Comparative Summary

Plumbing companies are always looking for ways to discern themselves from their competition, and those that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award are already several steps ahead. In addition to its Diamond Certified status, Star Rooter and Plumbing, Inc. differentiates itself by offering one of the quickest response times in the industry–a practice that co-owner Fred Ramos says is indicative of the company’s approach to customer service. “We do our best to respond to any call within 45 minutes, which allows us to minimize plumbing-related damage and disruption as much as possible. We look for long-term solutions that benefit our customers, not short-term fixes.”

Star Rooter and Plumbing has been providing residential and commercial plumbing services, sewer and drain cleaning, trenchless sewer repair, and repiping services for Bay Area residents since 2004. Mr. Ramos and co-owner Juan Coronado are veterans of the plumbing industry with more than two decades of combined experience. In order to guarantee top-quality work and maintain their company’s reputation for excellent service, both owners personally inspect every job before it’s completed.

Unlike plumbing companies that take multiple service calls to resolve problems, Star Rooter and Plumbing emphasizes the importance of performing each job correctly the first time. When the company is called to clear a clogged sewer, for example, its plumbers snake the pipes, use a camera to inspect the sewer line and immediately diagnose additional problems at no additional charge. “If there’s a bigger problem, we’ll spot it on that first call,” confirms Mr. Ramos. “Our attention to detail ensures our customers won’t have to worry about reoccurring plumbing problems.”

Another distinguishing feature of Star Rooter and Plumbing is its highly trained and experienced journeymen plumbers, all of whom are on call 24/7 (at no extra charge) for customers’ convenience. “Our plumbers are very reliable,” says Mr. Ramos. “Not only do they work efficiently, they also leave homes and offices cleaner than when they arrived. They work fast and know how to keep our customers happy.”

Industry Info

Regularly maintain your sewer line to avoid a costly replacement in the future. As a homeowner, you’re responsible for the working order of your sewer laterals (the pipes that connect your home to the main sewer) in the same way septic tank owners are accountable for their private home sewage treatment systems. By taking simple maintenance steps, you can avoid the possibilities of sewer backflows, tree root intrusions and poorly functioning drainage systems. To keep your plumbing system operating trouble-free, consider the following tips:

• Don’t rinse cooking fats and grease in your kitchen sink. Instead, wipe them off or collect them in a tin and throw them away.
• Don’t flush non-dissolvable waste down the toilet. Throw away solid waste such as wet towels, diapers and hygiene products.
• To avoid tree root intrusion, don’t plant trees and plants with spreading roots near sewer laterals.
• Conduct weekly drain cleaning maintenance to keep your drains flowing freely. Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Wait a few minutes before rinsing the mixture with boiling water.
• Install sewer backflow devices (SBDs) to avoid the backflow of contaminants into your home’s drinking water.
• Have a professional plumber conduct periodic sewer line inspections to rule out or fix major obstructions.

If you start smelling sewage or notice wet patches in your yard, your sewer line probably needs to be replaced. Replacing a sewer line can be expensive, so before you commit to any work, it’s important to determine if your pipes can be repaired instead. The best way to establish the condition of your sewer line is to have a professional plumber run a camera through it, but there are a few basic things you can look for that can help you decide between repair and replacement.

Repair your sewer pipe if…
• It’s reasonably accessible
• It’s sized properly for the occupants of your home
• It has a reasonable life expectancy for the cost of the repair

Replace your sewer pipe if…
• It’s undersized for the occupants living in your home
• It’s bellied, collapsed, deformed or deteriorated
• It’s beyond the life span of the existing pipe
• You desire a worry-free solution to your sewer issue

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are you local to the East Bay Area? Can you respond quickly?

A: Yes. We keep six plumbing trucks at our Hayward location and have a plumber on call in the Berkeley/Albany area. We can usually respond within 45 minutes, regardless of when you call.

Q: Are your employees professional and trustworthy?

A: Absolutely. All our service trucks are clearly marked and our plumbers wear uniforms to identify themselves as veterans of both the industry and our company.

Q: Why do you use an in-line camera and locator?

A: Using an in-line camera and locator allows us to pinpoint the exact location and extent of any problem within your pipes, which makes for a more effective diagnosis and ultimately saves you money.

Q: Why is my drain system moving so slowly? Is it clogged?

A: Clogged or slow moving drains are normally the result of one of two problems. The first is tree and plant roots. Roots growing into a pipe or joint will clog and eventually crush the pipe, so having your pipe systems cleaned at regular intervals will help extend their lifetimes. The second is clogs in the line. Obstructions, offset joints and age are frequent causes of drain problems. We’re highly trained and utilize the best equipment, which gives us the flexibility to dislodge almost any blockage.

Q: What are the advantages of trenchless sewer line replacement?

A: First and foremost, it’s quicker and less expensive than the traditional ‘dig and back-fill’ method, which requires you to replant your yard, replace sections of your fence, and repair your driveway or sidewalk. The trenchless replacement process requires only two access holes, so your lawn, patio, driveway, sidewalk, fence, and cable and gas lines will remain unscathed. The cost is comparable to, if not less than, the cost of traditional sewer line replacement.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Fred Ramos

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Fred Ramos is a 16-year veteran of the plumbing industry and owner of Star Rooter and Plumbing, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2011. He can be reached at (510) 402-5764 or by email.

