Comparative Summary

Before moving to Marin County and founding World Tree Service, Inc. in 1997, James Cairnes attained a National Diploma in Arboriculture at England’s Merrist Wood College and practiced tree care in five countries around the world. “My training is pretty unique in the industry,” says Mr. Cairnes. “My worldwide experience in different aspects of arboriculture work–including climbing and hands-on work–is particularly valuable to our clients. I’m not just a salesman.”

World Tree Service, Inc. provides a variety of arboriculture services to Bay Area clients, from planting new trees to extending the life of mature trees through techniques like reducing canopy weight. “We provide a full range of tree services,” says Mr. Cairnes, “including planting, fertilization, pruning young and mature trees, tree removal–sometimes with cranes and in difficult access situations–and diagnosis and treatment for a variety of arboreal diseases.”

World Tree Service’s field team has years of practical experience. “I’ve worked with my two key guys for 12 years,” says Mr. Cairnes, “and they’ve been with my company for six and four years, respectively. I trust their experience, quality and conscientiousness.” Mr. Cairnes stresses general care of clients’ property and detailed clean-up.

“We also strive to maintain a healthy habitat for the various animal species that live in the trees we service,” says Mr. Cairnes. “I volunteer for a local wild animal rescue organization, helping restore baby owls and other birds to their nests, and I take that volunteer spirit with me to each job. We’ll recommend pruning in certain seasons to help maintain animal habitats, and I’m happy to help clients build things like barn owl boxes to encourage healthy ecosystems on their properties.”

Industry Info

When hiring a tree care service, make sure it’s led by a certified arborist. Legally, one doesn’t need certification to care for or remove trees, but employing a non-certified person can be a risky proposition. “There are considerable safety issues involved with tree work,” says James Cairnes, owner of Small World Tree Company. “Both people and property are at risk if something goes wrong.”

A tree worker aloft needs to know what they’re doing to safely perform their job, and removing a tree usually isn’t as simple as cutting it down. “There’s definitely a methodology to it,” says Mr. Cairnes. “A tree care provider needs to do a risk assessment beforehand to see if there are any utility lines among the roots or if there’s a risk to a building if a tree comes down the wrong way.” Someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing can trigger a significant amount of damage or cause serious injuries.

A certified arborist can also help advise how to maintain healthy trees on your property. “A lot of people overwater mature oak trees,” says Mr. Cairnes. “Oaks go into decline if they get too much water in summer months. The best thing for them is to apply wood chips or mulch to the base, which keep out other plants and weeds and retain soil moisture. Also, have your property’s irrigation systems checked to ensure they’re working properly and not leaking too much water.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you spray trees? Are your methods safe for animals?

A: We don’t spray trees; we fertilize through deep root feeding. Our processes and materials are safe for people, pets and wildlife.

Q: When is the best time to fertilize trees?

A: For most species, the best time is in the fall. Once a year is usually enough. Overfertilization can be as big a problem as not enough fertilization.

Q: Mr. Cairnes has great credentials, but what about the person who will actually care for my trees?

A: Unlike a lot of tree care companies, our principal, Mr. Cairnes, leads every team in the field. He’ll be the one caring for your trees.

Q: My redwood trees are turning yellow and look like they’re dying. Are they?

A: Probably not; they’re just changing their needles. The old needles turn yellow, drop off, and are replaced by new, green ones.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM James Cairnes

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

James Cairnes: Climbing to the Top

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN ANSELMO — For James Cairnes, an adolescent injury became an unlikely catalyst for a lifelong career in an unfamiliar field. “I was in a motorcycle accident when I was 17 and ended up in the hospital,” he remembers. “The guy in the bed next to me was an arborist. I had no idea what an arborist was, so he told me all about it. I found it fascinating, and when I started college the following year, I enrolled in a three-year arboriculture program. It was sort of by chance, but it ended up significantly altering the course of my life.”

Today, as owner of World Tree Service, Inc., James says his favorite part of his job is going out on a limb for his customers. “I still like climbing, which is something I’ve enjoyed since I started. I also like looking after the long-term health of my customers’ trees and making sure they can exist in harmony with the surrounding wildlife and environment.”

