Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for flooring showrooms that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Watson’s Flooring, achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is a direct result of its hands-on approach to interacting with its customers, which, according to owners Antonia and Waldo Rodas, provides them with a better overall experience. “Everyone who comes in here deals directly with us, and that really makes them feel more comfortable with the entire process,” they say. “We’re here to provide the best possible service from beginning to end.”

Watson’s Flooring has been offering a comprehensive selection of carpeting; area rugs; and hardwood, vinyl and laminate flooring products at its San Carlos showroom since 1995. As an affiliate of nationwide retailer Abbey Carpet & Floor, the company has access to high-quality products made by leading manufacturers such as Mohawk, Milliken, American Showcase and more. It also offers professional design services that include one-on-one consultations and free estimates.

One of Watson’s Flooring’s most distinguishing characteristics is its dedication to developing long-term relationships with its customers, which continue even after their flooring warranties have expired. “We always put our customers first,” confirms Mrs. Rodas. “We want them to know we’ll be there for them if they ever have any problems or questions. The peace of mind we provide is just as important as any of our other services.”

Industry Info

Make sure you’re taking the proper steps to care for your specific type of flooring.

In order to effectively prevent spills, stains and other elements from damaging your flooring, it’s important to remember that each type of flooring requires slightly different care. Most flooring comes with specific manufacturer instructions for care and maintenance, and in some cases, the warranties can even be voided if you don’t follow these directions. To properly care for the three most common types of household flooring, consider the following tips:

Carpet

  • Use floor mats inside and outside entrances to prevent soil from being tracked into your home. Use carpet runners in high-traffic areas to prevent soiling and carpet fiber matting.
  • Vacuum frequently to remove dust, debris and soil before it can get into the base of the carpet or wear the fibers.
  • Buy the right kind of vacuum for your carpet. Most carpeting can be cleaned using a vacuum with a beater bar or rotating brush, but those with thick loop pile can be damaged by vacuum brushes and should only be cleaned with suction vacuums.
  • Have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and stains. Some carpet manufacturers require regular cleanings as part of their warranty terms.

Laminate flooring

  • Regularly mop your laminate flooring with plain water or a light cleanser to keep stains and dirt from causing damage.
  • Place door mats at all entrances to keep your floor looking new for longer.
  • Never use harsh cleansers, abrasive brushes, metal implements or steel wool to clean your laminate floor.
  • Put protectors and sliders under furniture feet. Never drag heavy furniture over your floor.
  • Never wax or polish a laminate floor.

Wood flooring

  • Use floor mats and rugs to prevent scratches and unnecessary wear.
  • Even small dirt particles can scratch the wood when they’re walked on, so sweep regularly to keep dust from accumulating.
  • Never wax hardwood floors that have a urethane finish. Instead, use a specially formulated cleanser that won’t leave residue or film.
  • Avoid mopping and using water to clean your hardwood floor. Wood absorbs water and expands when it’s wet, so excessive amounts of water can make a wood floor swell, crack, splinter and discolor.
  • Never drag heavy items across the surface of the floor—this can scratch the surface and underlying layers of wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I buy from you instead of a home improvement store?

A: When you buy from us, you’re dealing directly with the owner, not an employee behind a counter. That means we have a bigger stake in what we sell and install, so we’re going to do everything possible to ensure you’re happy with your new flooring. We can often beat the prices of home improvement stores, too.

Antonia Rodas: Flooring With the Family

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN CARLOS — When Antonia Rodas followed her father and brothers into the family trade, she had no idea how far the path would lead. “My father, Waldo, has been a carpet installer for more than 20 years, so I grew up around the flooring industry,” she says. “My brothers ended up following him into the industry and becoming installers, so when the time came for me to choose a career, I decided to try it as well. My first job was working in the warehouse, where I handled phone and online orders. A couple of years later, I was hired at Watson’s Floor Covering, Inc. as a salesperson. Working with customers face-to-face was completely new to me, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly, and eventually, I was promoted to a management position. In 2021, my father and I purchased the company from the original owner.”

Today, Antonia says her favorite part of her job is interacting with customers. “I like sharing my knowledge with our customers and forming relationships with them. I find that making friends with them at the beginning helps them relax and enjoy the process.”

A resident of San Mateo County, Antonia spends her time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I tend to be outgoing and even a little adventurous, so I enjoy taking road trips, hanging out with family and friends, and outdoor activities like hiking. However, I can be pretty laid-back, too, so I also like to be home, relax in my backyard or binge-watch Netflix. It just depends on how I’m feeling in the moment.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Antonia espouses the importance of instilling trust. “My goal is to make every customer feel comfortable about entrusting their job to us,” she explains. “Most of our customers are local to the San Carlos area, which means they’re our neighbors, so earning their trust is very important to me. It makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger—not just doing my job, but being a valuable member of my community.”

When asked the first thing she’d do if she were to retire tomorrow, Antonia says she would see the world. “I’d like to see every place on Earth. There’s just so much to explore and learn about—so many different cultures and environments. I haven’t had the chance to do a lot of traveling yet, but if I retired early, I’d definitely visit some new places.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?
A: I’m a dog person.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Spain.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: I’m a night owl.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: Real Madrid CF.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: I like listening to calm music and watching the rain.

  • Flooring Installation Tips

SAN CARLOS — Are you planning to have new flooring installed in your home? Consider the following tips:

    • If your floors are being installed as part of a larger remodeling project, we recommend saving this step for last. By focusing on aspects like painting first, you’ll remove the possibility of damaging the new flooring.
    • Make sure your residence provides adequate space and access for the crew to work. If you live in an upstairs condo or a place that has limited access and/or parking, be sure to let your flooring installer know. Also, keep in mind that the crew will need a separate room to cut flooring pieces as they work.
    • If you have specific preferences regarding the look and pattern of your flooring, discuss them with your installer beforehand. Wood flooring boards typically come in a range of light and dark shades, and some will contain knots and blemishes. Normally, these are distributed evenly throughout the home, but if you have certain preferences (such as only using light boards or leaving out pieces with imperfections), you’ll need to make arrangements in advance. Otherwise, there may not be enough of your preferred boards in the product mix.
    • Be aware that flooring installation is like any other type of construction work, which means some touch-ups may be needed after completion. For example, moldings and baseboards might get scratched and require paint touch-ups. This is a normal byproduct of having new flooring installed.
