Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for HVAC contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Supreme Comfort HVAC, Inc., the key to keeping clients happy is simple: take a personal approach to every job, regardless of the size. “We’re homeowners ourselves, so we understand the importance of showing our customers all of their options and coming up with the best solutions to their problems,” says COO Marlen Martinez. “We don’t just provide a quote and move on—we take the time to really understand the issue and determine what the homeowner is looking for.”

Supreme Comfort HVAC has been providing HVAC services for residential and commercial clients in Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, and Alameda Counties since 2006. The company installs, repairs, maintains, and upgrades all types of heating and cooling systems, and it also offers various products that are designed to improve indoor air quality.

Unlike less experienced HVAC contractors that take a “one size fits all” approach to every job, Supreme Comfort HVAC tailors its services to meet each client’s specific needs. “We work hard to understand every customer’s situation, and that includes researching their options to see what makes the most sense,” says Ms. Martinez. “We also take the time to research rebates and credits that may be applicable to further reduce costs.”

Ultimately, Ms. Martinez sees Supreme Comfort HVAC’s dedication to customer service as its most important attribute. “We’re in the service industry, so we want to make sure our clients are completely satisfied,” she says. “At the end of the day, small details are an important part of this type of work, so we routinely test our equipment and show each customer how to use their system as effectively as possible. That’s all part of our mindful approach to quality control.”

Industry Info

Buying and maintaining an efficient HVAC system is an absolute must for any homeowner.

Turn the thermostat up or down and your HVAC system does the work. That’s the way most of us are used to our heating and cooling systems functioning. But as systems age and need to be replaced, consumers can be overwhelmed with choices and information, especially when it comes to energy efficiency.

“Most people haven’t replaced their HVAC systems in 30-plus years, so it’s good to know that you have options,” shares Marlen Martinez, COO of Supreme Comfort HVAC, Inc. in Morgan Hill. In fact, consumers have many more options these days, and most are much more advanced in terms of energy efficiency than units manufactured just a few years ago.

But while your number of choices has greatly expanded, so has the confusion over which make and model is the most efficient choice. Ms. Martinez says there’s no reason to panic or feel overwhelmed—the best HVAC companies should be willing to show you all of your options and recommend the right systems for your needs. “You want a good return on your investment, and a quality HVAC contractor can help you weigh the efficiencies and energy solutions of each option.”

Ms. Martinez says it’s important to remember that different cities have varying regulations for energy efficiency standards. “New laws are applicable to homes and businesses in certain larger cities. Some have construction regulations that say HVAC equipment must be powered by renewable energy instead of gas, so those are things to discuss with your HVAC contractor before you decide on a new system.”

Regardless of the system you buy, ongoing maintenance is crucial for keeping it operating at full capacity and energy efficiency standards. Ms. Martinez recommends regular upkeep of all equipment. “Maintaining the equipment twice a year—before winter and before summer—can help extend the life of the system,” she says. “You should also change the filters at least twice a year.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will my new HVAC equipment last?
A: HVAC equipment is supposed to last 20 to 30 years, but that’s with annual maintenance. Heating and cooling systems are huge investments, so it’s important to maintain them to get their full lifespan.

Q: How can I maintain my HVAC equipment?
A: We recommend regular upkeep of all equipment. Maintaining the equipment twice a year (before winter and before summer) can help extend the life of the system. We also recommend changing filters at least twice a year.

Q: Should I consider energy efficiency when buying a new HVAC system?
A: Definitely. Some cities have regulations that require all HVAC equipment to be powered by renewable energy instead of gas, so you should take that into account before purchasing a new system. We can recommend some quality products that are energy-efficient and will give you a good return on your investment.

Q: Do you offer automated systems?
A: Yes, we have systems that allow you to download an app and control your thermostat with your phone. You can even check details like the amount of humidity inside of your home. There are also thermostats that can learn your behavior and self-regulate accordingly. We’ll go over all of these options and help you find the right system for your needs.

