One option Mr. Severs suggests is hybrid paint. “Hybrid paint is an oil-based material that has been emulsified in high temperatures so it becomes water-soluble,” he explains. “The oil emulsion improves the paint’s bond to the substrate, which is why hybrid products provide superior adhesion and durability. Additionally, hybrid paints are self-priming, which can save you money on the job.”

After you choose the right type of paint for your project, consider making a request for your painting contractor to utilize environmentally-friendly application methods. One of the most important methods involves minimizing the presence of airborne particles within your home, which can be achieved by putting up plastic barriers around the worksite and using vacuum-activated sanders. Greg Severs: Painting His Way

CASTRO VALLEY —After painting his way through high school and college, Greg Severs figured it only made sense to keep going. “I started painting during the summers in high school and continued to paint part-time during college,” he recounts. “My goal after college was to start my own business, and since I knew painting, I decided it might as well be a painting business. My twin brother was also a painter, so we decided to join forces and started S & S Painting and Coatings in 1978. Shortly after, he left the country to play professional basketball in Europe, so I took over and have been running things myself ever since.”

Today, Greg says his favorite part of his job is seeing the fruits of his labor. “I enjoy the satisfaction of seeing a house or building take on a new, fresh-looking appearance in a short amount of time. And, of course, it’s always nice to put smiles on my customers’ faces.”

A resident of Castro Valley (where he lives with his wife, Janice, and their family), Greg spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I’m a gardener and I enjoy growing fresh vegetables, both for my family and to give to friends and customers. I also enjoy playing basketball in the backyard with my kids.” Additionally, Greg likes taking family trips to destinations like Twain Harte, Hawaii and Cancun.

In regard to his professional career, Greg operates under a simple ethos. “I try to treat others with honesty and fairness,” he says. “That goes for both my customers and my employees. By keeping everyone happy, it makes for high customer satisfaction and an enjoyable work environment.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Greg says he’d book a cruise with his entire family. “I’ve done quite a bit traveling through Europe, but there are other areas of the world I still want to visit. I think the next destinations on my list would be China and South America.”

A: I played baseball and basketball, and competed in track throwing the shot put and discus. I actually got college scholarships in three different sports, which is pretty unique. I played basketball at the University of San Diego on a scholarship, then I transferred to Azusa Pacific University on scholarships in football and track.

Q: What’s your favorite family tradition?
A: Our Christmas Eve celebration. We play Pirate Bingo and have a bunch of goofy gifts as prizes.

A Coating for Worn Exterior Siding

CASTRO VALLEY — When preparing for an exterior painting project, it’s important to inspect the condition of your siding. Particularly on the southern and western exposed elevations, standard plywood siding commonly sustains splits and cracks (known as “face-checking”), which is caused by expansion and contraction over time. Since plywood siding is composed of several layers glued together, if these splits and cracks go deeper than the outermost layer, they’ll pose an increased risk of moisture intrusion. Merely painting over them won’t resolve the issue—the splits and cracks will return soon after, and along with them, the risk of dry rot from moisture intrusion.

Fortunately, there’s a product that can prolong the life of worn siding boards: elastomeric polymer waterproof coating. Applied prior to painting, this coating fills in cracks and splits and seals the siding from moisture intrusion. It’s also flexible, which means it won’t fail when the plywood expands and contracts. By prolonging the life of your siding boards, an elastomeric polymer waterproof coating will secure the integrity of your paint job and prevent dry rot and similar problems.

Host, Sarah Rutan: If you see bubbles forming on areas of your house paint, you might not know what’s causing this. To get an explanation, we’re in Castro Valley with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Greg Severs of S & S Painting and Coatings.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Greg Severs: Sometimes underneath the paint film you have non-breathing membrane, oil-based coatings, and you can get moisture underneath or you could get trapped gases. Trapped gases are old coatings like linseed oil, varnish, log oil. And what happens is on the south and the southwestern exposed elevations, the film heats up, and it causes this to turn into a gas, and it gets trapped underneath and causes a bubble. And the way to remedy that is you have to scrape it down to the bare wood and strip that area.
