Industry Info

When it comes to hiring a moving company, experience and training matter.
For many people, the moving industry has a bad reputation, but that’s usually because they don’t know what to look for when hiring a mover so they make decisions based on price alone. This can lead to hiring cut-rate companies that don’t offer quality services or maintain professional moving crews, which can put you and your property at risk. That’s why it’s important to carefully evaluate moving companies and make sure every candidate is licensed, carries insurance, and has a record of customer satisfaction.

Robert Rosado, owner of Rosado Movers in Mountain View, says it’s also important to ask about the specific experience and qualifications of the crew members who will be working on your job. “Movers have to adjust to every situation. Experience matters because not everyone can move a 4,000-pound safe from the third floor without damaging walls, floors or stairs.”

Mr. Rosado adds that experience isn’t the only thing to look for in a mover. “You should also make sure the company has the right equipment, training and personnel to find solutions to common moving problems,” he offers. “There’s no replacement for the experience and knowledge you gain from spending years in the moving industry.”

Make sure your moving company has the right experience for your particular job.
Along with typical questions about licensing, insurance, dates and locations, be sure to ask multiple questions about the specifics of your project. Here are some examples:

  • Do you have experience with this type of move?
  • Can you move pianos, safes, fragile items or oversized items? How will you pack and transport them?
  • Who will be doing the work and what are their specific qualifications and training?
  • How will you pack and move specialty items like TVs, electronics, antiques, and art?
  • Will you provide all of the services or will you use subcontractors for portions of the work?
  • What if something gets damaged?
  • What guarantees and insurance do you provide?
  • Can you give me a list of past customers whose moving projects were similar to mine?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How big are your moving trucks?
A: Each of our trucks is 26 feet long and can accommodate a seven-bedroom house. If one truck isn’t enough for all of your belongings, we’ll bring in another truck.

Q: What happens if something gets broken during the move?
A: We’ll either repair it, replace it or pay for it within 48 hours.

Q: How will you protect my home?
A: We’ll use special coverings to protect the door jambs and put down butcher paper, plastic, and blankets to protect the floors. We’ll also wear rubber gloves and use hand sanitizer to keep you and your home safe and clean.

Q: Are your employees trustworthy?
A: Absolutely. Every person on our crew goes through rigorous training on safe moving techniques, disassembly and reassembly, and other important aspects of the job.

Q: What should I do with heirloom gifts and artwork?
A: No matter how much insurance you have, some items can never be replaced. If you own something that’s extremely valuable or sentimental, we always recommend moving it yourself. If you can’t, we’ll make the necessary adjustments to protect those items as much as possible.

Q: Do you take precautions against COVID-19?
A: Yes. In the moving industry, everyone has to be vaccinated. If businesses require COVID testing, we have to pass a test in order to enter the building. You can also request to see our employees’ vaccination cards. Our crews use masks, rubber gloves, shoe covers and hand sanitizer to keep everyone safe.

Robert Rosado: Bigger and Better

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

MOUNTAIN VIEW — After a long career in the commercial cargo industry, Robert Rosado decided it was time to take things to the next level and start his own moving company. “My career began in the 1980s, when I started working for a cargo company called Emery Worldwide Airlines,” he remembers. “I started out handling freight and later got into customer service, billing, quotes, and contracting with vendors for domestic and international shipping. Later, after moving to California, I decided to put my experience into action and started my own moving company. I wanted to create something bigger and better that would provide my friends and family with the opportunity for a better life. It was a risk, but I’m glad I took it.”

Today, as owner of Rosado Movers, Robert says his favorite parts of his job are the challenges and rewards. “I enjoy the challenge of taking on a large job, coordinating the people and equipment, and successfully executing it. When all is said and done, it’s a great feeling to see what we accomplished. I also like seeing my employees grow, both professionally and in their personal lives. Having a good job enables them to upgrade their quality of life, so it’s very rewarding to see that.”

A resident of Mountain View (where he lives with his wife, Brianne, and their six children), Robert likes to spend most of his free time outside. “Fishing is one of my favorite activities, whether fly fishing or sport fishing on the ocean,” he says. “My kids and I like to go hiking and camping. I also enjoy mountain biking and motocross. I definitely like being adventurous.”

In his life and career, Robert embraces the philosophy of the Golden Rule. “Treat others like you want to be treated,” he affirms. “Integrity, respect, kindness…these are the virtues I teach not only to my kids but to my employees, and I think that has been a big part of my company’s success. It’s not because of our fancy uniforms, clean trucks or beautiful warehouses—it’s because of the quality of the people who execute each job.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Robert gives a two-tiered answer. “First, I would make sure that everyone who has contributed to my professional success is taken care of. After that, I’d probably retire somewhere in the Caribbean. I’d have a little charter boat and spend my days fishing, teaching others how to fish, and exploring the ocean.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Los Altos Taqueria in Mountain View.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I collect baseball cards, Marvel comic books and guns.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The Chicago Cubs. I was born and raised in Chicago, and my dad used to take me to games at Wrigley Field.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: New Zealand.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Turn on the faux fireplace, relax and watch a movie.

  • 3 Things to Look for in a Moving Company

MOUNTAIN VIEW — When hiring a mover, you want to be sure to work with a legitimate, reputable company that pays attention to the finer details of service. Here are a few things to look for:

    1. Professional credentials
Before hiring a moving company, it’s important to verify professional credentials like licensing and insurance. Any legitimate mover operating in California should be licensed with the state. To verify if a mover has a current license, click here. Additionally, a moving company should have both liability insurance (at least $1 million worth of coverage) and workers’ compensation insurance. These dual insurances will guarantee you’re covered in any scenario, from property damage to worker injury on the job.

    2. Cleanliness and sanitation
Since movers service a lot of different customers, there’s always a possibility for cross-contamination of things like germs, bacteria, and pests like lice and bedbugs. That’s why it’s important to ask your moving company about their approach to cleanliness and sanitation. For example, do they wash and disinfect their trucks between moves? Do their employees wear rubber gloves when handling bedding and other sensitive materials? How often do they change their gloves? These are just a couple of steps your mover can take to protect you and your household.

    3. Professional performance
Most quality moving companies have their employees wear uniforms, but everyone knows appearances can be deceiving. In addition to looking professional, your movers should perform and conduct themselves as such. That’s why it’s wise to read a company’s online reviews and get a sense of their performance and behavior on the job. By working with a mover that’s respectful and conscientious of you, your household, and your belongings, you’ll have a much better experience.

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Robert Rosado: When you’re considering a mover, the bid is very important. Their credentials, their insurance, their license, their workman’s comp is very important.

Also see what the truck looks like inside and out. See if they have all their tools and equipment, dollies, hand trucks hand tools to take off a door when they want to bring a large object. Disassemble things.

Make sure that they’re prepared. Make sure that the men are in uniform. Make sure they’re clean. Make sure the truck is clean. Make sure they protect your home, the floors, the walls. You can do your homework, read some of their reviews. All of this information is available to you.
