Comparative Summary

Maintaining patient satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any health care practice, but it’s even more important for chiropractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Springtown Wellness Center, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of patient satisfaction is simple: take a personalized approach to chiropractic care that ensures every person who visits its facility receives the best possible treatment. “There’s no ‘one size fits all’ treatment when it comes to chiropractic care–every person has different needs that need to be addressed,” says owner Jag Dhesi, D.C. “We never limit ourselves to one type of treatment; rather, we use every available tool to help our patients feel better.”

Springtown Wellness Center has been providing health and wellness services at three locations in Livermore, San Ramon and Fremont since 2000. In addition to offering treatments that range from chiropractic adjustments to massage therapy, the practice performs detoxifying body wraps, teaches patients corrective exercises that allow them to continue their treatments independently, and more.

Unlike less experienced chiropractic practices that use harsh adjustment methods, Springtown Wellness Center prefers to take a holistic approach to patient wellness. “Our adjustments work with the curves of the spine and natural flow of the body,” explains Dr. Dhesi. “We’re never aggressive or rough because we want our patients to feel better after their adjustments, not sore. Each patient gets a customized treatment that’s tailored to their specific needs and goals.”

Springtown Wellness Center further differentiates itself from its competition by offering a wide range of lifestyle improvement services, including customized weight loss protocols and nutritional counseling. “We can help our patients meet their healthy lifestyle goals, whether they want to lose weight or just get their nutritional and physical needs under control,” says Dr. Dhesi. “From supplements to counseling to exercise and stretching regimens, we’re prepared to help in a variety of ways.”

Industry Info

Good chiropractic treatment isn’t limited to backs, necks and spines. Many people mistakenly think chiropractors only provide pain relief and adjustments for the neck, back and spine, but most chiropractors’ expertise runs much deeper than that. “Chiropractic adjustments apply to the entire body, including rib cages, arms, hands, shoulders, wrists and legs,” says Dr. Jag Dhesi, owner of Springtown Wellness Center, which has offices in Livermore, San Ramon and Fremont. “In fact, chiropractic treatments on extremities can alleviate pain caused by all types of ailments, including carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis and sinus infections.”

Mr. Dhesi says people are often misled by chiropractic firms that have logos featuring spines and backs. “That’s just one aspect of chiropractic. Patients usually learn about their other options when they come in for spinal care and mention another area that’s bothering them. They may tell their chiropractor that they rolled their ankle or have tingling in their hands, and they’re surprised when a chiropractic adjustment to those areas gives them relief.”

Here are some other lesser-known services that many chiropractors provide:

  • Full-body adjustments and realignments
  • Pelvis realignments
  • Headache treatments and migraine relief
  • Pinched nerve relief
  • Diet and nutrition counseling
  • Occupational and athletic movement modifications
  • Asthma and allergy relief
  • Dizziness and vertigo relief
  • Treatment for injuries caused by auto accidents, falls, lifting, whiplash, repetitive movements and workplace accidents

So how do you find a chiropractor who can provide the pain relief you need? Dr. Dhesi recommends making a few phone calls or getting minor adjustments from several local practitioners to get a feel for what each practice offers. “Not all chiropractors are the same,” he says. “Their techniques are different, they interact differently with patients and they provide different types of services.”

Additionally, some chiropractors are comfortable working with other doctors, which is important if you’ve had an accident and are under the care of a physician, surgeon, neurologist or neurosurgeon. “It’s a huge benefit to have a chiropractor who can work with your doctor to coordinate medications, surgeries and treatments,” says Dr. Dhesi. “Ultimately, that type of partnership will help you get better faster.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will you accept my health insurance?

A: We accept most insurance plans because we believe it’s important for people to be able to get the chiropractic care they need. Also, if you don’t have coverage, our regular rates are lower than most practices.

Q: Can you give me a price estimate over the phone?

A: Even though we have a basic fee structure for our chiropractic services, it’s impossible to give an accurate diagnosis over the phone. It’s better to come in for an evaluation so we can see what’s going on with you and recommend the best treatment based on a physical examination.

Q: Can you accommodate my busy schedule?

A: Many of our patients work from 9 to 5 and don’t want to take time off to go to a chiropractic appointment. We understand that, so we stay open until 7pm Monday through Friday. We’re also available by appointment after hours and on Saturday.

Q: Do you take x-rays as part of your treatments?

A: We actually get better results from doing MRIs, so that’s what we recommend if we need images in order to provide an effective treatment. If you’ve recently been x-rayed, we can get those from your doctor so you don’t have to be exposed again.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Dr. Jag Dhesi

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Dr. Jag Dhesi: A Healing Hand

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

LIVERMORE — While many professionals attest to the importance of treating patients like family, for Dr. Jag Dhesi, this philosophy hits especially close to home. “The first inkling I had to become a health professional was seeing the tribulations my mom went through after she hurt her lower back at work,” he remembers. “As a young teenager who was helpless to do anything to ease my mother’s pain, I began to think about ways I might one day be able to help her and other people in similar situations.”

Years later, driven by his altruistic aspirations, Jag began taking pre-med courses in undergraduate school, with plans to become a physical therapist. However, his focus changed after he had a sobering realization. “As I became more acquainted with the medical care system, I began to realize it was a case of the blind leading the blind,” he explains. “I found that in most cases, there was little communication between a patient’s primary doctor and their physical therapist, and the quality of care suffered because the therapist had very little control of the treatment.” While rethinking his options, Jag discovered a much more favorable scenario in the field of chiropractic. “Chiropractic professionals aren’t at the behest of hospitals or physicians when it comes to caring for patients. Rather, they’re able to maintain complete control of the treatment process, which I found very appealing.”

