They did a good job. We have worked with them several times. They did the roofing on our home previous to our purchase of it and that was maybe 10 or more years ago, so when we needed a couple of repairs, we called them. They were very good and about two years ago, there was a tremendous wind storm and it blew all of our solar panels off of part of the roof. We didn't know what we needed and between them and the solar company, they determined that the roof was so damaged that it needed to be completely redone, so we had Wedge redo the damaged roof and it turned out very well.

Good workmanship and honesty from their estimator

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for roofing contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Wedge Roofing, the key to keeping clients happy is providing them with the highest level of safety, performance, quality and professionalism. “From the initial contact with our front office to the final cleanup, we’re committed to making sure our clients have top-quality experiences,” says President Ralph Wedge.

Wedge Roofing’s unyielding emphasis on professionalism drives the company to perfecting its trade. After years of education and practice, Wedge Roofing’s staff is now called upon to instruct and teach the next generation of roofing professionals. Wedge Roofing is one of the few contractors recognized by the California Apprenticeship Council with approval to train. Training of apprentices consists of a curriculum of book study as well as on-the-job instruction.

In the application of steep roofing systems, Wedge Roofing holds top honors such as GAF Master Elite Shingle Roofing Contractor and CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster™ Contractor. The company specializes in stone, slate, tile, metal and Fire Class A wood shake roofing. In addition to working on all traditional low-slope roofing systems, Wedge Roofing has earned the prestigious National Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA PCP) Contractor Company Accreditation, which shows a dedication to the most advanced techniques in the installation of spray foam and is awarded after rigorous training and testing. This accreditation is held by only 12 contractors throughout the United States. Wedge Roofing is the only SPFA PCP Accredited Contractor in the State of California.

Unlike less experienced roofing companies that offer a limited range of products, Wedge Roofing presents its clients with a full spectrum of options. “We can provide virtually any type of roofing system or material upon request,” affirms Mr. Wedge.

Yet another attribute that distinguishes Wedge Roofing from its competitors is its formidable breadth of experience and credentials. “We’ve been serving the Bay Area for more than 41 years, during which time we’ve earned a reputation for outstanding quality and dependability,” says Mr. Wedge. “Roofing is assembled onsite from thousands of components by the mechanics that the contractor sends out. Our clients can be assured that our crews are properly supervised and trained to use the best equipment and most advanced tools.”

Industry Info

When it comes to roofing technology, the future is foam.

Advancements in roofing technology have yielded an array of cutting-edge products and systems, but one innovation stands out as particularly unique: spray polyurethane foam roofing. “Unlike shingles or tiles, a polyurethane foam roof is sprayed on, after which it quickly expands into a seamless, monolithic membrane,” explains Gary Harvey, general manager of Wedge Roofing in Petaluma. “By acting as both a thermal and moisture barrier, a spray foam roof provides superior insulation and waterproofing.”

Mr. Harvey explains what makes polyurethane foam such an effective insulator. “Polyurethane foam is the same material that insulates your refrigerator and freezer. Consider the fact that a mere half inch of this product makes your freezer’s interior temperature unnoticeable from the outside; now, imagine doubling that insulating value and applying it to your roof. Unlike traditional roof insulation, which merely reduces heat transfer, a polyurethane foam roof’s superior insulating ability allows it to completely block up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature transfer.”

Superior insulation isn’t the only advantage spray polyurethane foam roofs provide. Since they can be installed directly over most existing roof membranes, they represent a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative to complete roof removal and replacement. The foam goes on seamlessly and bonds to whatever substrate is beneath it, with no shingles or fasteners required, which cuts down on material costs.

Despite their foam composition, spray polyurethane foam roofs are incredibly durable, often outlasting ostensibly sturdier roofing materials. “Spray foam roofs are able to withstand normal building movement without compromising the membrane’s integrity, and they also add to a structure’s shearing and racking strength,” explains Mr. Harvey. “That’s why you can find 50-year-old spray foam roofs throughout the Bay Area that are still intact and under warranty. A spray foam roof’s only real vulnerability is ultraviolet light, but this is easily addressed by applying a commercial-grade silicone coating. As long as you reapply its coating as needed, your spray polyurethane roof should be the last roof you ever install.”

