Yeaman Auto Body Inc. provides a complete range of collision repair services for all types of foreign and domestic vehicles at its Palo Alto facility. The company has the training and equipment to handle everything from frame and unibody repairs to glass replacement and body painting, and it backs all its work with a transferrable lifetime warranty.

President Scott Yeaman says much of Yeaman Auto Body’s success can be attributed to its emphasis on customer education. “A lot of people don’t fully understand what goes into fixing a car after an accident, so we try to make things simple for our customers. By educating them about the process, explaining their options and giving them our honest opinions, we can ensure they have great experiences.”

Yeaman Auto Body is known for its ability to navigate the insurance process for its customers, which Mr. Yeaman says isn’t always a given in the auto body industry. “Our customers need someone to represent them when it comes to dealing with their insurance companies, and that’s something we take very seriously. We want them to know we’re on their side every step of the way.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto body repair shops that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Yeaman Auto Body Inc., the keys to keeping customers happy are simple: always put their needs first and focus on providing them with excellent service. “We work for our customers, even if their insurance companies are paying the bills,” says President Scott Yeaman. “From keeping them informed to helping them get rental cars, we do whatever we can to take care of them.”

Yeaman Auto Body has been providing collision repair services for all types of foreign and domestic vehicles at its East Palo Alto facility since 1980. The company utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to handle everything from frame and unibody repairs to body painting and glass replacement.

Unlike auto body shops that work quickly and inexpensively at the direction of insurance companies, Yeaman Auto Body takes a meticulous approach that ensures all its work meets the highest standards of quality. “Some insurance companies tell shops to use aftermarket parts or do other things to discount the jobs, but that’s not always best for the customers,” explains Mr. Yeaman. “We’re on the customer’s side, so we make sure they understand how their insurance company is approaching their claim and act as the go-between to ensure the process is as smooth as possible.”

Another distinguishing feature of Yeaman Auto Body is the lifetime warranty it offers on every repair job, which is transferrable if the customer decides to sell the vehicle. “Any work we do is guaranteed for life,” affirms Mr. Yeaman. “If a customer’s car has been in an accident, they don’t have to worry about it being devalued—our repairs will still be guaranteed in the future. We can afford to do this because we invest in quality equipment, training and materials. We truly care about the quality of our work, and that allows us to offer a warranty that most shops can’t match.”

Industry Info

Your insurance coverage makes all the difference when you need auto body repairs.

Many auto body repair companies are Direct Repair Program (DRP) shops, which means insurance companies recommend them to their clients. However, even though DRP shops meet insurance company standards for repairs, they often work to benefit the insurance companies rather than the vehicle owners. Unfortunately, this often leads to lower quality repairs and devalued vehicles.

Scott Yeaman, owner of Yeaman Auto Body Inc. in East Palo Alto, has seen this before, and he has some recommendations for protecting yourself. “People need to know that most insurance companies only want to pay for aftermarket parts, but that means you’re not getting the value you deserve,” he says. “A high-quality car should get replacement parts made by the original manufacturer in order to preserve its value and appearance.”

Mr. Yeaman adds that vehicle owners’ insurance policies are often clear about replacement parts, so there’s little they can do after they’ve been in an accident if their policies don’t specify quality parts. “The best way to protect yourself is to be aware of your insurance policy,” he says. “That way, you’ll be protected and get the right replacement parts and services.”

Mr. Yeaman recommends working with an insurance agent who will work toward your best interests rather than buying inexpensive insurance from a website that doesn’t give you personalized representation. “Your agent should decipher what each plan will provide and suggest different plans or products that will give you what you want,” he says. “You need to be educated about what you’re paying for and what you’re getting.”

Mr. Yeaman also suggests finding an auto body repair shop that advocates on behalf of its customers instead of blindly following insurance companies’ wishes. “The shop should use factory parts and push your insurance to pay for them,” he says. “You should also find a shop that offers a good warranty and has the equipment to return your car to its pre-accident condition.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How quickly can you get my car in and out of your shop?
A: It depends on your insurance claim. Some insurance companies take days to even send an adjuster to look at the vehicle. We’ll discuss your options based on your situation and let you know an estimated timeline for how long it will take to complete your repairs.

Q: Will my car look the same as it did before the accident?
A: If we’re able to use factory parts (which we’ll push your insurance company to pay for), your car will look the way it did before the accident. The unibody industry has made it so we can bring cars back to factory specifications by pulling off panels and replacing them with brand-new panels.

Q: Will you be able to match my car’s paint?
A: With the paint and processes we use, paint isn’t matched new edge to old edge. We blend the new paint into the adjacent panel and clear coat all of it. All colors have slight differences, but with the way we blend the color and clear coat over it, you won’t be able to see the blend or tell the difference between the panels.

Q: Do you have to take apart my car to repaint it?
A: Yes. If we just tape off the area that isn’t being painted, that’s the first place you’ll see paint peeling. Once we remove the glass and moldings, we can paint the panel and then put it all back together.