Today, as owner of Springtown Wellness Center—which he operates from three locations alongside his brothers, Sarb and Paul, who are also chiropractors—Jag says providing help for the helpless continues to be at the forefront of his professional ethos. “My brothers and I will always remember what our mom when through, so we treat every person who walks through the door like family. That means each patient gets the same quality of care we’d give to our own mother, regardless of how much time or effort it requires.”

Originally from Rohnert Park, Jag moved all over the Bay Area before eventually settling in Dublin, where he lives with his wife, Rachel, and their three children, Jag Jr., Rayna, and Jaxon. When asked his favorite part about living and working in the Bay Area, Jag cites the region’s characteristic diversity. “I really love the variety of people and cultures we have here, not to mention the food,” he says. “On any given day, you can go to Chinatown or Little Manila and, for a brief moment, feel like you’re in that country. That’s an amazing thing.”

Outside of work, much of Jag’s time is devoted to family activities, from the kids’ school functions and sporting events to just hanging out together around town. However, he also enjoys the occasional quiet day at the lake. “I love to go fishing in my downtime,” he affirms. “I try to rotate through all the different fishing spots in the Bay Area, whether it’s Del Valle, Los Vaqueros or the San Pablo Reservoir.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Jag says he’d take his family on a much needed vacation. “Life can get busy and complicated these days, so I think I’d take my wife and kids somewhere and just leave everything behind for a while. Besides, there’s still a lot of this country—and the world—that I’ve yet to see and experience!”
Ask Me Anything!
Q: How did you get your name?
A: It’s an Indian name that means “Universal Savior” in its entirety. Talk about putting on the pressure!

Q: If you could travel to any country, where would you go?
A: I’d love to go on a Mediterranean tour of Spain, Italy and Greece.

Q: What are your favorite movie genres?
A: Action and science fiction.

Q: What’s the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?
A: Balut. It’s a delicacy in the Philippines. Basically, it’s a duck egg in which the embryo hasn’t fully developed.

Q: Who’s your favorite James Bond?
A: Sean Connery…but I have to say, the new guy is doing pretty well.

  • A Simple Solution for a Common Chiropractic Problem

LIVERMORE — Ask any chiropractor and they’re likely to concur: many of the most common chiropractic issues are caused by the simplest habits. One such example is pain in the hip and tingling or numbness down the leg, which is a common complaint among patients both young and old. Most people are surprised when they discover the unassuming culprit for this prevalent problem: a wallet worn in the back pocket while driving.

In general, your right hip tends to tilt back a little while you’re driving (due to the continuous working of the pedals). Ordinarily, this isn’t a big issue—once you leave your car and start walking, your hip will typically return to the correct position on its own. However, if you keep a wallet in your back pocket while you drive, your hip may become tilted to an inordinate degree. What’s worse, it often won’t go back into place after you exit the vehicle. Over time, your hip can become anywhere from a quarter inch to three quarters of an inch out of alignment, resulting in an uneven gait and excessive soreness.

In addition to contributing to hip misalignment, keeping a wallet in your back pocket while driving can cause sciatica problems. Since a wallet usually sits near both the piriform is muscle and the sciatic nerve, sitting on it for long durations can set off a chain reaction that starts with muscle irritation. As the muscle becomes more aggravated, it begins to spasm, which causes the sciatic nerve to become crimped. The end result is pain, numbness and a tingling feeling down your leg.

Fortunately, there’s a simple way to avoid these painful problems: transfer your wallet from your back pocket to your front pocket before driving or sitting for extended periods of time. This minor change of habit can make a big difference in your chiropractic health.

  • Video: One Factor for Hip and Leg Pain

    Complete Video Transcription

LIVERMORE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you carry your wallet in your back pocket and begin experiencing hip and leg pain, the two might be related. Today, we’re in Livermore with Diamond Certified Expert Dr. Jag Dhesi of Springtown Wellness Center to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Jag Dhesi: There’s a lot of things we’ve seen in the office on a regular basis and the most common thing is actually pain in the hip and down the leg, more often times in the right. And the biggest culprit of that is actually a wallet in the back pocket. The simple reason being, when you drive, in order for the hip to physically press the gas pedals, it tips back a tad. So, you can press gas and brake, everything is fine and dandy.

You get out of the car and the hip pops back up and you never knew it ever happened. Now, say you sit the car, lean to the left, lean to the right, reach in the back seat. In this scenario, wear a wallet in the back pocket. When that does, the hip gets irritated because the irritation when you get out of the car, the hip does not go up, it stays back.

Because even in the office when we check you out, maybe the hip’s off a quarter inch, a half inch, three-quarter inch, whatever it may be. It’s not like the leg got shorter by the same ratio. It’s not a one to one, maybe 16th of an inch, maybe an 8th of an inch. Worst case scenario, maybe a quarter of an inch. That’s something standing or walking, you get sore, a little tighter, faster, you fatigue a little more all because you’re teetering all day.

Not to mention the fact that where the wallet sits on the butt on the guy’s pants, sits on the outside corner. Right near there is your piriformis muscle. Right around there is your sciatic nerve. Let’s say you sit funny on the wallet, you irritate the muscle. When the muscle irritates it, it spasms. When it spasms you crimp the nerve. All of a sudden, pain, numbness, tingling, and leg falling asleep because of a wallet in the back pocket. The simplest thing of a common thing causes the most trauma we see in the office today.
