Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for house cleaning companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. SonoMarin Cleaning Services, Inc. emphasizes the importance of customer satisfaction in every aspect of its operations, from its training methods to the way it follows up with clients. “For us, customer satisfaction is a way of life,” confirms owner Stanley Costa. “Everyone who works here understands the importance of making each client happy. Our crews are rewarded for doing exactly what our customers want.”

SonoMarin Cleaning Services cleans all types of residential and commercial properties in San Francisco, Marin and Sonoma Counties. The company handles everything from carpet and window cleaning to power washing, and it uses hospital-grade vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters to ensure the cleanest, healthiest environments possible. “Our vacuums remove dust, pollutants and allergens instead of just spreading them around,” explains Mr. Costa. “They’re much more effective than regular vacuum cleaners.”

Unlike cleaning companies that send a different crew to a client’s house for every new cleaning project, SonoMarin Cleaning Services keeps the same team working for each customer, which allows the cleaners to gain valuable experience with the particular needs of the client. “We create a written profile for every customer and give it to the crew before they start cleaning to ensure they know exactly what to do,” says Mr. Costa. “Also, each team includes an onsite supervisor, so there’s a point of contact at all times.”

Another distinguishing feature of SonoMarin Cleaning Services is its use of environmentally-friendly cleaning methods and products, including those made by industry leader Ecolab. “All the products we use are thoroughly tested, biodegradable and safe to be around,” says Mr. Costa. “Our staff members are meticulously trained on the minimum use of these cleaning products to further protect the environment.”

Industry Info

To limit your exposure to household dust, make sure you use the proper cleaning methods. Often, normal housekeeping isn’t enough to permanently remove dust allergens from a house. Many of the substances that make up dust can’t be removed by normal cleaning procedures, and vigorous cleaning methods can actually release more dust into the air, worsening the symptoms of those with dust allergies. To eliminate dust from your home as effectively as possible, consider the following tips:

• Use a vacuum cleaner with a high efficiency filter. Some top brands are Nilfisk, Fantom, Miele and Euroclean.

• Consider purchasing an electrostatically charged cleaning cloth or mop—they attract and hold dust to keep it from becoming airborne. Don’t forget to clean bed springs, windowsills, Venetian blinds and areas underneath furniture. You can also use a damp mop on floors and walls to reduce dust levels.

• Remove as many dust producing and catching items from your home as possible. Instead of carpet, consider installing tile, linoleum or hardwood floors. Select closed book cases and curio cabinets instead of open shelves.

• Encase mattresses, box springs and pillows in impermeable, zippered covers. There are also breathable fabrics that allow water vapor to pass through for added comfort.

• Install a high performance filter in your central air system to remove more than 90 percent of airborne dust. These washable filters shouldn’t contain any materials with glue on them. Check with the manufacturer before making a purchase.

• Use wooden, glass or plastic furniture instead of upholstered items. Antiques often contain high amounts of dust.

• Install washable curtains or window shades instead of Venetian blinds and heavy draperies.

• Wear a mask while you clean to reduce your exposure to airborne dust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do you charge?

A: We charge in increments of 15 minutes. We’ll either work until we complete the agreed-upon tasks or until we reach the number of agreed-upon hours. We don’t charge flat rates based on square footage or other arbitrary formulas. If you pay for an hour of cleaning, you get an hour. All our vehicles are equipped with GPS, so we can verify exactly how long our crew stayed at your site.

Q: Do I have to provide any equipment or supplies?

A: No, we’ll bring everything we need. In addition to our hospital-grade vacuum cleaners, sanitized microfibers and rags, approved cleaning products, and other supplies, we use steamers for surfaces that require it, and we can also supply our own ladders.

Q: Do you reuse rags?

A: Yes, but only after they’ve been cleaned and sterilized. Once a rag is used to clean a surface, we don’t use it again. Unlike some cleaning companies, we’ll never use the same rag in the kitchen and the bathroom, for example, nor will we ever use the same rag from one house to the next.

