I have recommended them to other people. They had someone call me to see how I liked the job. My wife even referred them to her boss. They did a fantastic job. They're good guys.

I think that Lee, the owner, was here a lot and delivered all of the lumber, fixed the dry-rot, and was a part of the project. Lee was there every day to make sure everything was going well. Everything I asked for that wasn't on the estimate, he took care of it without any second thought, no problem. I would refer them to anyone. They are a very good company. They definitely belong in the Diamond Certified book. They did everything I asked.

Lee, the owner, was very conscientious. His employees were diligent about their work.

They did what they said they were going to do. They cleaned up. They didn't leave anything lying around. It was a very big project that they did for us. They told us ahead of time that they thought it would take two weeks, and it did take two weeks. They painted the whole exterior of our house and it's very large.

They were very efficient and timely. They cleaned up perfectly. After almost a year, the paint still looks brand new. We had an exterior paint job on a building we have.

Everything came out right. It's not about the price, but making sure that the job got done right. It was one of those jobs that just went so smoothly.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Wine Country Painters, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: stay attuned to the needs of its clients and customize its services accordingly. “Our ability to satisfy our customers depends on our ability to understand what they’re looking for,” explains owner Lee Dido. “That’s why we prioritize listening closely to our clients, determining their needs and collaborating with them to achieve their goals.”

Wine Country Painters has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma, Marin, and San Francisco Counties since 2002. The company takes on painting projects of all types and sizes, but its primary focus is repainting custom homes and buildings and providing painting/finishing services for new construction projects. “Our clean-cut approach to interior painting includes performing all necessary prep work and keeping cut-in lines tight at ceilings, walls, and alongside door casing trim,” adds Mr. Dido.

Unlike painting companies that hire inexperienced employees who lack affability, Wine Country Painters maintains a staff of industry professionals who are as well-versed in customer service as they are in the intricacies of the job. “Our painters are very friendly and personable, so much so that we’ve had customers tell us they miss them being around after their projects are over,” says Mr. Dido. “All our employees have been with us for at least five years, and they’re fully trained and aware of my high expectations for quality work and customer service.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Wine Country Painters is its broad range of capabilities, which allows it to take on work that other painting contractors aren’t qualified to handle. “I have a home improvement certification from the CSLB, which means we’re able to handle any repairs that need to be done prior to painting,” says Mr. Dido. “By providing services such as dry rot repairs, sheetrock installations and minor roof repairs, we’re able to simplify the entire process for our clients.”

Industry Info

When painting the exterior of your home, proper prep work is essential for preventing water intrusion issues.
While quality materials and correct technique are crucial for ensuring a quality paint job, these steps can be futile if not preceded by thorough prep work. “Prep is a vital part of the painting process,” says Lee Dido, owner of Wine Country Painters in Santa Rosa. “By taking proactive steps like caulking and priming, a painter can prevent serious problems like dry rot from ever occurring.”

One of the preliminary steps of prep work is to fill in exterior cracks, joints and gaps to seal them from water intrusion. “Water can enter a home’s exterior not only through cracks in the wood, but also through joints in siding and trim, which is why it’s really important to apply caulking in all these areas,” says Mr. Dido. “It’s also required by California building code, as well as by most paint manufacturers in order to maintain warranties.” However, Mr. Dido says not just any caulking will do. “The best caulking is urethane-based—it’s rated for 60 years and typically lasts 20 to 30 years, whereas caulking that’s rated for 30 or 40 years usually only lasts about four or five.”

Following the application of caulking, the next important prep step is applying primer. In addition to providing a good surface for the top paint coat to adhere to, primer helps further seal the home’s exterior from water intrusion. According to Mr. Dido, a good priming job should include often-neglected steps such as back-priming. “I make sure every inch of every piece of siding or trim is primed before it’s installed, including the backside,” he says. “A lot of times, irrigation blows up on the wall and runs down on the bottom engrains, which is where dry rot occurs. Making sure everything is thoroughly primed front and back can double the lifespan of a home’s exterior siding.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do you do thorough prep work?
A: “Absolutely. We believe prep work such as caulking and priming is a crucial component of a high-quality paint job.”

Q: Can you help me with color selection?
A: “Yes. Color choice is a personal preference, but once we find out what your vision is for the project, we can steer you in the right direction.”

Q: How far in advance do you schedule jobs?
A: “We typically book our projects two weeks in advance.”

Q: How long will it take you to provide an estimate?
A: “We typically supply the estimate within one or two days of the initial walkthrough.”

