Comparative Summary

Plumbing companies are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves from their competition, and those that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award are already several steps ahead. In addition to its Diamond Certified status, Shepherd’s Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. sets itself apart by taking on challenging jobs that other companies prefer to avoid. “We’ve had clients who hired five or six companies that were unable to fix their problems, and we were able to come up with creative solutions for them,” says President Bill Shepherd. “We take special pride in our ability to restore the plumbing in old homes, repair complicated plumbing systems and deal with high-demand HVAC systems.”

Shepherd’s Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning has been providing plumbing and HVAC services for residential clients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties since 2008. The company has the training and equipment to work on everything from plumbing fixtures and gas lines to heating and air conditioning systems, and it’s also qualified to install and repair systems that improve indoor air quality.

Unlike less experienced plumbing contractors that take a “one size fits all” approach to every job in an effort to maximize their workload volume, Shepherd’s Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning listens closely to each customer’s problem and tailors its services to meet their specific needs. “We always put our clients first, and that means giving them all the information they need to make informed decisions rather than assuming we know what they want,” says Mr. Shepherd. “We do what we say we’re going to do, we follow through, we’re responsive, and we stand behind our products and installations.”

Ultimately, Mr. Shepherd sees Shepherd’s Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning’s detail-oriented business practices as its most important attribute. “We consider ourselves artisans, so we never cut corners,” he says. “Our systems look great and work really well, which isn’t always a given in this industry. We’ve had clients tell us they didn’t want to put the sheetrock back on their walls because their plumbing systems were so pretty!”

Industry Info

Know the basics of your plumbing system to ensure its long-term efficiency.

If you know how to fix minor issues with your plumbing, you can avoid paying for preventable repairs and stop bigger problems before they require the help of a professional. Consider the following tips:

  • If you notice low water flow from one of your faucets, check the aerator or mesh screen inside the faucet head. Sediment and rust can clog the holes and block water pressure, so cleaning out the debris should fix the problem.
  • Hair and debris can collect inside shower drains even when you use a hair trap, so make sure you clear them frequently. If you don’t want to use a chemical drain cleaner, try a coat hanger.
  • If your toilet is clogged and about to overflow, remove the top of the tank and raise the rubber float to stop the water flow. If the water doesn’t unclog or drain, twist the knob at the base of the toilet. The water will stop flowing into the tank and give you a chance to clear the clog.
  • Make sure you have ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) switches on all outlets that are located near water. These inexpensive devices can prevent shocks and save lives.
  • If water is leaking from a specific plumbing fixture like a sink or toilet, you can simply turn off that fixture at its supply stop valve instead of shutting off the entire house’s water supply. The supply stop valve is located where the fixture’s water pipe enters the wall (it looks like a chrome, oval-shaped knob).
  • Make sure you use the manufacturer-recommended amount of detergent when washing dishes and doing laundry. If you use too much detergent, your wastewater will hold large amounts of fat, grease and oil when it enters the sewer system, which makes cleaning and treating it more difficult and costly.

If you don’t feel comfortable trying to fix your own plumbing system, call a professional—you can cause even more damage if you don’t know what you’re doing and botch a simple repair. When it comes to hiring a plumbing company, don’t let price be the only factor in your decision. “Doing a plumbing job correctly takes time, and time costs money,” says Bill Shepherd, president of Shepherd’s Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. in San Jose. “If a plumber cuts a lot of corners, the initial cost will be cheaper, but you’ll likely pay much more for repair costs in the future.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will a tankless water heater give me instant hot water?
A: No, it’ll give you endless hot water, but there are limitations. Before you decide to install a tankless water heater, we’ll educate you about how the heater performs and how that’s going to change your routine.

Q: My home takes too long to cool down. Does that mean my air conditioning system isn’t big enough?
A: Home air conditioning systems don’t work like vehicle air conditioners. You can cool down a hot car in just a few minutes, but it takes up to a day to equalize and balance out the temperature in a home. You can’t turn on your air conditioner when you get home from work and expect your home to be cooled off in 30 minutes. We’ll educate you on how to use your air conditioner to maximize its efficiency and your comfort.

Q: Can you identify whether the dripping sound in my walls is a plumbing leak?
A: Yes. Just because there’s a dripping noise in the wall doesn’t mean you have a plumbing leak. Sometimes it’s just the pipes making noise or rubbing up against the wood in the walls. Either way, we’ll identify the sound and fix it.

Q: There’s a pipe outside of my house that drips all the time. Do I have a leak?
A: Sometimes, furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters create condensation during normal operation. It may look like a leaking pipe, but that’s not always the case—it depends on what the pipe is feeding from. We’ll figure that out and let you know if it’s a problem.

Q: Do I need to replace my plumbing system if my water is orange?
A: Not necessarily. Sometimes, orange (rusty) water comes from the water heater and has nothing to do with the plumbing system. We’ll look at your entire plumbing system and help you determine what’s creating the discolored water.

Q: What’s the best thing I can do to maintain my plumbing and HVAC systems?
A: Depending on the type, your plumbing or HVAC system will require maintenance every one to three years. Knowing your maintenance schedule is key. For example, some air filters require replacement every month while others only need to be changed once a year. Maintaining your equipment will save you a lot of money in repair costs down the road.

