Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for hardwood flooring companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is taking a passionate, detail-oriented approach to every project, regardless of its size. “We really enjoy what we do and put a lot of effort into our work, which ultimately allows us to produce high-quality results,” says owner Roy Nelson. “Our goal is to turn each floor into a true work of art.”

Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring has been installing, refinishing and repairing hardwood, laminate and pre-finished floors for residential and commercial clients throughout the South Bay since 1997. The company is qualified to work with all types of wood, finishes and stains, and it also provides customized installation and layout services for clients with unique remodeling projects.

Unlike less experienced hardwood flooring companies that devalue the importance of consistently communicating with their customers, Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring makes sure its clients are informed and involved throughout every step of their flooring projects. “By communicating clearly with our customers, we’re able to understand exactly what they want and meet or exceed those expectations,” says Mr. Nelson. “Whether it’s a sanding and finishing job or a complete home remodel, we provide the same level of care and communication throughout the entire process.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring is its ability to use a variety of state-of-the-art equipment to work on its customers’ floors, including an advanced dust control system that greatly reduces the amount of dust created during the refinishing and sanding process. “Dust is an inevitable part of working on hardwood floors, but the equipment and methods we use help us limit it as much as possible,” says Mr. Nelson. “Our technicians are trained to leave every jobsite as clean as they found it.”

Industry Info

When it comes to choosing a hardwood floor cleaning product, less is more. Many hardwood floor cleaning products claim they can make floors look like new by “bringing back their shine,” but the truth is, many of these self-advertised “finish revitalizers” contain harmful additives, oils and silicones that can cause wood to wear prematurely. “Most of these products would be considered contaminants by the flooring industry, so it’s important to know their side effects before applying them to your floors,” cautions Roy Nelson, owner of Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring, Inc. in San Jose. “It’s safer to use products that don’t contain potentially harmful additives. You can even use something as simple as vinegar and water to clean your floors.”
When it comes to maintaining the hardwood floors in your home, it’s important to call a flooring specialist at the first signs of wear, as the extent of the maintenance needed often depends upon the severity of the wear. The most important preventative maintenance step you can take for your hardwood floors is adhering to a regular refinishing schedule—typically, hardwood floors need to be refinished every seven to 10 years. A floor that’s been properly maintained will only require some light sanding and a new coat of finish, but a floor that has extensive wear will require more expensive repairs.
When looking for a company to install a wood floor in your home, make sure you find one that can fully explain your options and suggest a floor that best suits your needs. Flooring contractors have a range of abilities and experience—some are geared toward consultation and retail sales, and others specialize in custom installations and hands-on staff expertise. Look for a local company that can address your particular situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When can you start my flooring project?

A: It depends on our schedule, but we can usually take on any type of flooring job with two or three weeks’ notice.

Q: Can you minimize dust when you’re working on my hardwood floors?

A: There’s no such thing as ‘dustless’ hardwood floor refinishing, but we take several steps to reduce dust as much as possible, including putting up plastic barriers and using a dust control system that deflects dust from the worksite.

Q: Do you take deposits?

A: No. A lot of contractors take money upfront just to lock their customers into their projects, but we don’t do that. We want to build lasting relationships with our customers, so we never ask for money until their projects are complete. They know that if they call us in the future, we’ll be here.

Q: What’s the difference between wood flooring and laminate flooring?

A: Wood flooring is comprised of a solid wood (or wood wear) surface with a wood backing. It can be refinished, recoated and re-sanded to look like new, and if you maintain it properly, it can last for generations. Laminate flooring consists of synthetic backing with a high-pressure laminate surface. It isn’t renewable, which means it has a relatively short lifespan.

Q: What’s your approach to quality control?

A: For us, quality control starts at the very top. Our owner, Roy Nelson, is very hands-on, and the people he hires are all qualified journeymen who know how to provide quality work.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Roy Nelson

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Roy Nelson is a 29-year veteran of the wood flooring industry and owner of Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring, Inc., a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (408) 622-0366 or by email.