Q: Can you match the stain of my new cabinet doors with my existing cabinets?
A: “Yes. In most cases, we can match the color by applying the stain to a test board, seeing how the wood takes it and determining whether it needs to be darkened or lightened. For more difficult cases, we can take the board to the local Benjamin Moore store and have it matched there.”

Lee Dido: Painting the Wine Country

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

FORESTVILLE — Lee Dido started painting professionally right out of high school and hasn’t looked back since. “After graduating high school, I was offered a job painting houses at $7 an hour, and I took it,” he recounts. “Working for a general contractor, I did other aspects of construction as well, but painting was what I enjoyed most and really excelled at, so I decided to focus on it. By the time I was 28, I’d started my own company.”

Today, as owner of Wine Country Painters, Lee says his favorite part of his job is working with customers. “I love meeting new people and guiding them through the painting process. I understand how frustrating it can be to have someone working in and around your home, so I do my best to ease that stress and educate my customers on what we’re doing.”

A longtime resident of Sonoma County, Lee expresses his fondness for the flavor of Bay Area life. “From the weather to the food and culture, I love the lifestyle we have in the North Bay. I’ve been to a lot of places and nothing is quite like it.”

Outside of work, Lee likes to stay active with exercise and outdoor activities. “I go to the gym five days a week, and I’m an avid swimmer and cyclist. I also do a lot of skiing in the winter and enjoy taking walks along the beach.” Additionally, Lee likes spending time with his wife, Alexandra, their two grown children, Britney and River, and their one-year old daughter, Meadow. “After being in an empty nest for a while, Alexandra and I recently had another daughter. It’s been an amazing experience to have a second go-round at parenthood.”

In regard to his professional career, Lee espouses the virtues of proactive communication. “I pride myself on having good communication with customers,” he affirms. “Whether I’m following up with them after the job or calling ahead to let them know I’m running behind, they really appreciate being kept in the loop. A lot of painters struggle with this, so I make a concerted effort to keep those communication lines open.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Lee says he’d continue doing the things he currently enjoys. “I’d probably spend more time playing with my daughter, going to the gym and skiing. I might also take the opportunity to go to Europe and ski the Alps.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The San Francisco Giants.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Goat cheese and crackers.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Vinyl records. I used to be a DJ when I was in my 20s, so I’ve accumulated quite a collection. I probably have 10,000 records at this point.

Q: If you could immediately master any musical instrument, what would you choose?
A: Alto saxophone.

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: Soft-boiled.

  • How to Get Clean Lines with Interior Painting

FORESTVILLE — When painting your home’s interior, knowing the right techniques can go a long way toward achieving a beautiful result. One such technique is using caulking to get clean lines when painting with different colors on adjacent walls and ceilings. Applying a bead of caulking to the seam where two sections meet (for example, where the ceiling meets the wall) will provide a smooth surface for cutting in with your paint, resulting in a nice, straight line.

Here are a few tips for caulking application:

    • Always wipe the tip of your caulking gun prior to use.
    • As you apply caulking, press the gun’s tip against the seam and apply consistent pressure to the trigger. This will help you achieve an even bead.
    • Following application, go over the bead with a rag and use your finger to press it into the seam. This will give you a nice, smooth edge.
    • Give the caulking a few minutes to dry prior to cutting in with your paint.

  • Video: How to Paint Your Home’s Interior

    Complete Video Transcription

FORESTVILLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to an interior painting project, following a few essential guidelines can help you achieve a positive result. Today we’re in Forestville with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Lee Dido of Wine Country Painters to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Lee Dido: Hello. Today I’d like to feature interior painting and a professional tip for having your interior paint project performed smoothly, efficiently from start to finish with beautiful results. One of the aspects of achieving a high quality paint job when painting interiors with multiple colors on ceiling and wall is to apply a bead of caulking wherever the ceiling meets the wall. This will provide a smooth surface for cutting in or brushing your wall color with a very crisp, straight line even on an uneven surface.

So, you’ll always want to wipe the tip of your caulking gun prior to applicating the bead of caulking just like this, and you’ll want to press it right into the corner here of the ceiling and the wall just like this and as you gently go across the wall you’ll want to pull the trigger enough to apply an even bead of caulking into that corner and crack just like this. Once that is complete, you’ll take your rag and finger and wipe it smooth into that crevice to fill it to achieve a nice smooth edge as shown here. Perfect. Now, that’ll provide an even surface for cutting in your accent color once that’s dried.

Once your bead of caulking has dried correctly into the corner of the crack, you’ll want to take a brush just like this, and as we apply paint to this corner you’ll want to slowly and gently work it into that corner just like that. That’s how you properly paint an accent wall on an uneven or heavy textured surface.
