Steve Roberts, Owner

Steve Roberts Painting provides a wide range of interior and exterior painting services for residential clients in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. In addition to its general painting capabilities (which include the ability to work with elastomeric and oil-based paint products), the company can match stucco, refinish decks and cabinets, waterproof exterior surfaces, and more.

Owner Steve Roberts says his favorite part of the painting business is seeing the tangible results that come from working hard and applying the right techniques. “With some trades, you have to wait months or years to see results, but with painting, there’s an immediate sense of accomplishment when a project is complete. Our clients appreciate that, too, because they’re able to see their properties transform in a short period of time.”

Steve Roberts Painting takes a comprehensive approach to quality control on every project, which includes focusing intently on preparation and providing the onsite expertise of Mr. Roberts himself. “I always try to get to the job at the end of the day and check the progress of the work, especially if it’s something that’s going to affect the finished product,” he says. “Combined with excellent preparation, this allows us to produce the best possible results.”

Company Philosophy

“Our number one priority is to make our customers happy, and we accomplish that by always listening closely to their concerns, educating them about their options and providing first-rate painting work. We depend on referrals to grow our business, so we do whatever it takes to ensure customer satisfaction on every job.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Steve Roberts Painting, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: complete every job to the client’s exact specifications, even if that means exceeding the industry standards for quality. “Some people don’t fully understand how painting works and expect absolute perfection, so we never consider a project finished until the customer is completely satisfied,” says owner Steve Roberts. “Even if we have to take a loss by using more coats of paint than usual, we’ll do it.”

Steve Roberts Painting has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential clients in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties since 1991. In addition to its general painting capabilities (which include the ability to work with elastomeric and oil-based paints), the company can match stucco, waterproof exterior surfaces, and refinish decks and cabinets. “We also do a lot of high-end trim work, like installing wainscot and crown molding,” adds Mr. Roberts. “That type of work really gives us an opportunity to be creative.”

Unlike less experienced painting companies that focus entirely on maximizing their workload volume and sacrifice a detail-oriented approach to painting in the process, Steve Roberts Painting works on every project with a meticulous attention to detail that ensures nothing is overlooked. “Sometimes when I look at houses that we didn’t paint, I see small flaws like overspray on the foundation or concrete,” says Mr. Roberts. “Those things might seem insignificant to some painting companies, but they would never be acceptable if we were doing the work.”

Mr. Roberts says one of the best parts of the painting trade for him and his employees is the sense of immediate accomplishment it provides. “With some businesses, you don’t see the benefit of what you’re doing for many years, but with painting, it’s right in front of you. When we take a house that doesn’t look very good and turn it into something that can be admired, it’s a very gratifying feeling.”

Industry Info

Don’t cut corners when hiring a painting contractor. Some homeowners think painting the interior or exterior of a house doesn’t require a lot of specialized skill, so they assume an unlicensed painter who offers the lowest bid is just as good as a professional contractor. In reality, not only does it take a professional painter to do a high-quality job, but hiring an unlicensed contractor can cost you a lot of unnecessary time and money in the long run. “Painting can be a dangerous job, so you need to make sure your painter is licensed and carries workers’ compensation insurance in case an injury occurs during the project,” says Steve Roberts, owner of Steve Roberts Painting in Walnut Creek. “If you hire an unlicensed painter, you’ll be financially liable for any injuries sustained on your property, and that can turn into a messy situation.”

Mr. Roberts also warns against cutting corners by using less expensive, low-quality paints. “Using inferior paint always costs more money in the long run,” he says. “You have to use twice as much paint because it doesn’t cover well, which means you’ll spend more money on both the product and the labor it takes to apply it. Those paints also don’t last very long, so you’ll be paying for another paint job sooner than you should.”
A professional painter will also be able to educate you about the new products available on the market, which can save you money and make your home more environmentally-friendly. For example, oil-based paints used to be prevalent in the industry, but now they’re being replaced with Green paint products that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

If your home still has paintwork that was applied prior to 1978, there’s a possibility that it’s lead-based, which means you need to find a painting contractor that’s EPA-certified for lead abatement if any scraping, paint removal or sanding is involved in your project. The fine is steep ($37,500 for each violation), so in order to avoid an expensive setback, it’s important to ensure your painter has the proper license and certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you use subcontractors?

A: We usually use our own employees, but we’ll bring in specialists if a job calls for them. For example, if a customer wants to refinish a hardwood floor, we’ll bring in a subcontractor to strip the floor down to the bare wood.

Q: What kind of paint do you use?

A: We use Kelly-Moore paints on most standard jobs, but for really high-end work, we prefer to use Benjamin Moore paints. Dunn-Edwards also makes really good paint for exterior surfaces. Either way, we have the experience to know what type of paint is going to work best for your particular situation.

