Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for landscape contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Valley Oak Landscaping, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: focus all its efforts on creating outdoor living spaces that provide clients with lasting enjoyment. “A lot of landscape companies don’t take the long term into account, but that’s one of our top priorities,” says owner Greg Baker. “We know what it takes to create landscapes that will still be beautiful and functional 10 years down the road.”

Valley Oak Landscaping has been providing landscape services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma County and Northern Marin County since 1980. The company creates custom landscapes that feature everything from fences, decks and arbors to retaining walls, ponds and lighting systems, and it also offers commercial maintenance services such as tree care, pest control, and irrigation system installation and management.

Unlike less experienced landscape contractors that sacrifice customer service for quick turnaround times, Valley Oak Landscaping places a high priority on communicating with its clients and being responsive to their needs. “Our clients are the most important aspect of our business, and we want to make sure they always feel that way,” says Office Manager Erica McElhaney. “We have systems in place to make sure every call and email is returned in a timely manner, so whenever a client has questions about a certain phase of their project or wants to make changes, we’re able to immediately address their needs.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Valley Oak Landscaping is its commitment to taking on one project at a time, which Mr. Baker says is important for ensuring consistent levels of quality. “Unlike a lot of landscaping companies, we don’t try to juggle three or four jobs at once. When we start a job, we won’t just leave it for three days to work on someone else’s property. Focusing on one project at a time makes it easier to keep our customers happy.”

Industry Info

If you’re a homeowner, consider the benefits of replacing your lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape. A growing trend among Bay Area homeowners is swapping water-guzzling lawns for more economical alternatives. Drought-tolerant landscaping (also known as xeriscaping or smartscaping) offers a fresh approach that seeks to minimize a property’s water consumption while maximizing its functionality and aesthetic value. For some, the term “drought-tolerant” may evoke desert-like images, but most homeowners are surprised at how lush and colorful water-conserving gardens or yards can actually be.

In order to fashion yards that are simultaneously water-wise and eye-catching, drought-tolerant landscaping places a heavy emphasis on creative design. Unlike traditional lawns, which easily fill out large areas of properties, drought-tolerant landscapes require more innovative strategies and arrangements. For instance, a diverse grouping of succulents and California-native plants situated within a mulched area and accented with ornamental grass can offer aesthetic intrigue while minimizing water consumption. Additionally, the incorporation of hardscape features like flagstones and artistic elements like stone sculptures can further enhance a drought-tolerant yard’s visual appeal.

For those who prefer the look of a uniform green lawn, there are several alternatives that replicate the properties of traditional grass while requiring a fraction of the water. Lawn-like substitutions (often referred to as “ground covers”) range from clover and moss to varieties like Blue Star Creeper and Elfin Thyme. While each variety emphasizes different qualities—for example, some are purely ornamental while others are more tolerant of foot traffic—by doing some research, you can find a lawn substitute that best fits your needs. Another option that’s growing in popularity is synthetic lawns, which have come a long way in terms of offering an authentic look and feel.

Although drought-tolerant landscaping’s top priority is water conservation, this often goes hand-in-hand with a secondary goal: minimizing maintenance. While this is already a natural byproduct of installing plants that require less water, the installation of a sublevel drip irrigation system can make maintaining your yard or garden practically effortless.

Greg Baker: A Natural Inclination

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — Greg Baker’s first clue that he had a future as a landscaping professional was that he was the only kid he knew who actually enjoyed doing yard work. “When I was growing up, my parents had a three-quarter acre lot where I spent a good part of each weekend working on landscaping projects with my dad,” he recounts. “I remember my friends all complaining about how much they hated doing yard work, but I really didn’t mind it—in fact, I actually kind of liked it.”

By the time he was in middle school, Greg’s natural inclination for landscape work had led to an entrepreneurial opportunity. “When I was 12, I put an ad in the local newspaper advertising yard work services,” he says. “I would ride my bike over to customers’ houses to water their plants, mow their lawns and perform various sorts of gardening work. In the fall, I would grow pumpkins and sell them on the corner, which was something I really enjoyed as well.”