Fred Ramos: A Family Connection

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN LORENZO — When asked how he got involved in the plumbing industry, Fred Ramos attributes it to a family connection. “Before becoming a plumber, I was a technician at a home automation company,” he remembers. “My family had been in the plumbing industry for a long time, and eventually they asked me to come over, learn the trade, and help run the family business. Today, I work alongside my wife and my brother, so it’s really a family affair. Even my niece, Jessica, works here as our secretary.”

As owner of Star Rooter and Plumbing, Inc., Fred says that after 20 years in plumbing, his favorite part of his job is being out in the field. “Even though I’m the company owner, I still do service calls. The fact is, I’ve never really liked being in the office—I’d much rather be out interacting with customers and doing hands-on work.”

Originally from Mexico, Fred resides today in Hayward with his wife and three children. Outside of work, he and his family spend the bulk of their free time tending to their ranch. “My family owns a ranch up in the hills, so I like going up there with the kids and riding horses,” he says. “We do some competing on the weekends, so between that and keeping things maintained, it takes up a good amount of time.” Besides horses, Fred’s other passion is baseball. “My kids play baseball and softball, so I enjoy practicing with them, as well as playing with friends every now and then.”

In regard to his professional career, Fred espouses the importance of addressing a multitude of aspects. “When you run a business, you have to be on top of everything,” he explains. “You have to serve the customers, oversee your crew and make sure you have all the right equipment…and that’s just the beginning! I think a big part of my company’s success is having good, hardworking guys who take pride in their work and care about the customers. Plus, when you’ve been doing this as long as we have, it gets to be a routine, so things tend to go pretty smoothly.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Fred says he’d pay a visit to his hometown. “I generally don’t do much traveling, but I do go to Mexico every so often to visit my hometown, Zacatecas. I still have relatives there, including my 94-year-old grandfather, so I enjoy going down and spending time with family and friends.”

  • Sewer Lateral Replacement in Four Steps

SAN LORENZO — Does your home’s sewer lateral need to be replaced? To get an idea of what you can expect from the job, read the following summary of the steps involved.

    1. In-line camera inspection
This inspection will allow your plumbing contractor to see inside your sewer lateral, assess its condition, identify any defects, and determine where the damaged area begins and ends. This will help them ascertain whether the entire lateral needs to be replaced or only a section of it.

    2. Sewer lateral replacement
While trenchless replacement is the simplest way to replace a sewer lateral, it’s not always an option. For example, if there are any sags in the line, it’ll need to be replaced with the traditional open trench technique. Since the trenchless method uses the original line as a guide, any existing functionality problems will only persist with the new one, so a completely new line needs to be installed.

    3. Reconnect the line
After the new sewer lateral is installed, your contractor will need to reconnect it to the city main and the clean-outs.

    4. Inspection and restoration
After the job is complete, it needs to be looked at by a city inspector. Once it passes inspection, the excavated area will need to be backfilled, and the street must be repaved and restored to its original condition.

  • Trenchless Sewer Replacement

SAN LORENZO — In the past, when a sewer line needed to be replaced, it had to be fully excavated, which was an expensive, time-consuming process that carried the added bonus of disrupting one’s lawn, sidewalk and whatever else happened to be in the way. Fortunately, thanks to advancements in plumbing technology, this is no longer the case: with trenchless sewer replacement, a damaged pipe can be replaced quickly, easily and with remarkably little mess.

Rather than tearing up the entire extent of the damaged line, trenchless sewer replacement only requires two holes to be made—one at each end of the pipe section being replaced. This allows the new pipe material (typically a flexible, high-density polyethylene) to be pulled through from one end to the other, using the old pipe as a kind of guide. Simultaneously, as the new pipe is being pulled through, the old pipe is destroyed by a “bursting head” that is attached to the front end of the new line. Altogether, this innovative method enables plumbers to replace a damaged sewer pipe in a matter of hours, with minimal disruption to the customer’s yard, schedule or budget.

  • Video: Sewer Lateral Replacement

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN LORENZO — Fred Ramos: Many customers ask me, what are the steps of a sewer lateral replacement? Step number one: Check your sewer lateral with the camera, inspect it, find out the defects of the line and determination of where the lateral ends and where it starts.

Step number two is open the hole at the beginning of the lateral and open the second hole at the end of the lateral. Make sure that you don’t have any sags in the line to determine whether it’s going to be trenchless or it’s going to be an open trench lateral.

Third thing is, once you install a new trenchless sewer, is to make sure that you connect your clean-outs on the back of the property and also reconnect to the city main.

After that, then you have a inspection by the city. Once you get that done and pass, you can also backfill and clean up your area. Also, the street has to be paved and restored to the normal conditions.

  • Video: Streamlining Sewer Repairs

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN LORENZO — Host, Sarah Rutan: While repairing a sewer line was once an arduous job, modern innovations have enabled plumbers to streamline the process. Today we’re in San Lorenzo with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Fred Ramos of Star Rooter and Plumbing to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Fred Ramos: So, the benefit of trenchless is that you don’t have to do the old way. The old way was to open trench and just mess up your lawn, mess up sidewalk, street, and everything. This is a benefit of the technology, the trenchless system. When you only make two holes, one at the beginning, one at the end, we insert the new pipe through the old pipe. It burst the old pipe and it takes it end to end. And then, within couple hours, you have a brand new line and don’t have to worry about future problems. So, definitely this system is a very good and a benefit from future tree roots coming into your new line.
