Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Sigura Pro Painting, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: set high expectations on every painting project, regardless of its size. “Quality workmanship is what we’re all about, and our clients know that’s what they can expect from us,” says owner Ilan Sigura. “We’ve built a positive reputation by taking care of our clients and providing them with the results they’re looking for.”

Sigura Pro Painting has been providing interior and exterior painting services throughout the Greater Bay Area for more than two decades. The company takes a full-service approach to the painting process in order to guarantee a streamlined experience for each client, and it also has the training and equipment to offer staining, refinishing, and color consultation services.

Unlike less experienced painting contractors that take a hands-off approach to interacting with their customers, Sigura Pro Painting focuses on communicating with its clients before, during and after their projects. “Ultimately, we want our clients to be satisfied with every phase of our work, and clear communication is the best way to confirm we’re achieving that goal,” says Mr. Sigura. “We’re always available to address questions or concerns, and we conduct a survey after every job to confirm we’ve met the client’s expectations.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Sigura Pro Painting is its comprehensive approach to quality control, which includes providing each project with a superintendent who is responsible for jobsite coordination and a production manager who oversees quality. “By having multiple levels of supervision, we’re able to ensure nothing falls through the cracks,” explains Mr. Sigura. “Also, I personally oversee every project, which adds yet another level of accountability and guarantees the client gets their money’s worth.”

Industry Info

If you’re planning a painting project, make sure you set a realistic budget and stick to it. Budgets are hard to live by, but they can be especially difficult to stick to when it comes to upgrading or renovating your home. One thing spirals into another until you have a beautiful home and a bare bank account. Luckily, when it comes to house painting, you can increase your chances of setting a realistic budget and sticking to it.

First, think about your project and write down your needs and wants. This will prevent you from contracting for more than you need. Evaluating what you really need instead of what you want will allow you to prioritize, which means you can add to a project that’s under budget and remove unnecessary items from an over-budget project.

Most painting contractors charge either a flat rate or a variable price for time and materials. Be honest with your painter. Tell them how much you want to spend and find out if it’s reasonable, but never sacrifice quality for price. Even if you have to put a halt to the project to save more money, that’s better than hiring an unlicensed or uninsured painter to do the work.

Many painters will work with you to choose paint brands and other materials that make sense for your budget. Ilan Sigura, owner of Sigura Pro Painting in Santa Clara, says good painting contractors are able to work with any client and their unique budgetary needs. “Your painter should give you options for materials that are high-quality and take cost into account. They should do whatever it takes to get the job done right and still meet your needs.”

Remember, time is money when it comes to hiring a painting contractor. Anything you can do to simplify or shorten the job should save you money and prevent you from going over budget. For example, if you take down art and remove furniture from the rooms that are being painted, you’ll save your painters time and keep their services within your budget.

The timing of your job can also impact the cost. Some contractors set higher fees for peak times and offer discounts to clients who book jobs during the off-season. It’s also smart to stay in constant contact with your painter. Ask them to let you know about potential overage fees or things you can do to help the job stay on budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start my painting project?

A: It depends on the type of work, the size of the job and the time of year. We always try to accommodate our clients, but we won’t rush a project just to fit in another job.

Q: When you start my project, will you work continuously until it’s finished?

A: Absolutely. Our dedicated crew members see every project through to completion without jumping from job to job.

Q: Is it necessary to strip my old paint or prime my walls before painting?

A: If a wall is already painted and the paint has good integrity, we don’t need to apply primer. For an exterior job, we’ll power wash the surface to clean the existing paint, seal cracks with caulking and repair any damaged areas before applying new paint. Only exposed areas need to be primed. If the paint is peeling or flaking, we’ll scrape it, sand it and apply primer so the paint lasts longer.

Q: Are you certified to remove lead-based paint?

A: Yes, we’re an EPA Lead-Safe Certified company. We’re trained to perform asbestos and lead testing in homes that were built before 1978.