Gabriel Martinez: One Step Toward Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

MORGAN HILL — When Gabriel Martinez took a job in the HVAC industry at age 18, he had no idea just how far that initial step would eventually lead. “My first job after high school was working in a warehouse for a heating and air conditioning distributor,” he recounts. “A few years later, I got into the field doing maintenance and installation for a couple of contractors. I liked being out in the field—the day goes by much faster when you aren’t stuck in the same place. About four years later, in 2006, I decided to go into business for myself. It was kind of a challenge to myself—just to give it a shot and see if I could really make it work.”

Today, as owner of Supreme Comfort HVAC, Inc., Gabriel has no regrets about making the leap from employee to business owner. He says his favorite part of his job is a combination of customer interaction and project completion. “I enjoy meeting new people and completing projects to both the customer’s satisfaction and my own.”

A resident of Morgan Hill (where he lives with his wife and business partner, Marlen, and their two children), Gabriel spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I enjoy going on hikes and camping trips with my family,” he details. “Marlen and I used to travel a lot before we had kids, but it’s not as easy with small children. That’s why we bought an RV trailer—it enables us to travel without the stress of dealing with airplanes or hotels. Besides camping, we have a lot of fun taking the kids to museums, amusement parks and other places.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Gabriel espouses the value of integrity. “I always try to be as fair and straightforward as possible with my customers so there are no surprises,” he explains. “I think this increases their confidence and satisfaction with the final product. Personally, I find it very rewarding to deliver exactly what I promise, on time and on budget.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Gabriel says he’d take a vacation. “I’d do some traveling, both nationally and internationally. There’s a lot to see and learn out there. I’d probably start with a trip to South America—I’ve always wanted to visit Chile, Argentina and Brazil.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?

A: A night owl.

Q: What’s your favorite TV show?

A: “This is Us.”

Q: Do you collect anything?

A: International license plates. Whenever I travel to a new country, I go to flea markets and second-hand stores to look for license plates to take home. I have them all pinned up on the wall at my shop.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: Popcorn.

Q: What was your first pet?

A: An Australian Shepherd named Poncho.

  • The Importance of Changing Your HVAC Air Filter

MORGAN HILL — A crucial aspect of maintaining your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is regularly replacing its air filter. The purpose of an HVAC air filter is to catch dust, dirt, pet dander, smoke particles and other allergens in a home or office’s air stream. Some high-end air filters can even filter airborne pathogens like viruses and bacteria.

By performing its function, an air filter provides a couple of major advantages. First, it keeps the air quality level high inside the home/office, which is better for the health of those inhabiting the space. Second, it helps the HVAC equipment operate more efficiently and extends its operating lifespan.

The proper interval for changing your HVAC air filter depends on a couple of factors. One is whether your home has air conditioning. If you only have heating, changing your air filter twice a year should suffice; however, if you have air conditioning as well, you should change it every three months because it’s doing twice as much work. Other factors include the quality of the HVAC filter you’re using (cheaper filters may need to be changed more often) and whether you have pets that shed, in which case you should probably change your filter more frequently.

  • Video: 3 Benefits of Changing Your HVAC Air Filter

    Complete Video Transcription

MORGAN HILL — Host, Sarah Rutan: Many homeowners neglect to change the air filters in their HVAC systems, but they don’t realize the benefits they’re missing out on as a result. Today, we’re in Morgan Hill with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Gabriel Martinez of Supreme Comfort HVAC to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Gabriel Martinez: One tip in regards to heating and air conditioning equipment is, I like to advise people and then suggest that they replace their air filters. Often—generally about three months. This will do three things to your house or office: it will keep the air quality higher, better in your home or office; it will extend the lifetime of the equipment; and it will help your equipment operate more efficiently. And then some cases, if there are pets or if it’s a high traffic area, probably you need to do it more often. But just keep it clean.