Q: Do you maintain a clean worksite?

A: Absolutely. Jobsite cleanliness is very important to us, so we make sure to always use runners to protect our customers’ belongings and clean up after ourselves at the end of every workday.

Q: Do you provide wood repair services?

A: Yes. Unlike many painting companies, we can repair and replace wood molding, stucco and decks. This means you don’t have to bring in another contractor to handle a small repair job.

Q: Can you provide a list of references?

A: Yes, we can give you the contact information of former clients so you can talk to them or visit their properties to see the quality of our work.

Steve Roberts: Bases Coated

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

WALNUT CREEK —As a young man, Steve Roberts aspired to play major league baseball. Although he struck out on this initial dream, his next professional endeavor turned out to be a home run. “Out of college, I played minor league baseball for a time with the hope of making it to the majors,” he recounts. “When that didn’t work out, I wasn’t sure what was next for me, so I took a job with a local painting company. After a couple of years, I decided to start my own painting business. I later shifted to a career in investment banking, but I continued to run my painting company on the side. When I’d finally had enough of investment banking, I went back to full-time painting, and I’ve been doing that for about a decade now.”

Today, as owner of Steve Roberts Painting, Steve says his favorite part of his job is the customer interaction. “I enjoy working with homeowners to achieve their goals for their painting projects. I’ve been really lucky to have so many clients who are great to work with, so seeing the joy and appreciation on their faces when the job is complete gives me a good feeling.”

A resident of Walnut Creek (where he lives with his wife, Rosie), Steve spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes, including his primary avocation of baseball. “I never stopped playing baseball—in fact, I’ve played every season for the past 40 years,” he affirms. “I currently play in a men’s senior league. We go down to Arizona every year in October and have this big World Series where we play teams from around the country.” Steve also enjoys playing golf and traveling. “Rose’s brother lives in Italy, so we enjoy visiting him and experiencing different parts of Europe.”

Reflecting on his extensive career, Steve says his professional philosophy has evolved over time. “When I was young, I was motivated to make a lot of money and be successful, but my priorities have changed as I’ve grown older. Today, my main goal is to improve the lives of those around me and the people I work for. As a painting contractor, there’s only so much you can really contribute to the world, but even something as small as painting a door can have a big impact if it makes someone happy. For me, that’s what it’s all about.”

When asked about his plans for future retirement, Steve says it’s unlikely he’ll ever completely retire. “When I got out of investment banking, I didn’t really miss the work, but I did miss my interactions with clients and colleagues, so I assume I’d feel the same way if I retired from painting. I don’t have any plans to fully retire. If anything, I’ll probably keep a small crew going and just cherry-pick jobs. That would allow me to continue working with people but on a smaller scale.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: The Original Hick’ry Pit in Walnut Creek.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: I’m an early bird.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Japan. They play high-level professional baseball over there, so it would be fun to go to a game and see how they do things differently than in the United States.

Q: What’s your favorite professional baseball team?
A: The Oakland A’s, even though they released me after I played for them in the minors. I was always impressed with their training program, which I thought was a cut above the other organizations I’d played for.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I’d go to the future to see what things will be like in a couple hundred years.

  • 2 Common Interior Painting Mistakes

WALNUT CREEK — Interior painting is a common DIY project, but if you aren’t careful, you can end up making some major mistakes. Here are a couple of common ones to avoid:

Painting over an oil base with latex
One common DIY painting mistake is applying latex paint over an oil-based surface without proper preparation. While most of today’s house paints are water-based, many homes have oil-based paint on the walls, and as everyone knows, oil and water don’t mix. The new coat of water-based paint may look good at first, but soon after drying, it’ll start peeling off in sheets. To avoid this, you’ll need to sand down the existing paint surface and prime it before painting. While this requires a little more work, it’s a lot easier than having to redo the entire paint job.

    Improper patching
Another common mistake occurs when patching nail holes in walls prior to painting. Most people use a putty knife to apply spackle to a hole, but they neglect to wipe away the residual. This typically results in a flat spot about the size of a 50-cent piece, which, if the wall has texture, will stick out like a sore thumb after the paint job is completed. To prevent this, use a moist rag to wipe the residual spackle out of the wall texture following application.

He was careful and thorough. The workers cleaned things up, there was great attention to detail and it's just beautiful. The colors are perfect.

The follow-up, he came back and walked the whole job with me and asked if there was anything else he could do. When I said I would like a little bit of the paint colors for touch up, he didn't have one of them, so he went out, got it special for me, and about a week later, he brought it to me. When he came back, I asked if I could buy a gallon for my daughter and we went and got it for me.