Q: Can you paint over my wallpaper?

A: We don’t recommend it. If you paint over wallpaper, the moisture from the paint can penetrate the wallpaper and cause it to peel. Instead, we’ll remove the wallpaper and any glue that’s on the wall before priming and painting over the surface.

Q: Can you repaint my cabinets?

A: Yes, we use water- and alcohol-based paints to paint cabinets. If we’re using alcohol-based paint, we wear masks and use HEPA filters so we don’t contaminate the home with fumes.

Q: What type of paint should I choose if I’m concerned about keeping it clean?

A: The easiest paints to keep clean are semi-gloss and satin sheen—you can just use a sponge and water or a gentle cleaning agent.

Q: Will you work with my budget?

A: Yes, we’ll give you options for materials and do whatever it takes to complete your project within your budget.

Q: Can you paint my house if it’s raining?

A: In most cases, yes. It depends on the weather and type of painting we’re doing, but we can usually cover open areas to keep out rain and continue working.

Q: Will you take care of the permit process?

A: Yes. We’re a one-stop shop, which means we take care of everything from beginning to end, including obtaining any necessary permits.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Ilan Sigura

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Ilan Sigura is a lifetime veteran of the construction industry and CEO of Sigura Pro Painting, a Diamond Certified company since 2007. He can be reached at (408) 372-8945 or by email.

Ilan Sigura: An Integral Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA CLARA — By the time he reached early adulthood, Ilan Sigura had already established deep roots in the construction industry. Even when he tried his hand at a new profession, it wasn’t long before he returned to the field that had become an integral part of his identity. “My father was a contractor, and he began teaching me the trade when I was just a boy,” he explains. “Later, as a college student, I decided to study computer science. After I graduated, I spent a couple of months engineering software for a tech company, but I didn’t like it at all. I felt insignificant working at a large company and my work had no direct impact on the lives of others. This was a stark contrast from construction, where I got to interact with people and see the results of my work firsthand. Ultimately, I decided to go back to doing what I knew best.”

Today, as owner of Sigura Pro Painting, Ilan says his favorite part of his job is the pride he takes in his company’s reputation. “Between my production team, my estimators and my guys in the field, I run a fairly large operation. As we continue to receive high customer satisfaction ratings, it’s an indication that we’re doing very well, which I find very satisfying.”

Originally from Israel, Ilan came to the United States in 1990 to attend college in New Jersey. “My plan was to return home and run my father’s business after graduating, but as it turned out, I fell in love with this country and never went back.” After migrating to the Bay Area for what was to be a brief stint in the tech field, Ilan settled in Sunnyvale, where he now lives with his wife, Rinat, and their five children. When asked his favorite part about living in the Bay Area, he expresses his appreciation of the diverse local landscape. “I like being outdoors, and there are lots of opportunities for that here. With so much to explore and so much variety, it never gets boring.”

Outside of work, Ilan spends the bulk of his time with his family. “My wife and I believe in giving our kids skills so they can grow up to be confident and independent,” he says. “We like taking them camping and sightseeing, as well as doing activities like riding quads and jet skiing.” Additionally, Ilan extends his passion for construction to his home environment. “I do a lot of home improvement projects, which keeps me working with my hands and helps me stay in touch with my trade.”

In his life and career, Ilan says he never forgets to consider the impact of his work on future generations. “As a professional, I believe in doing things honestly and with integrity—not only because what goes around comes around, but because we need to leave a good place for our children to inherit. That’s why my team and I make an effort to implement eco-friendly measures in our work whenever possible. With everything we do, we want to make sure we’re doing right by the planet and the people who inhabit it.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Ilan says it’s a doubtful scenario. “I don’t think I’ll ever retire—I’ll always want to work. But if I did retire, I’d spend more time with my wife and kids. After all, they’re the most important things to me.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite season?
A: Summer—I come from a warm country, so I like the heat.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: The past, just because things used to be simpler and more innocent back when I was growing up.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Snickers bars.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: Both. I usually get about four hours of sleep each night.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Satsuma Sushi in Mountain View.

