Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for solar and roofing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Sierra Roofing & Solar, achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is dependent upon meeting and exceeding the high standards it sets for every job, regardless of the size. “We build strong expectations when we’re making presentations to customers, and I think that’s why a lot of people choose us over other companies,” says President Jeff Basch. “Of course, that means our work has to meet those high expectations, but that’s a challenge we embrace every day.”

Sierra Roofing & Solar has been installing solar panels and replacing, repairing and inspecting roofing systems for residential and commercial clients throughout the East Bay since 1976. The company has access to all major brands and sizes of solar and roofing products, which allows its technicians to quickly handle emergency repairs and ensure every installation job is as seamless and stress-free as possible for the property owner.

Unlike less experienced solar and roofing contractors that only offer minimal warranties in an effort to protect themselves against delivering subpar work, Sierra Roofing & Solar proves its commitment to quality workmanship by backing every installation with a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. “We know there are a lot of ways to cut corners in this industry, but we’re absolutely unwilling to do that,” affirms Mr. Basch. “Our number one goal is to provide top-notch products for every customer, and our 100 percent satisfaction guarantee is a great way to achieve that.”

Another distinguishing feature of Sierra Roofing & Solar is its omnipresent “Safety Seal of Approval,” which it uses throughout every aspect of its services to attest to the professional abilities and integrity of its employees. “Sometimes solar and roofing companies get applications from people who claim to have a lot of experience, but their background checks reveal reasons why they shouldn’t be hired,” explains Mr. Basch. “With our Safety Seal of Approval, potential clients can be assured of three things: all our technicians are drug-free, certifiably trained and have passed a background check prior to being hired.”

Industry Info

Consider the benefits of leasing a solar power system. Until recently, most homeowners had to spend upwards of $30,000 to have solar power systems installed on their properties. While reduced power costs, federal rebates and tax incentives had certain long-term advantages, solar was still only available to those with the financial resources to make a sizeable upfront investment. But another option has emerged in recent years, one that has made solar power affordable for homeowners who don’t have a surplus of cash at their disposal: leasing.

It’s been estimated that nearly half of the solar power systems in use today are leased from a third party. Since the motivation for going solar involves saving money as much as it does saving energy, the big question on most homeowners’ minds is whether leasing is truly a financially worthwhile option. It’s true that leasing companies reap the federal rebates and tax incentives of solar installations, but homeowners are also able to benefit financially because the combined total of reduced power bills and lease payments typically amounts to less than their previous energy bills. With no down payment and system monitoring services provided, solar leasing has become the preferred choice of many homeowners.

In the past, it was common for manufacturers to warranty the components of a solar system individually. For example, a manufacturer might offer a 25-year warranty on the panels but only a 10-year warranty on the inverters. This posed a significant setback for those anticipating a return on their initial investments, as the cost of replacing a single inverter could easily exceed $3,000. Fortunately, many manufacturers will soon be offering a new technology that allows them to build an inverter directly into each panel. These new combination panels (called AC panels) will have the same 25-year warranty as the individual panels do now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you provide quotes over the phone?

A: No. Every solar and roofing project is different, so we really need to see your property in person to provide an accurate estimate.

Q: I’m not comfortable going up on my roof. Can you provide confirmation that my project was done correctly?

A: Absolutely. We’ll take a lot of before-and-after pictures and attach them to the final invoice. That way, you can see not only the finished job, but also the initial problems that we fixed.

Q: Do you offer solar panel maintenance services?

A: We provide annual system inspections, which involves testing the system to make sure it’s performing to its peak potential. Our solar panels are covered by warranties, but if one goes bad, you might not realize it until we test it to look at the power being produced. This service is included in the cost of installation as part of our 10-year warranty, which means we provide the service annually for the next 10 years.

Q: How much money will I actually save by installing a solar system?

A: Before answering that, we have to look at your kilowatt hour usage and do a thorough financial analysis, which will allow us to provide an estimated internal rate of return on your solar power investment. In some cases, the rate of return after taxes can be as high as 15 percent, which surprises a lot of homeowners. Also, we’re now able to offer a solar lease program through the SunPower system, which was previously something only large solar contractors could offer.

Q: Can you provide referrals?

A: Certainly. We have a book filled with addresses, photos, names and numbers of past jobs that we can bring to your initial appointment. Sometimes, all we have to do is take you right down the street—after 35 years, we’ve installed a lot of roofs and solar systems in the local area.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Sean O'Brien

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Sean O’Brien is a 40-year veteran of the roofing industry and general manager of Sierra Roofing & Solar, a Diamond Certified company since 2011. He can be reached at (510) 244-2720 or by email.

Sean O’Brien: Roofing Livelihood

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

DUBLIN — When Sean O’Brien first started roofing as a teenager, it was just a way to make money on the weekends—he never realized it would lead to a lifelong livelihood. “During high school, I had a friend whose dad owned a roofing company, so we got recruited to help out on the weekends,” he remembers. “After graduating, I wanted to get into some aspect of construction, and since I had some experience with roofing, I figured that would be an ‘in.’ So, I walked into the largest union roofing company in Sonoma County, met the owner and somehow convinced him to hire me. To this day, I appreciate him for giving me a chance, because I’ve enjoyed my career in the roofing industry very much.”

