I've referred them to friends before, so they're reliable, trustworthy, friendly, and helpful. Right now, they're just too busy.

When I bought my house in the late 90s, I bought it as is and it needed a little work. They were the only ones who even showed up to their scheduled appointment. The owner was great and helpful, he pointed out the things that really did need to be taken care of right away, and then pointed out the things I could do on my own that didn't require a professional. I felt like he wasn't trying to pull a fast one or make me spend more money than was necessary. He really won my trust then, so I've used them again and again over the years.

That they're very helpful and anything you need help with around the house, he's right there to help you with it. They gave me advice for things I wasn't sure about and things that weren't as bad as I thought.

How they clean up after they do the work, how they do a good job, and they are not overpriced.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For We Love Small Jobs Handyman Services-Remodelers & Builders, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a detail-oriented approach to each job and treat every client’s home with the utmost respect. “We do small things that our clients really appreciate, like taking off our shoes, closing doors behind us, and putting tools and materials in safe places,” says owner Moorice Tarik-El. “Simply put, we work on every home as if it was our own.”

We Love Small Jobs has been providing general contracting services for residential and light commercial clients throughout Alameda County since 1985. The company handles everything from carpentry and interior/exterior painting to electrical and plumbing work for small projects that are less than 600 square feet, which gives its customers a single point of contact throughout each phase of the construction process.

Unlike contractors that only offer small-scale handyman services and have to use subcontractors for other types of construction, We Love Small Jobs utilizes its general contracting license and highly trained technicians to supplement its handyman work with small- and medium-sized home repair and building services. “We handle service calls for things like plumbing leaks and cabinet repairs, but we also have the capabilities to remodel homes and build room additions,” explains Mr. Tarik-El. “Our services are designed to improve our customers’ homes, and we customize those services to meet their specific needs.”

Another distinguishing attribute of We Love Small Jobs is its dedication to planning and coordination, which Mr. Tarik-El says is an important aspect of every project. “We put a lot of time into the estimating process and planning stages. In fact, before any job begins, we conduct thorough research to determine the best, most cost-effective materials to use. Planning ahead allows us to ensure every project runs smoothly and meets its deadlines.”

Industry Info

Make sure you do plenty of research before taking on a do-it-yourself home improvement project. With dozens of home improvement shows on TV and online instructional videos that show everything from how to fix a squeaky door to how to replace flooring, it’s no surprise that DIY has become a mantra for many homeowners throughout the Bay Area and beyond. But unless you’re fairly knowledgeable about this type of work, taking on a home repair or construction project yourself can set you up for expensive mistakes and unintended consequences.

“Some people attempt home repairs or improvements even though they don’t have the skills and abilities of a true craftsman,” says Moorice Tarik-El, owner of We Love Small Jobs Handyman Services-Remodelers & Builders in Oakland. “There are many fine points to construction work that can only be learned through experience. That’s usually what’s missing in DIY construction projects—the work just isn’t the same quality as you’d get from a professional.”

Mr. Tarik-El says the real danger comes when individuals with some DIY experience market themselves as professional contractors. “Inexperienced people aren’t able to offer the same quality and service as a licensed contractor or tradesman. It’s important to hire licensed contractors who have years of professional experience. Anyone can build a beautiful website or give you a few references, but you need to look at a company as a whole and make a decision based on its entire reputation.”
To determine if you should tackle a job yourself or leave it to a professional, consider the following information:

Do it yourself
Decorative projects such as indoor painting, moulding and replacing trim Changing drawer pulls and hardware Replacing existing light fixtures and ceiling fans Small tiling projects

Leave it to a contractor
Anything to do with gas lines or electricity Window replacements Insulation and weatherproofing Removing trees Roof installations or repairs Major home renovations such as additions and gutted remodels

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How quickly can you start my project?

A: We can schedule most jobs within a week or two, and we can usually get to emergency jobs in 24 to 48 hours. Once we understand the nature and urgency of your project, we can set a schedule that works best for you.

Q: How do you charge for your handyman and construction services?

A: For service calls, we have a minimum charge and hourly rate. For larger construction projects, we can give you a specific bid once we get onsite and see what needs to be done. We don’t provide estimates over the phone because we don’t know if we’ll need to open up walls or remove old materials to see what’s causing the problem.

Q: Do you clean up after every job?

A: Yes, and we take pride in our jobsite cleanliness. We keep brooms, mops, dusters and cleaning supplies with us, and there’s never an extra charge for cleanup.