  • Options for Addressing a Lead Paint Hazard

SANTA CLARA — Everyone knows lead paint represents a health hazard, but many homeowners are unsure of the specific circumstances under which it’s a concern. In general, if your home was built or painted before 1978 (when lead paint was officially banned), it’s best to err on the side of safety and have your existing paint tested before repainting.

If you discover lead in your home’s paint, there are a couple of ways to address it. One good option is called encapsulation, where a special coating is applied over the existing paint surface before the new paint is applied. By sealing in the lead, encapsulation provides a practical, non-invasive means for preventing exposure. Keep in mind that encapsulation should always be performed by an experienced, lead-safe certified painting contractor.

Another possible solution for dealing with lead paint is to have it physically removed from the environment, a task that should always be handled by a lead remediation professional. Using a rigorous safety protocol (including setting up a sealed work area), remediation specialists will perform a complete demolition, removal and cleaning, leaving your home a lead-free environment.

  • How to Prevent Dry Rot

SANTA CLARA — Dry rot can result from a variety of factors, but the most common is neglected maintenance. Many homeowners fail to maintain the paint and coatings on exterior wood components like siding, trim, and decks. When these components aren’t properly sealed, it leaves them exposed to moisture, which, if able to penetrate the wood, will often develop into dry rot. If allowed to develop unchecked over a long period of time, dry rot can cause substantial damage that requires repair and/or replacement of the affected wood components.

The best way to prevent this is to be diligent about maintenance like touching up paint and recoating. Paint should be touched up every five years, and decks should be resealed every two to three years. By investing time and money into maintaining your home’s wood components, you’ll extend their lifespan and avoid the need for expensive repairs, which will save you money in the long run.

  • Video: How to Prevent Dry Rot

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA CLARA — Host, Sarah Rutan: While dry rot can occur from a variety of circumstances, the majority of instances are fully preventable. Today we’re in Santa Clara with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ilan Sigura of Sigura Pro Painting to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ilan Sigura: There are a few reasons for dry rot. There are reasons of maintenance, and reasons of failure in installation. Maintenance is the biggest issue. A lot of people try to save some money on maintenance such as painting or deck coating or deck sealant, and don’t paint as often in the house or the siding, the trim. And what happens is that when wood is not painted it’s exposed to the elements such as heat, cold, water, et cetera. When the wood is exposed to heat and cold, it expands and contracts and create – let’s call it like cracks.

So, when water goes in between the cracks it causes for the wood to be soft and over time to dry rot. If we are painting the wood very frequently, every five to six years, which is recommended by manufacturer, then at that point we are preventing and prolonging the dry rot to occur in the wood. If people will take the time and the budget to maintain the house and the decks, the house will last longer, the siding will last longer, the deck will last longer, and eventually it will save a lot of money in major repairs.

  • Video: Addressing Lead Paint Concerns

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA CLARA — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you discover that your home contains lead paint, you’ll need to take the appropriate steps to address it safely and effectively. Today we’re in Santa Clara with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ilan Sigura of Sigura Pro Painting to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ilan Sigura: Ilan Sigura, CEO of Sigura Pro Painting. I would like to talk today about lead paint. Many of our customers are asking us, “When should I be concerned with lead paint?” In general, rule of thumb, any building that was painted before 1978, people should really check the paint for lead and see if there’s any lead in the pain. In case and you have lead in your paint, there are many different remedies for it.

Number one is encapsulation. Encapsulation means that you can have a certified contractor who is certified to deal with lead to have a special layer of paint on top of the existing one in order to encapsulate the lead so it’s not exposed anymore to the surface. And then your painter can come and paint on top of it. The other possibility is to get a company that do remediation that will shred the lead with a controlled environment. So, before you paint your home and if your house is before 1978, I would encourage you to inspect for lead.