Q: Is it possible to have zone heating and cooling or plumbing in some areas of my home?
A: Yes, new products allow us to condition smaller areas and zone homes differently. For example, if you only live in two rooms of your home or you live with an elderly or handicapped individual who has special heating or cooling requirements, we can install a system that will maintain comfort in those areas rather than the entire house.

Bill Shepherd: A Plumbing Affinity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — A third-generation plumber, Bill Shepherd was introduced to the trade at an early age and never looked back. “My family has been doing plumbing since the 1930s, starting with my grandpa,” he recounts. “I did my first job when I was six years old, when I helped my dad install a toilet at a neighbor’s house. From that point on, I basically fell in love with plumbing. I really enjoyed working with my hands and just had a natural ability for it.” During his teen years, Bill regularly worked for his father on afternoons, weekends and during summers before coming on full-time after high school. After 10 years of managing the business, Bill bought his father out and became its sole owner.

Today, as owner of Shepherd’s Plumbing Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., Bill says his favorite part of his job is solving tough problems. “I enjoy fixing something that nobody else can. Time and time again, we’re called into customers’ homes to deal with problems that other plumbers haven’t been able to fix. When we provide an effective solution, the customer is very happy, and that’s a great feeling.”

A resident of Sunnyvale (where he lives with his wife, Anna, and their four children), Bill spends his time outside of work on a wide range of active pastimes. “I love my job, but I also love my hobbies,” he says. “I’m a scuba instructor and I teach scuba lessons in Scotts Valley. Most of my family scuba dives as well, so we enjoy doing that as a family. We’re also into fishing, camping, backpacking…basically, if it’s outdoors, we’ve probably done it.” Additionally, Bill and his family regularly engage in charity work through their church, whether locally in their community or in foreign countries.

In regard to his professional career, Bill says his philosophy hinges on two essential values. “When it comes to dealing with customers, we’re all about honesty and integrity. Even if we’re installing something under a house or in the walls where no one is ever going to see it, we still make sure it looks nice and is done properly. Likewise, we’ll never sell customers something they don’t need. If there’s a less expensive solution available, we’ll tell them about it. I believe this approach has helped us build relationships of trust with our customers.”

When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Bill says he’d become more involved in international charity work. “I don’t ever plan on retiring, but if I did, I would probably spend more time going to impoverished countries and helping those in need. I currently do a fair amount of charity work overseas—for example, after the big earthquake in Haiti, we went down there to help with disaster relief. If I had more free time, I’d look for more opportunities like that.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Fruit.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I’d go back to the mid-19th century. I love that time period and the ideals and people associated with it.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: An early bird.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Normandy, Germany, to see the World War II battlefields. I’m a pretty big history buff, so that would be fascinating to see.

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?
A: Driving in the Bay Area.

  • How to Prevent Toilet Problems

SAN JOSE — Even if your toilets work fine 95 percent of the time, problems are bound to arise once in a while. Whether your toilet is running non-stop or clogged and about to overflow, knowing what to do can help you avoid major consequences.

How to stop a running toilet

If your toilet won’t stop running, this typically means the rubber flapper in the tank isn’t forming a proper seal to stop water from exiting. Fortunately, this is easy to address. Remove the lid from the top of the tank and look inside. If the flapper isn’t closed, you can close it manually by pushing it down with your hand. Once it’s closed, you should see the tank begin to fill with water.

In some cases, your toilet may continue to run even after the flapper is fully closed. This usually means the flapper is old and deteriorated, and thus unable to form a proper seal. In this case, you’ll need to replace your flapper with a new one, which can be purchased at your local hardware store. If your toilet continues to run, call a plumber to get a permanent solution.

How to stop an overflowing toilet

If your toilet is clogged and looks like it’s about to overflow, relax—there’s an easy way to avoid this. Reach down to the left side of the toilet and turn off the wall valve by rotating it clockwise until it stops. By shutting off water to your toilet, this will prevent the bowl from overflowing and give you a chance to remove the clog with a plunger or auger. Once the water goes down, turn the valve back on. If you can’t remove the clog or have recurrent issues with clogs, call a plumber to take care of the problem for you.

  • Video: How to Stop an Overflowing Toilet

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your toilet is running—or worse, overflowing—you’ll be glad to know there are easy ways to stop this from happening. Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Bill Shepherd of Shepherd’s Plumbing Heating And Air Conditioning to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Bill Shepherd: So, what I want to talk to you today about is shutting off your toilet, should there be a problem with the toilet running non-stop, or overflowing. If it’s wasting water, or water’s running down the drain and you can’t get that water to stop, there’s two things that you can do. You can either open up the back of the tank and look inside. There’s a rubber flapper or disk that you can push down and make sure it’s sealed to the bottom of the toilet. That should stop the water flowing.

If that still does not stop the water from flowing, and it’s overflowing in the bowl and continuing to run, then you can reach down to the left side of the toilet ─ there’s a valve at the wall. Take that valve and rotate it clockwise. It’s either going to turn 90 degrees and stop, or it’s going to rotate multiple times. Turn that valve until it stops turning and that should shut the water off to the toilet. Then you can call your local plumber and have him come out and repair it.
