Company Philosophy

“Attention to detail is very important to us, so we take the time to ensure every phase of our work is done correctly. We don’t want to be the biggest garage door company in the Bay Area; we simply want to do quality jobs that leave our clients completely satisfied.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for garage door companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Vulcan Garage Services Inc., the easiest ways to keep clients happy are to spend time listening to their needs and make sure they get exactly what they want. “A lot of homeowners don’t know what they want or what’s available, and not all contractors present their clients with options, so we really focus on each customer’s specific needs,” says CEO Michael Fahey. “We take the time to educate our clients and let them know exactly what we can do for them, which they really appreciate.”

Vulcan Garage Services has been installing and repairing garage doors for residential and commercial clients in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, San Francisco, Contra Costa, and Marin Counties since 2017. The company has the in-house capabilities to handle everything from broken torsion springs to complete door replacements, and it’s also qualified to install and repair automatic gates, fix garage door openers, and more.

Unlike garage door companies that take a “one size fits all” approach to every job, Vulcan Garage Services focuses on details and treats each project with personalized care. “Our attention to detail is unmatched,” says Mr. Fahey. “We’re trained to find solutions and overcome problems. Sometimes our clients are shocked at what we’re able to do to get their garage doors up and running. We have what it takes to handle even the toughest situations.”

Another distinguishing feature of Vulcan Garage Services is its utilitarian approach to garage doors. “People often use garage doors as entries to their homes, but we want our doors to add to our clients’ homes in addition to being safe and dependable,” explains Mr. Fahey. “In fact, we specialize in high-lift and roof-pitch garage doors that are designed to maximize space and change the feel and function of garages. In any case, we always let the client’s goals dictate the course of the job.”

Industry Info

When it comes to fixing a garage door, it’s best to leave the work to the experts.

Do your garage door springs need to be repaired or replaced? Is your garage door opener or sensor malfunctioning? Are you considering installing a brand-new garage door? You might think these are all DIY projects, but due to the complicated nature of the work, it’s best to call a trained and experienced garage door company. Here’s why:

Garage doors are inherently dangerous
“Garage door springs are under tension, so if the cables snap, it can cause some serious damage,” says Michael Fahey, CEO of Vulcan Garage Services Inc. in San Jose. “Some people think they can handle the job themselves, but if their garage door falls on top of their car, it’s a different story.”

In fact, garage door springs are under hundreds of pounds of pressure, and homeowners have been seriously injured trying to repair or replace them. Likewise, garage doors are extremely heavy, so those that aren’t installed properly are likely to fall.

While garage door repair technicians make it look easy, the work is anything but. “Technicians have a difficult job and should be treated with a lot of respect,” says Mr. Fahey. He adds that the cost of repairs can sometimes surprise homeowners. “It’s worth the money because the work is very dangerous if it isn’t done properly.”

Experts can give you more options
Garage doors used to be fairly no-frills, but today’s homeowners don’t need to settle for standard options. From safety sensor options to legally required battery backups, garage door contractors can customize your space with a variety of products. “For example, new garage door operators are Wi-Fi compatible, so you can manage your door remotely,” says Mr. Fahey.

Additionally, location and installation can be customized in ways that DIYers can’t match. “Side-mount motors are becoming more prevalent,” says Mr. Fahey. “A lot of people get a garage door with a standard track, but you can do something different that will open up and utilize the space better for slightly more money. In the Bay Area, homeowners should look past what’s standard and find ways to better utilize their garage space.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you recommend the best garage door for my needs?
A: Yes, we can show you several options that will fit your home. A lot of people care about aesthetics and curb appeal, so we’ll start by asking about your goals and style preferences. Once we have that information, we can give you options in various price ranges.

Q: What material choices do I have for a new garage door?A: There are numerous options available, so it depends on your budget, the look you want and the structure of your home. We’ll review all of these options with you once we determine your needs.

Q: How do I know my garage repairs will last?
A: Our repairs typically come with a one-year warranty, but if you follow our recommendations, we can offer an extended warranty. Ultimately, we want your garage door to be dependable and safe.

Q: Where can my garage door opener motor be mounted?
A: Lately, many customers have been asking us about side-mount motors instead of motors that go down the middle of the garage. Depending on the layout of your garage, we can help you create more overhead space. Each garage is unique, so we try and recommend a motor placement that best fits each particular garage layout.

Q: What should I think about before getting a new garage door?
A: Think about your particular house and the type of garage door that will benefit you. You should always consider comfort along with aesthetics and functionality. For example, if your home faces south or west, think about insulation and heat gain in the summer. You should also think about using your space properly. A lot of people get a garage door with a standard track, but you can do something different that will open up and utilize the space better for slightly more money.

Michael Fahey: Garage Door Guru

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — When Michael Fahey answered an ad for a management position, he had no idea where it would lead him…especially because it didn’t specify the industry. “It was just a generic ad placed by an owner looking for someone to run his company for him,” he recounts. “It wasn’t until later that I found out it was a garage door company. With my background in sales, marketing and home improvement, I had all the qualifications the owner was looking for, so I decided to give it a shot.” In 2018, nearly a decade later, Michael took the knowledge and experience he’d accumulated and started an independent garage door service company with partners Cory Wikstrom and Chad Wolffe.