Today, as general manager of Sierra Roofing & Solar, Sean says his favorite part of his job is serving customers. “At the heart of it, we’re a service company, and the service side is what I enjoy most. I just like going to customers’ homes and being the guy who can provide the service they need. That’s always been the thing that drives me, and I continue to find it rewarding.”

A lifetime Bay Area resident, Sean says there’s no place he’d rather be. “I spent my younger years in Marin and Sonoma Counties before moving to the East Bay in 2003. After all these years, I still think the Bay Area is the greatest place on earth. The weather, the people, the beaches, the mountains, the redwood trees…I love this place!”

Outside of work, Sean engages in a variety of active pastimes, from sports to family gatherings. “I enjoy playing golf, going to San Francisco Giants games and hanging out with my family,” he says. “Besides my wife, Sharon, and my two grown children, Kevin and Christina, I have a lot of family in the area, including my mom, four sisters and several cousins, so we spend a lot of time together.” However, as much as Sean likes staying active, every so often he likes to just unwind. “Going to the beach is the number one way I like to relax. Now that I live in the East Bay, I go out to Half Moon Bay most weekends to enjoy the serenity of the ocean.”

In his life and career, Sean espouses the importance of maintaining a temperate perspective. “I’ve found it’s always best to consider the long term and not get too caught up in what’s happening in the moment—especially if things aren’t going your way,” he advises. “Instead of getting frustrated by a momentary setback, it’s better to look at the big picture and do the best you can. After all, even if today wasn’t your best day, you get another shot tomorrow morning. The same is true if you’re having a great day—you should take pride in doing well, but you should also keep in mind that tomorrow may not be as successful. Basically, it’s all about keeping an even keel and doing the best you can every day.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Sean says he’d head to the golf course. “If the weather was nice, the first thing I’d do is grab my clubs and play a round of golf while everybody else is at work and the course is empty. In the long term, I hope to do a lot of traveling. My wife is already semi-retired, so we’re starting to look at places we’d like to visit when that time arrives.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: An early bird—I can’t remember the last time I stayed up past 9:30pm.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: Thanksgiving. It’s like Christmas but without all the stress of buying gifts—just good food and good times with family.

Q: Music or talk radio?
A: I like them both. I usually toggle between NPR, sports talk and various music stations.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?
A: My baseball. Give me a glove, a bat, and a ball and I was a happy kid.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Gummy bears.

  • A Program To Maximize Roof Lifespan

DUBLIN — Making the most of a new roof isn’t about paying less for it—at least, not upfront. The fact is, by investing in quality at the outset, you’re more likely to save money in the long term than you are by going cheap with materials and construction. However, investing in a quality product isn’t the only part of maximizing your roof’s lifespan and performance: you also need to invest in ongoing care.

Even if you’ve purchased a high-quality roof, the worst thing you can do is ignore it after the fact. Imagine you bought a new car—after purchasing, it would be a mistake to keep driving it and never have it looked at by a professional. You’d also want to keep it maintained with regular oil changes, tire rotations and other important services. When it comes to your roof, periodic inspections are equally important to make sure it’s performing as it should be. Otherwise, you won’t know what condition it’s in or what kinds of issues might have emerged due to harsh weather and other factors.

The best way to keep tabs on your roof is to enroll in a roof maintenance program with a local roofing contractor. A roof maintenance program ensures your roof is visually inspected on a recurrent basis and any issues are dealt with preemptively, rather than after damage has occurred. This will enable you to maximize your roof’s performance and overall lifespan.

  • Video: The Value of a Roof Maintenance Program

    Complete Video Transcription

DUBLIN — Host, Sarah Rutan: After having a new roof installed on your home, consider protecting your investment with a proactive maintenance program. Today we’re in Dublin with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Sean O’Brien of Sierra Roofing & Solar to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Sean O’Brien: One of the questions we get asked a lot is: after I’ve had my new roof installed, is there anything I need to do from that point on? One of the things we like to talk about is the need for a roof maintenance program. Even though you’ve had a new roof installed, we don’t know what happens during the course of the winter, and having us come out and do a visual inspection is a good idea to make sure nothing has happened over the course of the year. It’s kind of like putting your new tires on your car. You’ve put a few miles on it. You want to rotate them and take good care of them; make sure they’re performing the way they’re supposed to be performing.

I would definitely recommend them. They are local. I have used other roofers and this is the first one that I was very pleased with.

They came out on time, they put in an honest day's work, and they photographed the work. They explained what the problems were, and they showed me that my roof was done very quickly with piece meal and a lot of loose pieces. The people who had put the roof on before left pieces of roof in the gutter, and Sierra Roofing removed everything. They did a super clean job.