Ralph Wedge: Roofing Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

PETALUMA — In the wake of an economic recession, Ralph Wedge found an opportunity to start his own business. “Early in my career, I worked for a roofing company doing carpentry work like dry rot repair and upper roof reconstruction,” he recounts. “When the recession of 1974-75 hit, that company went bankrupt and closed its doors, as did several other roofing companies in the area. I saw this as an opportunity to get into the business, so I applied for and received my roofing contractor’s license. That marked the beginning of Wedge Roofing in 1976. I started out small with just a few employees, and have had the pleasure of expanding over time to a staff of nearly 50.”

Today, Ralph says his favorite part of his job is watching projects progress from start to finish. “There are a lot of aspects involved in a roofing project, from the initial consultation to the final installation. I enjoy watching and participating with our staff as they guide each client through this process and leave them happy and satisfied at the end of it.”

A resident of Novato (where he lives with his wife, Jennifer), Ralph spends his free time on a variety of active pastimes. “I’m a competitive sailboat racer, so I spend a lot of my time on the Bay,” he details. “I also play racquetball regularly and enjoy skiing in the winter.” In addition to these personal hobbies, Ralph likes spending time with his family. “I have three boys—they’re all in their 30s now and pursuing their respective careers, but we still do family vacations together. We’ve been to Europe a couple of times, and we’ve also sailed around Tahiti and the British Virgin Islands.”

In regard to his professional career, Ralph believes a company is only as good as the people that comprise it. “Early on, I realized the ability to succeed in this business is all about the people who work for you,” he affirms. “If you enable your employees to thrive, your business will thrive as a result. That’s why I maintain very open relationships with my employees and invest in the best training programs available. Most of our employees have tenures of 10 to 20 years, which I think says a lot about the work environment we’ve created.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first job?
A: I was a paperboy.

Q: Have you ever read a book more than once?
A: “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Southern France. I’ve been to Paris, where I enjoyed viewing the beautiful architecture and visiting art and history museums, but I’d still like to see the Mediterranean region.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Rainy days are when roofs start leaking, so I derive great satisfaction by participating in the emergency repair side of Wedge Roofing.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Potato chips.

  • Understanding Your Roofing System Warranty

PETALUMA — A good way to make the most of a new roof is to install it as a “roofing system.” With a roofing system, all components are installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s set guidelines. The main benefit of installing in this manner (besides a quality job) is the roof is eligible for a better warranty. However, to ensure your warranty stays valid, you’ll need to have a clear understanding of how it functions.

A roofing system warranty is a lot like an automobile warranty. Many vehicles come with a 7-year/100,000-mile warranty. However, owners need to understand this warranty requires ongoing maintenance to be performed at specific points during the warranty period. There’s also an expectation that minor repairs may be needed along the way. If an owner neglects to keep up with manufacturer-recommended maintenance or proactively address repair needs, their warranty may not be honored in the event of a breakdown.

A roofing system warranty is very similar in these respects. All major manufacturers require annual roof inspections and maintenance in their warranty terms. Additionally, there’s an expectation that some minor repairs may be needed along the way. The good news is, like your vehicle, your roof should perform well beyond its warranty period if you observe these manufacturer recommendations and requirements.

    Complete Video Transcription

PETALUMA — Host, Sarah Rutan: When installing a new roofing system, make sure you’re aware of its warranty terms. To learn more, we’re in Petaluma with Gary Harvey of Wedge Roofing, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ralph Wedge.

Gary Harvey: Understanding your roofing system warranty is much like understanding your automobile warranty. Your automobile may be accompanied by a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty, however, it does require maintenance and tune-ups and the expectation that there will be some minor repairs necessary over the course of that seven-year, 100,000-mile period.

A roof is very similar in those respects. All of the major manufacturers of roofing systems require inspections and annual maintenance and also have the expectation that some minor repairs will be needed along the way. Much like your automobile, the roofing system should perform well beyond the warranty period and should provide you years of protection.
