How prompt he is and how he talked me through the whole process, there were no surprises. If he came upon something unexpected, he pulled me aside and gave me choices between cheaper and safer. I appreciated that.

Pretty much everything, they cleaned up every day after they were done. I didn't feel like I was living at the dump while I was living with construction.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for construction companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Thomas A Daly Construction, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take an interactive, hands-on approach to each job and make sure each client benefits from its vast amounts of industry experience. “I’ve worked on everything from high-rise buildings in New York to pipelines in Alaska and Australia, so I know what works and what doesn’t for most situations,” says owner Thomas Daly. “Simply put, we’re dedicated to completing projects as efficiently as possible.”

Thomas A Daly Construction has been providing construction and remodeling services for residential clients throughout Marin County since 1985. In addition to building decks and patios, the company has the in-house capabilities to create room additions and outdoor living spaces, remodel kitchens and bathrooms, perform foundation work, build retaining walls and carports, and more.

Unlike less experienced construction companies that juggle several jobs at once in an effort to maximize their profits, Thomas A Daly Construction focuses on one project at a time and makes sure all work is complete before moving on to another job. “When a contractor has two or three different projects going at once, there comes a point where it’s difficult to provide consistent quality,” explains Mr. Daly. “By taking jobs on an individual basis, we’re able to ensure each individual customer is satisfied with our work.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Thomas A Daly Construction is its ability to effectively communicate with its clients and work closely with them to bring their projects from conception to reality. “Our customers usually have rough ideas of what they want, and we work with them to develop those ideas and formulate the best plans,” says Mr. Daly. “Our goal is to walk them through the best, most affordable ways to complete their construction projects, and they really appreciate that.”

Industry Info

If you’re building a deck on your property, make sure you consider all your material options. Essentially, decking material comes down to a choice between natural wood and composite wood. According to Thomas Daly, owner of Thomas A Daly Construction in Mill Valley, homeowners who choose natural wood tend to get the most for their money. “Redwood is the most cost-effective option for building a new deck,” he says. “Composite is virtually maintenance-free, but it can cost twice as much as redwood. If eliminating maintenance is your top priority, composite is a good option, but you have to be willing to pay for it.”

One of the reasons composite material is so expensive is because of its complicated installation process. “There’s a lot more work involved in building with composite wood,” affirms Mr. Daly. “For one, you have to use twice as many joists because the material isn’t as strong as redwood. Also, while the quality of redwood has been proven over many years, composite wood is still a fairly recent invention, so some of the newer products don’t have long track records and may have some problems that haven’t been worked out yet.”

Child safety and deck railings
If you’re building a new deck and you have children, safety should be at the top of your priority list, particularly when it comes to the type of railing you install. As a general rule, homeowners with young children should avoid installing railings that encourage climbing or have large gaps that children can slip through. “A lot of people want wire railings that have horizontal strands of wire every three or four inches, but that style isn’t a good idea if you have small children,” says Mr. Daly. “Also, if your deck is high off the ground, I always advise installing a child-friendly railing.”

Frequently Asked Questions

A: Yes, our owner, Thomas Daly, takes a hands-on approach to each project and stays in direct communication with everyone involved.

Q: Do I need a permit to build a new deck?

A: Most likely. The only reason you wouldn’t need a permit is if the deck is less than 30 inches high and isn’t attached to your house.

Q: Do I need to get the permit or will you get it?

A: It’s usually the homeowner’s obligation to obtain the permit, but we can get involved if you need help with that process.

Q: What kind of railing options do I have for my new deck?

A: There are a number of options when it comes to deck railing, including wood, aluminum, glass and wrought iron. We’ll help you determine the best option for your specific situation.

Q: Do I need a permit to build a new patio?

A: No, patios usually don’t require permits.

Thomas Daly: Building a Livelihood

By James Florence, Senior Writer

MILL VALLEY — Daunted by the prospect of a career spent behind a desk, Thomas Daly left his home country to build a new livelihood in the United States. “I was working an office job back in Ireland and I hated it,” he remembers. “Prior to that, I’d spent some time in the U.S. playing for a Gaelic football team, so I decided to return to New York, where I got a job building high-rises. After a few years, I went to Alaska to work on the oil pipeline, and from there I went to Australia to work on another. Eventually, I returned to the U.S., where I settled in Marin County, got my contractor’s license and have been working for myself ever since.”
Today, as owner of Thomas A Daly Construction, Thomas says he enjoys his job’s combination of physical work and mental challenges. “I love that I get to be outside working with my hands every day. Plus, I like that fact that I’m always learning new things. As a contractor, you never stop learning because every job requires a different set of solutions.”
A resident of Mill Valley, Thomas likes to spend his free time staying active. “I’m a member of Bay Club Marin in Corte Madera, where I spend a lot of my time swimming and working out,” he says. “I also play a bit of tennis and squash on the weekends, and occasionally indoor soccer, though I’m getting a bit old for that.” Thomas also likes to travel on a regular basis. “I have family and a small farm in Ireland, so I like to go back there a few times a year. My wife usually books us a trip to somewhere like Spain or Portugal while we’re there. I enjoy going to different places and meeting different people.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Thomas believes in providing the same level of quality and service he’d expect for himself. “I try to perform every job as if I was working on my own house,” he explains. “When doing estimates, I always recommend what I think is best for the customer’s particular circumstances. Overall, I believe in giving my customers quality work for a fair price.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Thomas says he wouldn’t. “I would close the lid on my own coffin,” he laughs. “Retirement isn’t on my horizon—I’ll keep working until I drop. I enjoy my time off, of course, but I like having work to come back to, and that will be the case as long as I’m in the world.”
Ask Me Anything!
Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: Both. I go to bed around midnight and I’m usually up by 6am.

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: When I’m the U.S., I drink coffee, but when I’m in Ireland, I drink tea, which is what I was raised on.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: I have two: The Cantina in Mill Valley and The Mayflower Pub in San Rafael.

Q: What kinds of books do you like to read?
A: Mostly biographies and history books, especially anything about the American Revolution and the Civil War.

Q: If you could talk to anyone living or dead, who would you choose?
A: Abraham Lincoln. I’d like to hear what he has to say about what’s going on in this country today.

  • Assessing Deck Safety

MILL VALLEY — In the past, many wood decks were built with Douglas fir wood, but time has shown it’s not a good material to use due to its susceptibility to rot. During my 30 years as a deck builder in Marin County, I’ve had to replace countless Douglas fir decks that were rotted out, which in many cases created very dangerous conditions. In particular, if a deck’s support beams are compromised, they could potentially break and cause the whole thing to fall apart. For this reason, if you have an old Douglas fir deck, I recommend having it professionally assessed for safety.

If you need to replace a Douglas fir deck, don’t repeat the same mistake that was made in the past: Use a high-quality, pressure-treated redwood or cedar product. If well-maintained, these materials will last a lifetime, ensuring safety and giving you a great value for your investment.

    Complete Video Transcription

MILL VALLEY — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re building a new deck, make sure to choose a product that will last. Today we’re in Mill Valley with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Thomas Daly of Thomas A Daly Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Thomas Daly: I’ve been building decks in Marin County for the last 30 years and Doug Fir is the old way that the decks were built, which is, it rots out after a while. And it’s a very dangerous aspect of building decks, particularly when we cantilever as they’ll just break off and people will get hurt. So the new aspect is using pressure-treated material, which lasts a lifetime and that’s the best way, the best way to build a deck. And people should be aware of the danger of their old decks, as Doug Fir does not last outside and needs to be checked by a contractor to make sure that everything is safe and the way it’s supposed to be.