Q: Can I provide my own fixtures or materials?

A: Yes, but we ask that you let us specify the products you buy so we can ensure the work will be done correctly. We only use high-quality materials, and we never mark them up—our customers pay what we pay.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Cheryl Tarik-El

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Cheryl Tarik-El: Love at First Site

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

OAKLAND — When Cheryl Tarik-El married a contractor, she had already fallen in love with the man, but she didn’t know she would also fall in love with his trade. “My husband, Moorice, started his business in 1985, which evolved over time into We Love Small Jobs Handyman Services-Remodelers & Builders,” she recounts. “After we got married, I left my job as a recruiter and became managing partner at the business. The construction industry was very different from the last field I’d worked in, but I loved it from the beginning. I like anything that has to do with the home and I’ve always dealt with people, so it just came naturally. Over time, I even started getting hands-on with the work, from painting to installing insulation and ripping out hardwood floors. So, I enjoy all aspects of it.”

As managing partner of We Love Small Jobs Handyman Services-Remodelers & Builders, Cheryl says her favorite part of her job is working with clients. “I like assisting customers and helping them solve their problems. Whether they have a plumbing issue or want to remodel their house, I enjoy guiding them through the process. I love seeing the transformation with some of the bigger jobs—it’s really fun and exciting for me.”

A resident of Oakland, Cheryl spends her time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “As a business owner, it can be hard to separate your livelihood from your personal life,” she says. “When I have time, I enjoy reading, going to the movies and traveling with my family. Moorice and I also enjoy rehabilitating the properties we own. And when I can get up early enough, I like going to the driving range with my son.” In addition to her career and her hobbies, Cheryl homeschools Moorice’s and her youngest child.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Cheryl espouses the importance of customer satisfaction. “The majority of our work comes from repeat clients, which speaks to our high rate of customer satisfaction. We’ll have a client whose kitchen we did 15 years ago, and they’ll call us back to update it or redo it all over again. Whether it’s a new customer or an old one, we always stand by our work and take the time to get the job done right.”

When asked the first thing she’d do if she were to retire tomorrow, Cheryl says she’d see the world. “I would do more international traveling. There are a couple of places I’d like to revisit, like Hawaii and Jamaica, and there are also some places I’ve never been to before, like Africa.”

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: I’m definitely a night owl.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Café Colucci in Oakland.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Read a good book or watch an old movie.

Q: What book has been really influential for you?
A: “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho.

Q: What was your favorite Halloween costume growing up?
A: One year I dressed as a Hershey’s chocolate bar. I made it myself with some cardboard and even had a foil hat.

  • 3 Tips for Engaging a Home Services Contractor

OAKLAND — When engaging a contractor for a home project, your initial outreach can have a big influence on the outcome. The following tips can increase your likelihood of getting a response, as well as your chances of working with a quality contractor.

    1. Leave a detailed message

When reaching out to a contractor for an estimate, whether you’re communicating via phone or email, be sure to leave a detailed message. This will improve your chances of receiving a return call or email. Include the following information:

    • Your name and phone number
    • The location of your property, along with the type of property (house, condo, etc.)
    • A concise description of the service or project you need assistance with
    • Pictures of the work site (if emailing)

Contractors receive a lot of requests for estimates, so it’s only natural that detailed messages are more likely to receive a response. It saves the contractor a lot of time to get those details up front and allows them to respond more efficiently. For example, they can tell you directly if they service your area or provide the service you’re looking for.

    1. Research cost beforehand

Prior to contacting a contractor for an estimate, take some time to research the costs associated with your project. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to watch HGTV and decide they want to remodel their bathroom or kitchen without having any idea of the actual costs involved. This often results in “sticker shock” when the contractor gives them a ballpark estimate. Additionally, costs can fluctuate significantly depending on the specifics of the job. So, whether you choose to go online or visit your local home improvement store, do some research ahead of time to determine if you’re ready to pursue the project.

    1. Don’t expect freebies

When speaking with a contractor, a lot of homeowners make the mistake of leading with the question, “Do you provide free estimates?” This is far from the first question you should ask. To a licensed professional, it signals that you’re only price shopping and probably don’t have the budget to pay for the work.

Here’s another way to look at it: Would you ask an attorney or a doctor for a free consultation?  No, because you know they’re a licensed professional and you’re paying for their expertise. It’s the same with a licensed contractor or handyman. If they happen to offer free estimates, they’ll let you know—otherwise, assume there will be a fee for their time.