Today, as CEO of Vulcan Garage Services Inc., Michael says his favorite part of his job is educating customers. “When it comes to garage door replacement, most homeowners don’t know the full extent of their options. That’s why I like educating customers and helping them find products that best suit their needs. It’s very rewarding when a customer is ecstatic because their door looks and functions better than they’d ever imagined.”

A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Lisa), Michael spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I’m an avid gardener,” he details. “I’m on a continual mission to grow the perfect tomatoes, beets and asparagus. I’m also involved in an adult flag football league along with my daughter. At my age, I prefer to just watch my daughter play, but if they’re short on people, I’ll get in there, too.”

In regard to his business, Michael espouses the value of a dedicated employee team. “When you’re in a service-based industry, you need employees who aren’t only skilled at their jobs but also take care of customers,” he explains. “In addition to hiring good people, it helps to provide your employees with motivation. That’s why Cory, Chad and I offer our guys financial incentives for meeting specific goals, one of which is customer satisfaction. When your employees have a vested interest in making your customers happy, that’s a recipe for success.”

  • The Benefits of a Wi-Fi Enabled Garage Door

SAN JOSE — One upgrade all homeowners should consider is converting to a Wi-Fi enabled garage door. Incorporating Wi-Fi into your garage door’s motor will allow you and your family members to open and close the door from a smartphone app. Not only is this feature convenient, it can also go a long way toward increasing home security.

The biggest benefit of having a Wi-Fi enabled garage door is the capability for remote operation. It doesn’t matter if you’re at work or vacationing in Italy; if you have an internet connection, you’ll be able to operate your door. This can come in handy in several scenarios. For example, have you ever been out and suddenly had a sinking feeling you left your garage door open? With a Wi-Fi enabled door, you don’t have to worry—just one tap on your phone’s screen will give you assurance that everything is safe and secure.

Another scenario where this capability can come in handy is with package delivery. Everyone knows “porch piracy” is a big problem these days, but with a Wi-Fi enabled garage door, you don’t have to worry whether your packages will be there when you get home. Just leave instructions for the delivery person to call you when they arrive. When you receive the call, you can open the garage door and they can leave the package inside.

These are just a couple of examples of how a Wi-Fi enabled garage door can improve home security and peace of mind. Considering the relatively low expense of this upgrade, it’s well worth the investment.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Michael Fahey: Before you call a garage door service tech to come out and service your non-working garage door, you may want to check one thing out. Scenario would be if you come out and your remotes or your keypad is not working, sometimes it’s relatively minor. Look to your wall control button that’s next to your entry door. On there in the Linear there’s a lock button. Sometimes it’s accidentally pressed down and it will shut off your remotes and your keypad. Just move it. Your garage door may work. Same thing, another brand Liftmaster has one that’s actually [00:00:39 easier to be] pushed, which can be accidentally pressed down and – and shut off the power. Cory Wikstrom: Working in Doors

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — Starting in his early 20s, Cory Wikstrom has spent nearly his entire professional career working in doors—garage doors, specifically. “Right out of high school, my younger brother got a job with a garage door company owned by his friend’s family,” he remembers. “It seemed like a good job, so I decided to apply and got hired. I spent the next eight years there before moving on and working for a few other garage door companies.”

Eventually, Cory started talking with his friend/co-worker Chad Wolffe about starting their own garage door business. However, one element was still missing. “While Chad and I had lots of knowledge and experience, we needed someone with a strong sales and administrative background—someone who knew how to keep books and get the phones to ring,” he explains. “We found that someone in Mike Fahey, who had managed the company Chad and I were working at. Together, we officially launched our own business in 2018.”

Today, as secretary of Vulcan Garage Services Inc., Cory wears more than a few hats. “I handle pretty much anything from answering the phone to training our technicians to doing installations,” he says. “If we get a call from outside the area our technicians are working in, I’ll often run out and take care of it.”

A resident of South San Jose, Cory spends the bulk of his time outside of work with his family. “My wife, Missy, and I have four kids, three of whom still live at home,” he details. “We enjoy activities like bowling, hiking at Almaden Quicksilver County Park and spending the day at Pismo Beach. We also have two dogs, a German Shepherd and a Great Pyrenees, so we’re always looking for new dog parks and hiking trails.”

In regard to his professional career, Cory espouses the importance of honesty. “At my old job, I’d actually get in trouble for being too honest with customers,” he laughs. “If a customer asked me, ‘Do I need to replace this part?’ I’d tell them the truth, even if that meant less money for the company. A lot of guys would be happy to sell the customer something they didn’t need, but that seemed wrong to me. Plus, when you’re honest, it usually pays off in the form of a good reputation and increased customer loyalty.”