Q: Are your employees trustworthy?

A: Yes. Our turnover is very low and most of our crew members have been working for us for five to seven years. We know and trust all of them. We pay our employees well and they have opportunities to earn monthly bonuses for quality work, so they stick with us with a sense of ownership and active participation in our principles.

Stanley Costa: From Brazil to the Bay

By Matt Solis, Editor

PETALUMA – The cultural diversity and temperate weather of the Bay Area make it one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, but when Stanley Costa first arrived from his native Brazil more than 20 years ago, it didn’t take long for Northern California to become more than just a nice place to visit. “I was born in Manaus, which is the capital of Amazonas, and I came to the U.S. in 1990 after graduating from college in Sao Paulo,” he explains. “I went to work for a company in Manchester, Massachusetts, but it was too cold for me! I was about to go back to Brazil, and my friend who was living in San Rafael asked me to come visit first. He actually got me a job, and even though I didn’t have a proper work visa, the company sponsored me and I decided to stay. The weather had a big impact on me. The mountains, the oceans—I fell in love with all of it. I thought I could bring my fiancée here and if she liked it, we could make a living. And that’s exactly what happened.”

Stanley started his professional career in telecommunications, and he enjoyed many years of success before certain events forced him to reconsider his life’s path. “In 2001, I was working for a telecommunications company and we hosted a meeting in Boston…on September 11,” he remembers. “That was a nightmare in many ways, and it took seven days just to get back home. Once I was home and started thinking about it, I realized I didn’t want to travel anymore. My wife was pregnant at the time and I just didn’t want to be away from her so much, so I talked to the company and they agreed to let me go along with 400 people during the small recession that occurred after 9/11/2001.”

Stanley used the severance pay he gained for 12 years of loyal service to revamp his wife’s business: a small house cleaning company with a strong clientele base that would henceforth be known as SonoMarin Cleaning Services. “My wife started the business in 1991, and even though I always participated in the decision-making process, it wasn’t until we restarted the company in 2002 that we began focusing on growing and moving in a more professional direction,” he says. “Our goal was to combine the same high level of quality that my wife had always provided with the skills I developed from years of working in the high-tech and telecommunications industries. After only one year, we had enough customers to pay off the initial investment we made to improve the company.”

Quality service has always been important to Stanley and his wife, and even though recent economic conditions have affected the house cleaning industry in terms of the public’s willingness to pay top dollar, SonoMarin Cleaning Services is still guided by the same philosophies upon which it was founded. “Even when the economy took a big hit in 2006, we never shied away from being a company focused on quality,” affirms Stanley. “We refocused and started making improvements to our internal procedures. I have an MBA in technology management, so I used that knowledge to completely revamp our IT and automate our scheduling system. Those things have been important for maintaining the level of quality our customers have come to expect.”

Stanley considers himself a technophile in all aspects of his life, but even though he spends much of his free time enjoying his home theater system and thinking of new ways to optimize SonoMarin Cleaning Services’ technological support, he still makes time for more traditional activities with his family. “My daughter is 11 and loves to ride bikes, so I try to go biking with her every weekend,” he says. “For the most part, though, I’m a technology-oriented person. Some people tease me for it, but that’s what I’m passionate about.”

Ultimately, Stanley and his wife strive to run their business the same way they live their lives—by working hard and approaching everything they do with honesty. “Whenever I hire someone, I tell them two things: do your best and always tell the truth,” he says. “I believe honest, hard work is the key to success, and all our employees share the same values.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What country would you most like to visit and why?
A: I’m currently planning to visit Europe, actually. My family immigrated to Brazil from Spain, Portugal and England, so I’m looking forward to seeing those countries.

Q: What’s your favorite sport?
A: I’m a soccer fan, but I’m not a fanatic. I’ve been learning to appreciate American sports with my daughter. Since I wasn’t born and raised here, the sports culture has never really appealed to me, but nowadays I find myself watching American football on TV and trying to follow.