Q: Can I arrange for rental cars or towing through your shop?
A: Yes, we can arrange for both. We can also offer you a short ride or drive you to the train station. Either way, we’ll help you get where you need to go.

Q: Will my insurance company pay for the repairs?
A: Depending on your policy, you may have a hard time getting your insurance company to pay for the best possible repairs. For example, they may not want to pay for factory parts. Sometimes we have to argue with adjusters to get our customers better parts, but we’re happy to do it.

Scott Yeaman: An Educator at Heart

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

PALO ALTO — Soon after he started doing auto body work to supplement his day job, Scott Yeaman realized he could make a better living if he made it his main career. “I used to be a math and science teacher in Palo Alto and Los Gatos,” he recounts. “I’ve always enjoyed working on and driving cars—I restored my ’55 Chevy and raced Porsches. My uncle had an auto body shop in Oakland and offered to give me some work to help me make ends meet. After training with him, I started doing auto body jobs on the weekends and during winter and summer breaks. Pretty soon, I realized I was making more money on the side than I was from my day job. When a shop location in Palo Alto became available in 1980, I decided to quit teaching and opened Yeaman Auto Body.”

Although decades have passed since he last taught in a classroom, Scott is still an educator at heart. “I’m very passionate about educating my customers, especially about insurance,” he says. “I explain how the insurance companies operate, what kind of coverage they should have on their policies and other helpful information.”

A resident of Sunnyvale (where he lives with his wife, Doris), Scott spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “When I was younger, I used to be into extreme sports like racing and whitewater rafting, but I’ve backed off a bit in my later years,” he explains. “However, I still like snow skiing and riding dirt bikes. Doris and I also enjoy live music and often go out dancing on the weekends. Plus, we have seven grandkids between us, so they’re a big part of our lives as well.”

In regard to his professional career, Scott shares his simple formula for success. “My first priority is making my customers happy, because that’s how a business grows,” he says. “If I make a customer happy, they tell their friends and family, and so on down the line. Naturally, a big part of it is performing quality work. We’re so confident in the quality of our workmanship that we offer a lifetime transferable warranty, which no other shop I know of offers. That makes customers feel even more confident about their choice to bring their cars here.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Scott says he’d move to Italy. “Doris and I bought a house in Italy last year, near Tuscany. It’s practically brand-new—it’d been built just three years before we bought it. So, we’re looking forward to spending a lot of time there in our retirement years.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Cook’s Seafood in Menlo Park.

Q: What was your first car?

A: A ’55 Chevy. It didn’t have a transmission when I bought it, so I had to rebuild that before I could drive it.

Q: What’s your dream car?

A: I’ve always been into Porsches and I own a 914/6 that I restored myself. However, I’d love to own a Cayman or 911 because those are basically full-on race cars.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Probably to some of the European countries I haven’t visited yet. I’ve been to Germany, Italy, France and Spain, but I still want to see Portugal and the Scandinavian region.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for dessert?

A: Chocolate mousse.

  • 2 Beneficial Additions to Your Auto Insurance Policy

PALO ALTO — When buying auto insurance, it’s important to know what you’re getting. Many people have a limited understanding of what’s included in their policies, and as a result, they may miss out on some beneficial perks. Here are a couple of things you should make sure your auto insurance policy includes:

    OEM parts

In order to minimize costs, insurance companies typically direct auto body shops to use cheaper aftermarket parts when performing repairs. Unfortunately, these parts are usually of inferior quality and in some cases don’t fit correctly, which can complicate and prolong the repair process. To avoid this scenario, make sure your insurance policy specifies the use of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. Since they’re made by the same manufacturer that made your car, OEM parts provide the best possible quality, fit and finish.

    Rental car coverage

While it may seem like an unnecessary addition, rental car coverage can save you a lot of money in the event of an accident. The completion time for body repair work can be surprisingly lengthy, especially if you aren’t using a shop that’s in your insurance company’s direct network. If you don’t have another car, you’re going to need a rental, which can be expensive if it’s not covered by your policy. Plus, rental car coverage isn’t very expensive in the first place, so even if you don’t end up using it, the additional cost will be negligible.

  • Video: Buying an Auto Insurance Policy

    Complete Video Transcription

PALO ALTO — Scott Yeaman: An important thing we tell our customers is be careful, when you’re buying insurance, which company you’re using to make sure you’re getting a credible company and get people who are your agents who can help decipher what your policy is going to be. You want to make sure that you have a chance to buy OEM package—on your original equipment, it’s called—on your car. That way you get factory parts that go on your car. There are a lot of offshore parts that don’t exactly fit your car well.

And the next thing is, basically, you want to make sure that you watch your rental coverage because the rental coverage these days is going up higher and higher. And it sometimes takes two and three weeks, while we’re going back and forth with parts and talking to the insurance company to get the car right, and it might run very high. So, one accident may save you all kinds of money if you get a rental coverage on your insurance.
