Company Philosophy

“We stay on every job until it's finished, and we never take on work unless we're certain we can deliver excellent results. We guarantee our customers can rely on us before, during and after their projects. Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for construction companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Sigura Construction, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: set high expectations for every job, regardless of its size. “We’re all about quality workmanship, and we always let our clients know what they can expect from us,” says owner Ilan Sigura. “Our reputation is very important to us, and we’ve built that reputation by taking care of every client and providing them with the results they expect.”

Sigura Construction has been remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, building room additions, and handling ground-up construction projects throughout the Greater Bay Area for more than two decades. Mr. Sigura says the company’s full-service approach to the construction process allows it to guarantee a convenient, streamlined experience for each client. “Every project is an opportunity to design something that’s highly functional, aesthetically appealing, and tailored to the individual client’s needs and desires.”

Unlike less experienced construction firms that take a hands-off approach to interacting with their customers, Sigura Construction prioritizes regular communication before, during and after its clients’ projects. “It’s important for us to know that our clients are satisfied with every phase of our work,” affirms Mr. Sigura. “Our foremen are always available by phone or in person to address their questions or concerns, and we conduct a post-job survey to confirm that our work has met their expectations.”

Another distinguishing feature of Sigura Construction is its large staff, which allows it to maintain high levels of quality throughout its projects. “From the superintendent who coordinates the job to the production manager to the technicians who perform the work, everyone here works together to make sure nothing falls through the cracks,” says Mr. Sigura. “Also, I’m personally involved with every project, which adds yet another level of accountability and guarantees the client gets their money’s worth.”

Industry Info

If you’re planning a construction project, look for a contracting firm that cultivates a culture of accountability. Construction companies run the gamut from tried and true to completely unreliable. Even the best contractors can earn a poor reputation if they don’t finish jobs on time or are unable to keep promises, but a record of responsible and responsive actions can earn good companies stellar reputations for taking care of their clients.

To find a construction company that offers quality craftsmanship along with good customer service, experts recommend looking at finished products and considering the route a company takes to get results. Ilan Sigura, owner of Sigura Construction, Inc. in Santa Clara, says it’s a good idea to find a company that has multiple levels of supervision. “Look for a firm that has a superintendent who is responsible for coordinating the job and a production manager who handles quality. A multi-level approach provides independent checks of jobs and greater accountability for crews. Also, there are more responsible parties with whom you can communicate and get information.”

Many construction companies find they get better results by keeping crews on jobs rather than pulling employees from one job to work on another. To ensure continuity and personal responsibility, look for a contractor who promises to start and finish your job without breaks in the middle and who sends the same crew to your house every day.

It’s also smart to hire a company that has present and active leadership from its ownership and managerial staff, as this can be a sign of a culture of accountability. When owners are present on jobsites, employees often feel positive pressure to perform at higher levels, which Mr. Sigura says can lead to better results. “More accountability for employees means their clients get their money’s worth.”

Here are some other signs that a construction company is committed to accountability:

  • Every employee has a job to do and knows what is expected of them.
  • Owners and foremen delegate responsibilities to qualified staff members.
  • Every step of a job is tracked to monitor progress.
  • Systems are in place to verify clients are happy during and after their jobs.
  • There is accountability for individual employees and crews.
  • You receive detailed project proposals and schedules outlining the phases of your project.
  • There are avenues for you to communicate easily with crews, foremen and company owners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start my project?

A: It depends on the type of work, the size of the job and the time of year. We always try to accommodate our clients, but we’ll never rush a project just to fit in another job. We’ll give you a starting date for your project during the estimate phase.

Q: When you start my project, will you work continuously until it’s finished?

A: Absolutely. Our dedicated crew members see every project through to completion without jumping from job to job. Some of our employees provide specialty services like plumbing and electrical work, and they’ll move from project to project as their specialty is needed, but our superintendent and technicians will stay on your project until it’s finished.

Q: Will you work with my budget?

A: Yes. We’ll give you options for materials and do whatever it takes to complete your project within your budget.