Q: What’s your favorite band/musician?
A: My favorite bands are The Rolling Stones, The Eagles and The Beatles. For contemporary music, Maroon 5 is one of my favorites. I also go back to classical music like Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban. I like music in general. If it’s good, I’ll listen.

Q: Do you have a favorite restaurant?
A: For seafood, I like McCormick & Kuleto’s in San Francisco. There’s a small Italian restaurant by the Marin Civic Center called La Toscana that I like very much. In Sonoma County, there’s a sushi restaurant in Petaluma called Fuji that’s excellent. I tend to like restaurants that are family-owned because they keep the food the same.

Q: Dogs or cats?
A: Dogs. I have nothing against cats, but I love dogs. We have a five-year-old Miniature Schnauzer named James. He’s a smart little guy; I talk to him and I swear he understands me.

  • How to Clean Your House

PETALUMA — Many people don’t realize that using a specific methodology to clean their homes will make the whole process easier and ensure better results. Picture yourself in a two-story house—you might wake up one day and be inspired to clean the whole thing by yourself, but how do you know where to start? Here are some tips for implementing a plan that will give you the best results:

Start cleaning on the top floor and work your way down. If you do it the other way around, the bottom part of the house will get dusty after you’ve already spent time cleaning it, as dust from the top floor will float and settle on the bottom floor.

Prioritize work in each room. If there are cobwebs in a bedroom, for example, remove them first before cleaning the floor so you don’t have to redo your work. Choose a corner of the room and clean either clockwise or counterclockwise so you don’t forget anything.

Steam clean your refrigerator. A lot of people have been discovering the benefits of steam cleaning their refrigerators in recent years. Steam cleaners are available pretty much anywhere, and even a small device will do a great job. When you use steam to clean the inside of a refrigerator, you can avoid using general cleaners altogether, which is good because those products contain chemicals that can contaminate your food. Also, if you buy a small steamer, you can use if for other purposes. When your garbage disposal starts to smell, for example, use the steamer to kill the bacteria in the sink without chemicals.

  • Video: Adopting a Cleaning Methodology

    Complete Video Transcription

PETALUMA — Host, Sarah Rutan: When cleaning your house, having a methodology is the best approach. Today we’re with Diamond Certified expert contributor Stanley Costa of SonoMarin Cleaning Services to learn what he recommends.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Stanley Costa: All right, so today I would like to introduce you to a few tips on how to clean your house. You know its one of those things that people do not realize but if you use a methodology that makes their life a lot easier and the results much better.

Let’s say you have a two-story home and you want to clean the home by yourself, always start from the top. The top level first and then the bottom. If you do it the other way around, what’s going to happen is the bottom part of the house will be dusty and you don’t know why but you clean the bottom and then clean the top and everything that is up there will come down. You see gravity in this case is not your friend.

As you go to each room, what you need to do is also follow a methodology. You see, if you wanted to make sure the cobwebs are down, you want to take them down with a little brush or what have you, do that first. Don’t clean the floor first, leave that for last. You clean that and then you also choose a corner of the room and then you have follow clockwise or counter clockwise as you clean it so you don’t forget anything. See, it’s very, very simple. I know you say probably not that simple but trust me, follow a methodology and the results will be much better and more enjoyable.

So, when it’s time to clean your refrigerator, what’s the best way do it? A lot of people understand and discovered benefits of steaming and it’s available anywhere pretty much. You can buy a small device that will do the job. If you steam inside, you avoid the chemicals that are in these general cleaners to go into your vegetables. Imagine a closed environment, you should always avoid a chemical that is in there lingering with your vegetables and your meats.

The steamer that you buy you are not going to use just for refrigerators, you can use it around the house. I’ll give you one example: when your garbage disposal starts to smell a little bit you can definitely use that as well because the bacteria and it’s no chemicals involved. Its friendly to the environment. Remember its just water, nothing else involved.

Host, Sarah Rutan:  Thank you to our Diamond Certified expert contributor, Stanley Costa of SonoMarin Cleaning Services. I’m Sarah Rutan.