  • Making the Most of Your Replacement Garage Door

SAN JOSE — When purchasing a replacement garage door, smart choices can help you make the most of your investment. Here are a few tips:

Consider money-saving alternatives. A high-end, carriage-style wood door can cost more than $10,000. For a fraction of that price, you can Get a metal door with the same design that provides a nearly identical look.

Invest in an insulated door. An insulated door is essentially two single-panel doors with a piece of foam inserted between them. For a slightly higher cost, you’ll essentially get double the durability and longevity of a single-panel door, so it’s well worth the additional investment.

Consider customized door track options. Most garages utilize a standard garage door track, but if your garage’s ceiling is taller than average, you may benefit from a customized track design. By increasing the radius of the track, you can get more clearance, smoother door operation and a cleaner overall look.

Consider a powder coated door track. Few homeowners realize they can customize the look of not only their garage door but their door track as well. With powder coating (a color application that’s more durable than paint), you can alter the color of your standard metal door track to one that complements your garage door.

  • Video: How to Manually Open a Garage Door

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your garage door is stuck in the closed position, knowing how to open it manually can get you out of a tight spot. Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Cory Wikstrom of Vulcan Garage Services to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Cory Wikstrom: When you hit your wall button or your remote and the door doesn’t open, first thing you can do before calling a garage door company is release the door from the motor. Doing this, you should be able to lift the door by hand. If you can’t lift the door by hand, then you know you have a door problem. If you can lift the door by hand and it’s fairly easy to move, then that means you have a motor issue. So at least if it’s just the motor, you’re able to get your cars out of the garage, you’re able to open and close it and still lock it until you get a service technician out there.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Chad Wolffe

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Chad Wolffe is CFO of Vulcan Garage Services Inc., a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (408) 827-8993 or by email.

Chad Wolffe: A Fitting Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — When Chad Wolffe first looked into becoming a garage door technician, he found it was a good fit in more ways than one. “Before I got into garage door service, I was a technician for DirecTV,” he recounts. “One thing I didn’t like about my job was that I always had to access hard-to-reach places. If I wasn’t up on a 40-foot ladder, I was squeezing into a tight crawl space or attic. Being a larger guy, this was a constant struggle. Eventually, I decided to look for a different line of work and put my resume online. Soon after, I was contacted by a garage door service company and agreed to go on a ride-along. I immediately liked it—not only was it a good fit for my skill set, it didn’t require any tall ladders or crawl spaces!”

From that point, Chad’s professional path took several turns, from starting his own garage door business to joining the police force. “When my garage door business slowed down, I decided to switch gears and follow my lifelong dream of becoming a police officer,” he says. “After about two years on the force, I decided it wasn’t for me, so I went back to doing what I knew best.” A few years later, Chad joined forces with his friend/co-worker, Cory Wikstrom, and their former manager, Mike Fahey, to start an independent garage door service company.

Today, as CFO of Vulcan Garage Services Inc., Chad says his favorite part of his job is watching his employees grow. “When we started, rather than hiring seasoned technicians, we intentionally hired people with no prior industry experience. That way, we wouldn’t get technicians who had already developed bad habits—we could teach them the right way from the start. It has been very rewarding to watch our guys go from knowing nothing to being successful and loving their trade.”

A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Jennifer, and son, Brandon) Chad spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “Being a mechanically inclined person, I enjoy working on automobiles,” he details. “I also love standup comedy and spending time with my family. My wife and I like going on walks and hikes together, and my son is an avid rugby player, so I enjoy being involved with that.”

In his life and career, Chad espouses the importance of happiness. “The way I see it, if I’m not happy in my work, I’m not doing myself or anyone else any favors,” he explains. “The same goes for my employees. Their happiness is important—after all, they’re out there interacting with clients and representing the business. By treating our guys right and keeping them happy, we know our customers will be treated right and kept happy, so it’s a win-win.”

  • Garage Door Maintenance

SAN JOSE — Like any mechanical device, a garage door has a lot of moving parts that require periodic maintenance. Fortunately, maintenance is pretty simple for a garage door. All you need to do is lubricate its rollers, hinges and other moving parts with a white lithium or silicon spray. By doing this twice a year, you’ll keep your garage door operating smoothly, as well as extend its lifespan and avoid costly repairs.

Keep in mind that if your garage door makes a lot of noise while opening and closing, this should raise a red flag. Lubrication may not always do the trick, so if your door is still noisy despite ongoing maintenance, call your local garage service company to schedule a professional assessment.

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: Did you know that a simple biannual step can extend your garage door’s operating lifespan? Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Chad Wolffe of Vulcan Garage Services to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Chad Wolffe: Now garage doors have some of the most moving parts in your entire home, and they do need some assessment and they need care. A quick tip for you is general simple lubrication with either a white lithium spray or a silicon spray I’d say twice a year – one time in the winter and one time in the summer. You’re just going to generally lubricate the moving rollers and the hinges, anything that is pivoting or moving, and this will guarantee longevity in your garage door and your moving parts and a smooth cycling garage door.

Also a safety tip, if your door is making a lot of noise, unwanted noise, that’s probably a red flag. Lubrication may not always do the trick, so be sure to give us a call and we can come out for you and make an assessment.