Roy Nelson: All in the Family

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE – For Roy Nelson, installing hardwood flooring isn’t just a job—it’s a family tradition. “My family background consists of electricians, drywallers, framers and hardwood flooring installers, so I basically grew up around all those trades,” he explains. “Because of my roots, I consider my company a family business and continue to practice the same values and traditions that I was mentored with.” After 20 years, clients of Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring, Inc. continue to benefit from Roy’s combination of expert knowledge and old-school principles.

A native of the Bay Area, Roy lives in San Jose with his wife, Ai, and their four children. He says one of the things he appreciates most about the area is the melting pot mentality that characterizes it. “The Bay Area is a culturally rich and diverse place, but it also has a very inclusive mindset. There aren’t many areas in the country like it. New York might have a similar amount of diversity, but it doesn’t blend the way it does here.”

When he’s not finishing or installing hardwood flooring, Roy is likely to be found outdoors, whether hiking, biking or swimming. He also stays actively involved with his kids’ scout troops. “Between my four kids, I have Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, so I help out with a lot of their activities, from campouts to canned food drives and other charity events,” he says.

When asked the first thing he would do if he could retire tomorrow, Roy says he would head for the Big Island. “I love the island of Hawaii. It’s not that I’m much of a surfer, although I might be if the water wasn’t so cold here. I just really enjoy the laid-back vibe, plus there are a lot of great opportunities for hiking and swimming.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you have a favorite sports team?
A: I like the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco Giants. It’s kind of a mismatched allegiance, but those are just the teams I grew up rooting for.

Q: If you could immediately master a musical instrument, what would you choose?
A: Piano.

Q: Who’s your favorite movie monster?
A: Frankenstein.

Q: What’s your favorite dessert?
A: Chocolate chip cookies.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
A: My good friends call me “Roy Boy.”

Q: If you had a warning label, what would it say?
A: “Contents Under Pressure.”

  • The Advantages of Vinyl Flooring

SAN JOSE — Vinyl flooring products like luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) have become increasingly popular in recent years. This is primarily due to the many practical advantages they provide. One of the biggest advantages is that they’re both waterproof flooring systems. Unlike laminate flooring (whose water-absorbent backing causes it to swell up when wet), today’s vinyl flooring products have backings composed of blended wood and stone fibers. This unique composition enables products like LVP and LVT to withstand any level of moisture, from mere humidity to major flooding.

In addition to being waterproof, modern vinyl flooring is heat resistant. Old vinyl flooring products would often bubble or swell when exposed to excessive heat, which could cause their joints to expand and come apart. Thanks to improvements in design, that’s no longer an issue.

A third advantage of vinyl flooring is ease of installation. Since vinyl flooring systems are “floating,” they don’t need to be glued or nailed down, which means they can be installed over virtually any type of subfloor (wood, concrete) and in any type of environment (below or above grade). This makes LVP and LVT excellent options for those with challenging environmental circumstances in their homes.

Lastly, in addition to the aforementioned practical advantages, vinyl flooring looks great! It’s available in several different colors and styles, and it can even be designed to mimic the look of natural wood flooring.

  • The Right (and Wrong) Way to Clean a Wood Floor

SAN JOSE — While there may not be one right way to clean your hardwood floors, there are definitely several wrong ways. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is using an inappropriate cleaning product on your floor. In particular, cleaners labeled as “finish revitalizers” or that claim to “bring back that old shine” can actually cause irreparable damage to a hardwood floor. They may sound good, but such advertising strategies should serve as a warning sign.

The reason you should avoid finish revitalizers and similar products is because they typically contain some kind of oil or wax component, which is considered a contaminant by flooring professionals. When you use this kind of product to clean your floors, the contaminants it contains can actually become permanently embedded in the flooring. This can make refinishing impossible, as the presence of contaminants will inhibit a proper adhesive bond between the finish and the floor.