Q: Will you take care of the permit process?

A: Yes. We’re a one-stop shop, which means we take care of everything from beginning to end, including obtaining any necessary permits.

Q: Do you guarantee your work?

A: Absolutely. We provide a one-year warranty on our workmanship and other specific warranties depending on the type of work and materials involved. We also use high-quality materials that are covered by manufacturers’ warranties for additional protection.

Q: Can you work on my house if it’s raining?

A: In most cases, yes. It depends on the weather and type of work we’re doing, but we can usually cover any open areas to keep out rain and continue working.

Q: Can I live in my house while it’s being remodeled?

A: It depends on the size of your remodeling project. Some projects will allow you to stay at home, but others are too disruptive. If we can guarantee your safety, you can stay in your home, but if we feel the jobsite isn’t safe for you, we’ll recommend staying somewhere else while work is underway.

Q: Do you keep a clean jobsite?

A: Yes. While we’re working, we put up plastic framing and plastic walls with viscose, which allows our workers to go in and out while protecting the rest of the house from construction dust. Also, we mask off certain areas with plastic and tape, organize and store any tools, remove excess materials, and clean up at the end of each workday.

Q: Can you help me with design ideas?

A: Absolutely. Our in-house interior designers can help you by using computer simulations and 3-D rendering. We have special software that combines four different platforms to make our renderings look highly realistic.

Q: Can you work with my architect?

A: Yes. We’ll meet with you and your architect to make sure the features you’re planning won’t make your project go over budget. We’ll also meet with your architect onsite during the project to make sure everything is going according to plan.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Ilan Sigura

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Ilan Sigura is a lifetime veteran of the construction industry and CEO of Sigura Construction, Inc. a Diamond Certified company since 2007. He can be reached at (408) 372-8945 or by email.

Ilan Sigura: An Integral Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA CLARA — By the time he reached early adulthood, Ilan Sigura had already established deep roots in the construction industry. Even when he tried his hand at a new profession, it wasn’t long before he returned to the field that had become an integral part of his identity. “My father was a contractor, and he began teaching me the trade when I was just a boy,” he explains. “Later, as a college student, I decided to study computer science. After I graduated, I spent a couple of months engineering software for a tech company, but I didn’t like it at all. I felt insignificant working at a large company and my work had no direct impact on the lives of others. This was a stark contrast from construction, where I got to interact with people and see the results of my work firsthand. Ultimately, I decided to go back to doing what I knew best.”

Today, as owner of Sigura Construction, Inc., Ilan says his favorite part of his job is the pride he takes in his company’s reputation. “Between my production team, my estimators and my guys in the field, I run a fairly large operation. As we continue to receive high customer satisfaction ratings, it’s an indication that we’re doing very well, which I find very satisfying.”

Originally from Israel, Ilan came to the United States in 1990 to attend college in New Jersey. “My plan was to return home and run my father’s business after graduating, but as it turned out, I fell in love with this country and never went back.” After migrating to the Bay Area for what was to be a brief stint in the tech field, Ilan settled in Sunnyvale, where he now lives with his wife, Rinat, and their five children. When asked his favorite part about living in the Bay Area, he expresses his appreciation of the diverse local landscape. “I like being outdoors, and there are lots of opportunities for that here. With so much to explore and so much variety, it never gets boring.”

Outside of work, Ilan spends the bulk of his time with his family. “My wife and I believe in giving our kids skills so they can grow up to be confident and independent,” he says. “We like taking them camping and sightseeing, as well as doing activities like riding quads and jet skiing.” Additionally, Ilan extends his passion for construction to his home environment. “I do a lot of home improvement projects, which keeps me working with my hands and helps me stay in touch with my trade.”