Following high school, Greg enrolled at his local community college as a nursery production major, with the hope of eventually opening his own nursery. However, it wasn’t long before his entrepreneurial penchant resulted in a slight change of direction. “About a year into college, I found myself in need of a job,” he says. “I never really liked working for other people, so I decided to hang up my proverbial shingle and began advertising my services as a gardener/landscaper. I was so successful that I ended up switching my major from nursery production to landscape construction.”

Today, as owner of Valley Oak Landscaping, Inc., Greg explains how his favorite things about his job have evolved over time. “In the early years, my favorite part was actually doing the work and seeing the product of my labor,” he says. “Today, I’d say it’s the residual gratification I get from long-term relationships, both with my employees and my customers. For instance, I have guys who’ve been with me so long that their kids are now starting to work for the company. Likewise, it’s neat when a customer tells me we landscaped their parents’ house because that means our good reputation has trickled down to a younger generation.”

A lifetime resident of Sonoma County, Greg expresses his appreciation for the region’s many desirable characteristics. “From the great weather to the wine country, Sonoma County has a lot to offer,” he affirms. “When you tell someone where you’re from and they respond that it’s their favorite vacation spot, it reminds you that you live in a special place.”

Outside of work, Greg enjoys a variety of activities, from exploring the outdoors to attending wine country events like concerts and barrel tastings. “I live near Annadel State Park, where I spend a fair amount of time hiking and mountain biking,” he says. “No matter what time of year it is, there are always beautiful scenic views.” Greg also enjoys spending time with his two grown children, Madeline and Justin. “My daughter and I enjoy going to the movies and taking cruises together, whereas my son is more outdoorsy, so we connect through activities like fishing and hunting.”

In regard to his professional career, Greg espouses the importance of personal integrity. “I think that if you’re honest and hardworking, your customers will respect and trust you,” he says. “My goal has always been to do things to the best of my ability and follow through with what I promise to deliver, and I think that’s something my customers really appreciate.”

When asked what his future retirement might look like, Greg says he’d take off for some extensive travel. “After my dad retired, he spent a lot of time traveling, taking as much as three or four months at any given destination. He said this approach allowed him to really get a feel for a place, because he wasn’t in a rush to see everything. I’d like to do the same thing after I retire.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Green tea.

Q: What’s your favorite season?
A: Fall. I like the way the air feels and all the beautiful colors.

Q: If you could travel to another country, where would you go?
A: Probably France. I almost went there a few years ago, but I ended up spending too much time in Italy.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Willi’s Wine Bar in Santa Rosa.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Turn on the fire, cozy up under a blanket and watch a good movie.

  • Protecting Your Drip Irrigation System

SANTA ROSA — In response to the drought conditions that California is currently facing, many Bay Area residents are converting their existing water sprinkler systems to drip irrigation. While this is a great water-saving measure, a critical yet often overlooked aspect of installing a drip irrigation system is protecting it from exterior elements.

There are several sources of potential damage that threaten an exposed drip irrigation system. One is exposure to sunlight, which can cause irrigation hoses to become corroded over time. Likewise, local wildlife can be a concern, as animals like deer are known to chew on water emitters in an attempt to get hydration. When a drip system’s hoses and emitters become damaged, it often results in leaks, which can compromise the reason for having the system installed in the first place.

The best way to protect your drip irrigation system from these and other sources of damage is to bury it beneath the soil. In addition to providing protection from damage, burying a drip system situates it closer to the plants’ root zones, which reduces evaporation and makes for even more efficient watering.

  • Video: Helpful Tips for your Drip System

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you have a drip irrigation system on your property, you may benefit from a few helpful tips. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Greg Baker of Valley Oak Landscaping to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Greg Baker: With the drought conditions that all of California is facing, many people these days are converting their sprinkler systems to drip systems. One important aspect of installing a drip system is to bury it beneath the earth. Placing it under the mulch or on the surface just is not adequate.

Several things that can happen is number one the sun corrodes it over time so you can get holes and leaks, then you’re using much more water than is necessary. Animals can step on it and break it, such as deer. And animals actually go to that water source and will chew on it looking for water, especially during these drought conditions.

So, I recommend to always bury your drip system below the soil.