James took a circuitous route to get to his current residence in Marin County—he lived in Norway, Ireland and England before he reached adulthood, and when he was 25 years old, he took a trip to the United States that eventually turned into a permanent residence. “After living in New York for seven years, I was ready to head back to England, but first I went on a cross-country motorcycle trip to California,” he explains. “Soon after I arrived, I met a woman named Natalie Carey, with whom I would later co-found World Tree Service.”

Outside of work, James spends his time engaged in a variety of active outdoor pastimes. “My main sport is motorcycle trials, which basically consists of riding through obstacle courses of logs and rocks without putting your feet down,” he says. “I also like mountain and road biking, as well as surfing.” In keeping with his love of tree climbing, James also volunteers as a climber for WildCare, a wildlife rehabilitation center in San Rafael. “We rescue baby birds that have fallen out of their nests, climb up the tree and reunite them with their parents. I actually met my girlfriend doing this, since she works for WildCare.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, James says he’d set out for his longest ride yet. “I would ride my motorcycle to South America. I’ve done a few trips to Central America, so I’ve sort of been building up to this bigger excursion. While I’m down there, I’d like to do some rainforest tree-climbing work, like setting up tree platforms for documentary film crews.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Who’s the best James Bond?
A: Sean Connery.

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?

  • Does My Tree Have Sudden Oak Death?

SAN ANSELMO — Sudden oak death has been a major problem in California for years, and it continues to concern property owners statewide. In some cases, however, what people perceive to be symptoms of this disease actually denote a much less alarming condition.

One of the most obvious signs of sudden oak death is a black staining of the lower part of the tree trunk—a thick, sticky substance with a sweet odor, similar to wine. What few people realize is there’s another tree condition that exhibits similar symptoms: bacterial wetwood (also known as slime flux). Bacterial wetwood is basically a fermented, slimy bacterial liquid that oozes from a crack or wound on a tree’s exterior and leaves vertical streaks as it runs down the side of the trunk. Luckily, this occurrence doesn’t have much of an effect on the tree; it doesn’t need to be treated, and it’ll eventually go away on its own.

People sometimes mistake slime flux for sudden oak death, but if you look closely, there are several differences between the symptoms. First, sudden oak death usually occurs on the lower trunk, whereas slime flux can occur much higher up. Also, unlike the thick, sweet-smelling character of sudden oak death, slime flux is a thinner liquid and has a rancid odor. So, before jumping to the conclusion that your tree has sudden oak death, take a closer look at the symptoms.

Expert video tip
  • Video: Does My Tree Have Sudden Oak Death?

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN ANSELMO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’ve identified signs of Sudden Oak Death on your oak tree, it’s possible that you’ve confused these symptoms with those of a much less alarming condition. Today we’re in San Anselmo with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor James Cairnes of World Tree Service to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, James Cairnes: Something that I’m frequently asked is: Does my beautiful oak tree have sudden oak death? So, I’d like to just put your mind at rest, hopefully, that there is another similar disease, which is very common, and is not a problem for the oak trees. So, the sudden oak death at first, as we probably all know, is seen by this black staining on the lower trunk of the tree. And it’s very sticky and very thick and it smells. It smells like wine. It kind of smells like a – it’s kind of a nice smell. And this is a – this is bad. This is the sudden oak death.

So, this is what we do not want. But the other one thing that we’re trying to tell the difference from is a thinner liquid that comes from higher up in the tree, usually, that’s called a slime flux or bacterial wetwood. And it’s a liquid, a very thin liquid, and it’s very rancid smelling. So, thin and rancid, as opposed to thick and smelling like wine. So, the rancid smelling, you know, is actually the thing which is not so bad. So, that actually doesn’t affect the tree. It’s a bacterial wetwood. It’s caused by fermentation, bacteria from a wound that can be seeping sap and it’s – so, it’s not actually that bad. It’s not a bad thing. You do not need to treat this, and it will eventually go away.