In contrast, the best ways to clean hardwood floors tend to be the most basic. Even a simple vinegar and water solution will provide an adequate level of cleaning without causing any damage to your floors. So, avoid the gimmicks and stick with old-fashioned methods to keep your wood floors looking and performing their best.

  • The Attributes of Prefabricated Flooring

SAN JOSE — When it comes to installing a new floor, one of the most important choices to make is between a prefabricated product and a solid wood product. Here are a few attributes that distinguish prefabricated flooring:

    Color
One of the beneficial qualities of prefabricated wood flooring is the variety of colors that are available. Prefabricated wood flooring can be finished in a way that offers a wide range of colors and shades within a single wood species.

    Texture
Another unique attribute of prefabricated wood flooring is its texture. Whereas a solid hardwood floor is perfectly flat and uniform, prefabricated flooring consists of several pieces that are fitted together like a puzzle, creating small micro bevels or eased edges between each board. This attribute of the floor may factor into your decision between prefabricated and solid wood. For example, if your home has a rustic look, a solid, unfinished product may be a better fit.

    Versatility
While prefabricated flooring is commonly known as being an engineered, composite wood product, consumers may be surprised to learn it’s also available in solid, unfinished hardwood. Both pre-finished composite and unfinished hardwood products are designed to fit together in a similar fashion, but the latter leaves the option of finishing the floor after the installation.

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to replace the floors in your home, consider the advantages of a waterproof product. Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Roy Nelson of Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Roy Nelson: LVT and LVP, known as Luxury Vinyl Plank and Luxury Vinyl Tile, has also now started to become known as waterproof flooring. With the waterproof flooring systems, you have a greater advantage over the laminate floors. Laminate floors will swell because of their high-density fiber materials that make up their backers, they will absorb water. With the new LVT and LVP plank floors, you have waterproof flooring, which consists of the wood fiber cores, stone fiber cores, many different companies have developed many different blends. With the invention of the click style floors that Pergo started, now you’ve got your LVT and LVP planks are now click, too. So, it’s got that horizontal bond so it’s neither glued nor nailed, it’s floating floors.

With the floating floor, it gives you a greater advantage over different subfloors. So, you can float over wood subfloors, you can float over concrete subfloors. These floors can be installed below grade, they can be installed on top of concrete, they can be installed inside of your condos. The sound deadening ability of the new stone cores also gives it a greater ability to resist heat. The old vinyl flooring would bubble or swell due to high heat, which would allow this joint to expand and come apart. These are just some of the advantages of the new LVT and LVP, also known as waterproof flooring.

  • Video: Introduction to Pre-Finished Flooring

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: Before embarking on a home remodel, you’ll first want to know your options. Today, we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Roy Nelson of Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring to learn about a few options with pre-finished flooring.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Roy Nelson: Some of the qualities of pre-finished flooring are the different colors. There’s a wide range of different colors within the same species or product. This is a hickory product with a natural finish but this might surprise you as well that this is also a hickory product. Pre-finished flooring is finished in a way where they can get a wide range of colors within lighter species to change those colors.

With pre-finished flooring you see the small micro bevels or eased edges between each board which makes the difference between sanded finish floor which is flat and smooth and uniform and the pre-finished flooring which is brought together and installed into your home to make a smooth surface.

Within the pre-finished flooring you have engineered floors which are engineered in a plywood manner but it also may surprise you that it also comes in a solid wood surface.= so that it can be sanded and finished later. All these floors are engineered with a micro bevel or eased edge that is one clear indication of the difference between a pre-finished floor and a sanded finish floor.

I recommended them to a neighbor. I told her to expect to be out of your house for at least a week and when they tear out the carpeting to look over the flooring to see if there is any wood that you don't like and to let him know which ones you want replaced. We have a 60 year old house and we had him tear out carpeting and re-do the hardwood floors that were underneath.

It was quick. He did it in a couple of days and we were back in within 6 days. They did a good job.