In his life and career, Ilan says he never forgets to consider the impact of his work on future generations. “As a professional, I believe in doing things honestly and with integrity—not only because what goes around comes around, but because we need to leave a good place for our children to inherit. That’s why my team and I make an effort to implement eco-friendly measures in our work whenever possible. With everything we do, we want to make sure we’re doing right by the planet and the people who inhabit it.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Ilan says it’s a doubtful scenario. “I don’t think I’ll ever retire—I’ll always want to work. But if I did retire, I’d spend more time with my wife and kids. After all, they’re the most important things to me.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite season?
A: Summer—I come from a warm country, so I like the heat.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: The past, just because things used to be simpler and more innocent back when I was growing up.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Snickers bars.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: Both. I usually get about four hours of sleep each night.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Satsuma Sushi in Mountain View.

  • Crucial Aspects of Green Building

SANTA CLARA – When it comes to designing and executing a remodeling project, one of the most important considerations is energy conservation. Building codes require a certain level of energy efficiency, but there are many opportunities to go above and beyond these basic standards to maximize energy conservation in your living space.

    Insulation
By keeping the heat in and the cold out, insulation is a crucial part of maintaining an energy-efficient home. There are a few different types of insulation, all of which entail varying costs and levels of performance. For example, having fiberglass batt insulation in your walls and attic satisfies local building codes and provides a reasonable level of insulation. However, further measures such as sealing your attic with spray-on foam insulation can provide substantial savings both in terms of energy usage and heating/cooling costs. Another important aspect of home insulation is replacing old, inefficient windows with modern double-pane windows. After all, even if you put a lot of insulation in your walls and ceiling, poorly insulated windows will compromise these measures.

    HVAC systems
When it comes to HVAC technology, there are a lot of high-efficiency products on the market that maximize energy conservation and keep operating costs low. Additionally, a high-efficiency HVAC system will give you better climate control and keep the temperature more stable throughout the day.

    Water conservation
Besides energy conservation, another major focus of today’s Green technology is water conservation. For example, cutting-edge appliances like tankless water heaters and hot water recirculation pumps help minimize the amount of water that’s wasted down the drain, and graywater systems collect lightly used water from sinks, showers, and washing machines so it can be reused for lawns and plants.

    Solar
Another way homeowners are boosting the energy efficiency of their homes is by installing solar energy systems. Most people know that solar systems can save a bundle on energy costs; in some cases, homeowners are actually able to create more energy than they use, which they can then sell to their utility companies. As long as your home gets an adequate amount of sunshine, you simply can’t lose by adding solar panels to your property.

  • Video: Conservation Measures in Construction

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA CLARA – Host, Sarah Rutan: When building or remodeling a home, there are several ways to boost energy-efficiency and reduce your carbon footprint. Today we’re in Santa Clara with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ilan Sigura of Sigura Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ilan Sigura: When designing and executing a project we talk to our clients about energy conservation. For example, insulation. When we talk about insulation we talk about the different types of insulation, the cost of the insulation, and the savings in operating costs. For example, batt insulation will be something that is up to code. However, if we use foam or spray-on insulation we can save money to our clients all in all in the long run for the operation costs of heating and cooling the house in the winter and in the summer.

Also we talk about HVAC systems. We are always recommending our clients to work on high efficiency products to make sure that the energy conservation is in place and making sure that the costs are low, of operation. Also when you use HVAC high efficiency you have a much better ability to have a better climate control and not to have big differences in temperature in the house, but have something that is more controllable.

Also when we talk about green technology we talk to our clients about greywater, such as collecting all the water in tanks in the winter from the garden system, and from the house, as well as watering all the lawn and all the flowers during the summer time. So that helps on actually water consumption. Also when we talk about green technologies to our clients we talk about tankless water heaters and solar panels. So if we talk to them about tankless water heaters we are showing them how they save money financially over time and how they have constantly hot water without having to finish the hot water that’s in the regular tank and then wait for it to get warmed up, or et cetera, et cetera.  But have constant hot water, well, you’re actually paying for the usage of warming up the water as you go, versus also heating up the whole tank.

When we talk about the solar panels we talk about explaining to our customers and showing them, by statistics and all the appropriate media, how they save money in energy. And how they actually can — Sometimes they’ll have a very, very low bill, or even maybe sell some of the energy to PG&E or to the local electrical company. This is our tip for the day and thank you very much.
